Ireland finished 11th in the 2018 Junior World Championships following a poor world championships and a 6 nations where we had finished 3rd just ahead of Wales and Scotland but considerably behind England and France.

Charlie Ryan, Harry Byrne, James McCarthy, Dylan Tierney are eligible again for under 20s having played in the world championships in 2018
The 2019 Junior World Cup takes place in Argentina and the groups are below(based upon seedings from the 2018 competition)

    France/Argentina/Wales/winner of trophy
    England/Australia/Italy/Ireland
    South Africa/New Zealand/Georgia/Scotland

We were terrible in the past 2 rwc. Hopefully there is some better talent coming through.
Although, I think the coaching may have played a role in our lackluster performances.
    Absolute horror show defensively.

Obviously too early to call but does anyone have any opinions on best possible team, or a few standouts to watch out for in club rugby over the next year?

Obviously the under 19s Who played up will be top prospects. But early to say but look at the season s 19s as many will be there or there abouts.

    Something like this:

    1. Callum Reid(Ulster)
    2. Billy Scannell(Munster)
    3. Michael Milne(Leinster)
    4. Ryan Baird(Leinster)
    5. Charles Ryan(Leinster)
    6. Martin Moloney(Leinster)
    7. Scott Penny(Leinster)
    8. Azur Allison(Ulster)
    9. Cormac Foley(Leinster)
    10. David Hawkshaw(Leinster)
    11. Liam Turner(Leinster)
    12. Stewart Moore(Ulster)
    13. Sean French(Munster)
    14. Aaron O'Sullivan(Leinster)
    15. Jonathan Wren(Munster)

IMO it's probably about the same as last season talent wise.

Munster stronger, Leinster probably about the same, Ulster weaker, Connacht stronger.

    What new ruling?

  • Registered Users Posts: 958 ✭✭✭ArmchairQB

    What new ruling?

IRFU are changing format of league for 2019/20
Their current proposal that they say will be implemented is to have a Premier 1 & 2 made up of 8 teams each with playoffs. With at least 2 teams from each province represented within both divisions. The proposal so far would mean that the top 8 finishers next season are in Prem 1 with 2 dropping to Prem 2 and 4 dropping from prem 2 to what is crrentlly 2a. there will have to be 2 connacht and 2 ulster clubs in Prem 2 so further teams from Leinster & Munster will be dropped to 2A to accomadate as no Ulster or Connacht club in 1a next year so cant qualify for Prem 1. Will be messy if they get their way and some clubs will suffer Ob right on that fringe with Naas, Wesley, Mary's etc. Tarf recruiting a gazillion players to make sure they are safe so expect alot of them not to get the game time they are expecting this year I have heard so their 2 houses must be full at this stage.Terenure recruiting well, Lansdowne heard not to active after early moves for Harry Byrne & Dave O'Connor, Marys loosing a few, Belvo with Crosbie and others back in the frame will be strong in 1b this year but Leinster teams will need to be in top 4 of 1b to guarantee Prem 2 the following year. All very messy and a few intresting weeks and months ahead. No doubt plenty of movement ahead dont see many 20s playing AIL 1a this year outside of new academy entrants, sub academy lads will struggle altough one or two could suprise.

No idea. Just posted info as I saw it. Possibly less teams want to qualify for premier division or want face top sides and get a hammering. Could be larger number of clubs in 3rd division this season

Yeah looks like less teams going for prem 1 with Suttonians,NUIG,Naas,Buccs all just goin for prem 2. No Tarf or UCD seconds either

None of them were in Prem 2 this year so perhaps just feel better to stay in division 3. Trinity u20s 2nds have generally been that bit stronger than other clubs so they'll stay in qualifiers.

What is the obsession with James Kenny on this? Granted he had a good sct campaign and got a reward in a u19 cap out of it but he’s never proven himself at a provincial level and is extremely overrated by people on this

I think he has been unlucky with injuries. He is something that most Leinster 9s don't have, big and fast.

Not sure anyone has been "over rating" him. I just think people felt he looked a prospect in school but haven't seen a lot of him since

He had a couple of good games for a side that over achieved not sure he was ever much of a prospect for the next level , don’t forget he got shown up by Patterson in the semi

and he comfortably outplayed Patterson when Lansdowne u20 met UCD u20 last season.

He certainly was a prospect for an academy position, injury prevented him and Patterson from having a proper competition for that academy place.. Patterson being very lucky to get that spot in the academy.

ultimately it comes down to the position, which is rarely produces prospects of that size/speed and the limited game time Kenny got last season due to injury.

Agree with your qualifiers. Hard to call so early but think we should give it a good go along with UCD and Lansdowne from what I've heard.

Predictions for premier 1 are about right but far too early to be discussing overall winner. Sure you dont know for some clubs what numbers will be like and who they have playing for them

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭D14Rugby

Cant really predict winners until lc points and cao offers as they'll have an impact on squads.
Wesley/Rock and Marys/Belvo seem the main ones up for contention for qualifying though but again depends on who they get in

Not good for Trinity with both of them missing so much time withn 20s. Likely to be one the favourites to fall out of top 10 in 1a if league goes to 8 teams if IRFU plan goes ahead

Milne, Clarkson, Baird. Penny, Hawkshaw and O'Sullivan would be the ones I'm aware of - any others to really keep an eye on?

John McKee is the Ulster prop was the Irish Schools captain last year, so that'll be interesting to watch.

Salanoa is the Hawaiian kid. No idea how his transition to rugby has gone so far, but those are good props he's competing against for a spot.

Lansdowne struggling with their recruitment this year from what I've been told from a 20's perspective. Old Belvedere pushing hard at Senior and 20s level.

Blackrock have recruited plenty of big names which makes you wonder. Was told Hawkshaw has joined Clontarf with Baird and Penny going to UCD.

Belvo will find it difficult again at 20s level more a socila side than serious rugby going on last few years evidence, Rock throwing huge cash around again this year but it is where good 20s players go to die and spend all of it in Coppers ( If only Fergus Slattery knew what was really going on in his club instead of lecturing others). UCD, Trinity, Lansdowne & Tarf likely top 4. If people remember this time last year much the same was said about the clubs above which didn't work out for Rock whop did the same last year, Belvo didn't qualify, Lansdowne won the League, Tarf continued improving & the Colleges blew hot and cold mostly hot but they should be winning the 20s league every year with their resources and scholarships attracting the cream. Tarf and Lansdowne will lead the charge aginst them but not going to be any dramatic changes in top 4 this year except possibly Terenure who can get a good run going as most of the team will have played togetrher all thru school and be that bit ahead come start of the league. They could dislodge a Lansdowne or Tarf team on their day
