I got engaged recently and my wife to be insisted on a gift. I was thorn between This, a speedmaster and a seamaster. ultimately this is the one that looked right for me.

Congrats on your engagement, nice watch. We'll be 20 yrs hitched this year, I doubt if da boss will give me permission to buy a watch with my our own money, never mind buy a watch for me. Amazing the way priorities shift as we get older, have kids, pay for a house etc. enjoy it while you can.

But the 'I'm thinking of buying a rifle, honey ' excuse still works about once a year, might be one to put on the back burner for later;)

I threw a leather strap on the Explorer back when I was in Scotland. It's back on the bracelet now, but it looks good I think on the antique black leather.

Rolex looks class on the vintage leather!

@Frankie Pentangeli - what strap is that on the Tissot, sailcloth? Any link to where you bought it?

It's a 'premium' Nato from Watch Obsession. Wearing it today, like it very much! Definitely better quality than the other ones I bought.

Not stupid they saw you coming money either, unlike the Omega and Tudor examples that are truly daft prices. I've examined both in the hand and they are what they are; nylon G10 straps. Better finished than the Chinese eBay examples at five for a fiver, but not 200 quids worth, more like 20-30 quids worth. So not unlike your example Frankie.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Pity they only have it in black (with either orange, red or grey edges)

And it's a Zulu, not a Nato, is it? As in the Nato has two layers of its thin strap between your watch and your wrist but a Zulu has just one layer of thicker strap, or have I got that arseways?

I've never had a Zulu, but I think that setup would workout best for me (nylon or sailcloth). Seems very hard to find. I would pay a premium for a decent strap. Any help much appreciated :)

That's correct. The exception being a 5 ring Zulu which, I think, is more like a NATO than a 3 ring Zulu.

Maybe it's cos I'm cheap, but I really have not found the need to pay a premium for nylon straps. I bought a bunch of cheapo ones from eBay for my SMP.

Don't get me wrong Eoin, I'm no man known to be paying over the odds :D

But I find it hard to find a good quality navy 3 ring Zulu nylon or sail cloth for my Seamaster. And if I found one, I'd be happy to pay for it even if it was not particularly cheap.

I am nuts for the amount of straps I buy but generally the best strap is one you have broken in yourself. While you were typing your last post I was in the kitchen removing the second flap from a 5 ring navy zulu. So now it's a 3 ring and it needs to be beaten a little to soften it up, dang it's too late to get the hammer out

Currently I am looking at Erika's Originals Marine Nationale straps and at €50 and up for a stretchy nylon strap it's an expensive outlay. They seem to get good reviews.

Also don't be afraid to add a little orange stripe to your blue seamaster the extra splash of colour might be quite nice.

Looks like mods are cheapskates too;)

I'm very happy with natostrapco decent quality and they include worldwide shipping in the price. They also sell strap hardware so you can experiment too.

If that's at me, my strap is a Nato - two layers of strap between the wrist and the watch. I notice HDMI has a very similar one on his ad.

The normal NATO from WO is alright, but I wouldn't be mad on it. There's a noticeable difference in the comfort and feel between the premium and normal. To me, at least, though, these are my first NATO straps so my opinion isn't particularly well informed. I just threw them on to the order for the craic when buying the Hirsch strap. I regret nothing!

I'll probably pick up a Zulu or two now for variety and maybe even a perlon for the hell of it.

Its from 1975 I think, cost just under €40. No strap, got that for about 20 on watchbandcentre. Can't afford anything expensive atm, might go for a HMT (Hindustan Machine Tool Co) Sona next, some nice ones for €20! Supposed to be decent quality for the money.

Lovely piece, wear it in good health.
That is interesting you mention HMT, as I was just thinking how the case looks like the HMT Sona. They too are excellent value pieces for the money, and the manual wind Citizen based movements are durable. Lovely domed acrylic crystal on them too. The Pilot and Sona are my favourite models of them.

I hope its genuine, it has rounded lugs at the bottom which I think on genuines
I'll definitely be visiting the site you mention here.

Yes, the Komandirskie range are great value pieces. The tank one is iconic. Both the Komandirskie and Amphibia are great value/quality for the money. I think for the under 100 Euro price tier; only the Seiko 5 range, or a Casio MDV106 can compete really. Generally speaking if a Russian/Ukrainian seller on Ebay has 100% feedback on Ebay one can buy with confidence. The only real negative is the typical 4 week delivery.

Many thanks for this post. It makes me feel better and justifies my interest/hobby/obsession in watches.
I thought I was alone doing things like this, as I recently purchased a 114060 and then 116613LN; as I liked both the white gold, and yellow gold hands and hour markers on their respective dials. I then sold the former as I could not justify owning 2 Submariners; date and non-date at the same time.
But I stand guilty as charged as I have previously bought 2 of the same pieces, just to have a spare to wear when one goes sway for a service.
I haven't quite got to the Fidel Castro level of 2 Rolexes on the same wrist yet though!

My latest piece. I saved 1300 Euro purchasing it from the Rolex Boutique in London, rather than Weirs in Dublin. (11,300 Euro v 12,600 Euro).

Might want to add a link or two to that Rolex before the bracelet gets stretched
    Looks very tight

It's just the angle of the picture. I can actually slide my little finger under the bracelet (although that's with one notch in from the max on the glidelock).
I have 8" wrists to the bracelet looks full you see.

I always assume wearing it tight would cause stretch but apparently wearing loose is worse as it allows movement. Stretch is not the bending of the bars in the links but wear within the links. Wearing it looser means more movement in the bracelet and subsequently wear as the bracelet moves and grinds against micro pieces of grit.

Seems to be lots of different opinions.

if its too loose or too tight it will wreck the bracelet in the long run, wrist sizes change with body temp too
found this online and he probably explains it better than i will

The correct fit for a bracelet is to be able to slide your little finger under it at all times (hot or cold body temperature).
One should be able to slide the piece from under a shirt cuff to the hand with a flick of the wrist.

It's more considered Tron inspired than Trek.

This is the other one I have, from the same company. The current production version is more plastic band than metal.

    fgC9F2z.jpg

The company is called "Tokyo Flash", they specialise in unusual watches. Once you know how they work, they are surprisingly easy to tell the time with.
