Was Derek McGrath cool, whatever being cool means?

He had drinks with the lads and all that

I don't think I was unfair. By all means young lads are entitled to travel the world and enjoy themselves. But why don't they do it while playing for Waterford. No they'll wait until Waterford are finished and then leave the club that looked after them high and dry and their teammates who have trained all year without them to play their biggest matches of the year without their star players. Tom Devine should be the example. He announced he was taking time out to travel and did so when suited him and not until inter county was over.
What about the club players who also have to play the same number of games in a short period after being idle for so long. The idea of putting aside April to play club games is not ideal but at least club players know when they will play. My response was to the original post who claimed playing club games in April was in some way responsible for Waterford's poor championship.

It's a dysfunctional relationship between club and county playerwise at this stage. Team mates who for what could be up to the first 9 months of the year they might train with them 5 times depending on league and championship successes.

I think the whole thing needs radical new thinking because it's a structural issue that is challenging the club game, not a few lads spending a summer in the States. In terms of players going, they are not bound to the club and in fact any player has the option. Club players actually have that option every summer whereas any hurler serious about his inter county career knows it's limited.

And when a player goes, another lads gets an opportunity to play. One of the fellas you mention is soldiering all year, only to be dropped for the inter county players when they come back.

I don't think anyone has to state their intentions at the start of the year. You're not contractually obliged to play for your club in the summer months, it's voluntary and those in charge of club teams would do well to remember that. Most in charge of a serious senior team aren't doing it out of the goodness of their heart either.

I wouldn't contest the point about not playing any club games in April as daft, though I do think the squeeze on inter county players now is too much. Personally, I think they need to have a serious rethink about the league structure first of all and go from there.

Hope they players give it there all for the new manager.

Would be a disaster if some of the players opt out of the panel cause of the setup.

All speculation tbh and all sources seem the same

I'd be happy with his appointment and hope he has the squad playing as well as his double AI Club winning side Cuala. It's going to take time and it may not be til 2020 when we adapt to his style. He still has to take the job though and he might not be interested

It's going to be different, he might not be as edgy and cool as Derek McGrath

You constantly ask for updates on the managerial situation. A link to an article about a potential candidate from a national newspaper is offered and you dismiss it as speculation.

As for your edgy and cool comments... seriously? Are Brian Cody, Micheal O’Donoghue, Michael Ryan, John Kiely edgy and cool?
People need to seriously get over Derek. He gave it his all, nearly got us over the line but it didn’t happen. History will remember his stint as one League title. All the fancy words and countless interviews can’t hide that. Let’s move on from him and see where it takes us over the next few years.

There wont be a blade of grass left on either of those two pitches the crazy way the Waterford County Board are making fixtures, its bat sh*t crazy.

Hopefully Kenny gets given the job and brings his own selectors - only way to get past the East/West divide where nobody can accuse anyone of giving any players special treatment.

I would be very happy with Mattie Kenny being appointed, would need a good local appointment to go with him as I doubt he knows the Waterford scene inside out.

But he would be an impressive appointment if we can get him, proven winner with cuala, previous intercounty experience as selector with Galway. Outside man with no accusations of favouritism or local gaa politics.

We could do with a good news story and I'm hoping Kenny is appointed soon and we can begin building for next year

And by all account he doesn’t take any bull****.

I know a lad on the Cuala panel and said Kenny wouldn’t be influence by anybody. Strong minded and excellent coach/manager.

Be a great coup for The Deise.

Comes down to quality of forwards on field and on Bench lads. In the last 15 years Kilkenny had them, Tipp had them, Galway have them and now Limerick have them.

Most teams can produce good defenders, but having forwards who can rack up scores in Croke Park battles is the key ingredient.

Can talk about systems this and system that it’s about been able to score when it counts on a All Ireland final day with a top class defender on you, under severe pressure.

How many of the current Waterford forwards would start on the Galway front 6 for example?

To be fair we dont know because we haven't really seen them play as ''forwards'' in Senior Intercounty hurling, certainly a number of them looked potentially good enough to from their underage careers.

And to be honest I think as a 6 the Galway forward unit are terribly over rated, if you took Canning off it they would be an average at best bunch, despite what some would have you believe Galway's effectiveness basically comes down to Cannnings influence.

It's a good question but equally how many of Limericks six forwards last year would have made Galways starting lineup. A lot can change in a year, Dowling still seen as the main man last year but benched this year.

I do think they have and will have better forwards than the rest for the next few years in Limerick.

Surely that's a misprint! how can you charge a tenner at 1pm and then charge 13euro 3 and a half hours later :o

i know its a double header but that's a disgrace!

Is there ever a day or weekend pass on offer? I know some other counties do it sometimes.

If ever there was a day for fans to stick it out in between the games it’s Sunday. It’s been going on a long time but to expect club fans who want to see the 3 games to fork out €10 and then €13 is a joke.
€13 for a double header 1/4 final isn’t even bad if they didn’t look like such misers by trying to swindle another €10 out of fans a few hours beforehand.
Weekend / Day passes can’t be that hard to organise can they?

To be fair they won the AI last year and he wasn't really a massive influence despite ending up HOTY. He might have been Galway's 3rd or even 4th best forward last year.

Actually been a much bigger influence this year and they lost the final. Problem is Conor Cooney lost form and confidence, Conor Whelan wasn't really being used like he should have, Cathal Mannion was great up until the final but had no influence on the final, Joseph Cooney was the opposite, quiet all year but actually had a good final. Same forwards that shot the lights out last year suddenly started hitting wides this year.

And if we hire the wrong candidate you will be on complaining that players won’t back the manager. If this process results in a good manager i’ll be happy. Is it perfect, no. But should we just hire the next fool who walks in, hell no!

Relax for yourself and go watch a few club games over the weekend boy!

Best of luck to the Waterford lads in the Tony Forristal and Sonny Walsh competitions this weekend. Whatever happens with the seniors, this is where it all starts for many intercounty stars of the future. Let’s hope our lads compete well

Are the players who headed off on their travels this summer able to play for their clubs on their return this year if they have played championship in another country?

So to put it another way you agree that they are being over rated based on a small sample size and returned to the true levels this year?

Did I hear Thomas McCarthy on wlr say Mattie Kenny has rules himself out? Came in on the end of it so not sure was he saying after Pat Ryan rules himself out or of he said Mattie Kenny ruled himself out.
