We hope. Ireland is looking a decent target for them the last few weeks, or at least their proxy's in the media.

I dunno, I find it hard not to think of the politics of Brexit when I think of anything relating to England right now, especially considering they are more than happy to place an international border around 80km from my house.

The Tories will blame factions within the Tories or they'll blame the DUP.

Truth be told they'll make most use of the boogy man they've turned the EU into but who knows. What I do know is that the more I read about Nigel Farage the more I think he is one of the most obvious and awful con men existing in the UK today. That he still has a captive audience and is still a populist figure baffles me and gives me despair.

Trump is worse but I think the bed was made for him a long while out. Farage is just as obvious a charlatan and it astonishes me that he has any purchase in the public domain.

Pretty much every politician is a scumbag. You should get a load of the low I.Q ****bags we elect over here.
Although, I do recall the fools that were in office when I was growing up in Dublin.

Gotta say that I think England do have a decent chance of making the final.
Football is so bad. England have nothing, little skill, no attacking nous, They just plod their way through matches.
Belgium for me have been at least somewhat entertaining. Japan too. Both sides attacked with skill and brains. Brazil are good but, I can't stand watching Clark Gable(Neymar). He is arrogant to the point I hope he loses. Just him. Lose Neymar you gob****e.
I think Croatia will beat the Russians. Croatia are surprisingly good.
Uruguay have talent but, if France click, they could take it all. I want Belgium, but I think the winner of Uruguay/ France will take the spoils.
Football is so...... unglamorous these days.

I think you're being a bt harsh on England. They're not very glamorous, but Harry Kane is excellent and would have probably had a better result yesterday had he not been fouled so much. His ankles must be in bits ths mornng. They are very disciplned and work their socks off in defence. They just ran out of energy in the final quarter and gave Columbia a bit of a leg up. They probably won't win, but they'll get close. I'm thinking France will win it.

ITV reacting like England just made it to the final.

Yeah a national TV station of a football mad country reaching the QFs for the first time in 12 years getting excited is pretty odd alright...

I guess it's because we get exposed to their media but I find it hard to believe that the media in other countries doesn't get just as excited about their national teams chances.

Look I'm an unashamed football fan but I'm sorry this WC has been really enjoyable. Obviously there are some dud matches over a 64 game (or whatever it is) tournament nut there have been some brilliant moments.

England don’t have a midfield capeable of creating chances for Kane. As good as he is, he can’t do it all himself. Their ball control and skills are average to poor and they will really struggle to break down the Swedish defence, don’t see them getting past the next round.

Takes a lot for me to be genuinely happy for an England world cup win, but the Colombians managed it somehow.

Yeah, don't disagree with that. They're heavily dependant on set-piece scores because of it. But they're dogged and disciplined and that's what's giving them an edge. Often times, it's the team that works as a unit that wins major tournaments and England seem to have that.

I actually meant that the English press would much rather blame one of their own players/management than any other individual. Because there's far more mileage in that story. We've seen it over and over again.

I'm looking forward to seeing if Sweden can make more happen against them. I'm not expert at all but I'm still very much unimpressed by that English team. Although they could improve. A number of very average players throughout that side, you'd think the likes of France and Brazil are far superior.

I spent my childhood in a town that was torn to pieces by English football fans and local families were under siege by them for multiple nights in a row, so I make no apologies whatsoever for looking forward to their exit, despite living there for a good number of years.

England are low on quality but high on organisation and work ethic. They also have a striker who is in top form and a couple of other front guys who are capable of taking a half chance.

Most importantly, they absolutely work their socks off. It starts up top with their front players closing down anything and hassling the opposition into sloppy passes. They squeeze the life out of teams and play a far more traditioanlly English style game than more recent teams did. If they run out of legs, they can struggle and a team like Brazil who can keep the ball and slow it right down should be able to deal with them.

But they have absolutely nothing to fear from the other teams in their half of the draw even allowing for the form of Croatia.

So you're saying they put 'em under pressure?

England are so poor to watch. Don't think their midfield is good enough to win

It was very nearly Jordan Henderson but he has dodged the bullet for now

Whilst his penalty was a nice height and he could have hit it with more pace, it wasn't even a bad penalty. The goalkeeper did very well to get to it.

Dier's penalty to send them through was the worst England penalty, I thought.

Hendersons penalty was rubbish...if the keeper dives the right way he gets it 9/10 times ... perfect height for a save,

It was a well struck penalty, but the keeper knew exactly where he was putting it from his body shape.

    Pickford's save was fantastic.

1982 Brazil side was unbelievable. Italy beat them in one of the best matches I've ever seen. That world cup was great as was the 1974 one. The Dutch side in 74, was probably the best side Ive6ever watched. They made football inspiring and magic like Brazil in 82.
Ah, the good old days. In 74, Poland were exceptional and fun to watch. Plus they eliminated England in the qualifiers. Brian Clough was conmmentrating that match and he called the Polish keeper a clown afterwards. England had Keegan, Alan Clarke, and other fantastic players. Ray Clemence let in a soft goal which basically ended his England career. Enter Peter Shilton for years of mediocrity and English despair.

Complete hyperbole. The only rubbish penalty was Columbia's third. All others were anything from well struck to excellent.

    Pickford's save was fantastic.

I can't recall which one but it was very reminiscent of one of Seaman's penalty saves...Spain in '96?

Excellent reaction. But the save during normal time before the goal was special.

It was rubbish....any goalkeeper will tell you that's the penalty they always want ..you have to choose a side ..we never get anything in the top corner...or hardly in the bottom corner... but anything approx 2 feet off the ground is very saveable unless it's shaving the inside of the post ..and it wasn't.
    It was poorly taken

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

The normal time shot was going wide! I mean still an incredible save... but... if it was going wide... and then it led to a corner... and they scored from that corner... technically he cost them the win... and England suck

We'll agree to disagree. There are far easier penalties to save that any decent keeper would prefer to face.
