Really? I've heard another rumor.. but that's the thing about small towns..gossip is everywhere

Somebody mentioned by stander effect but surely applies more to strangers you arent personally attached to and not your friend, or even acquaintance, being murdered in front of you

And if girls did this it makes the murder even more shocking. That would be 3 of the most tragic and strange murders in recent irish history all within a fortnight of one another

I would have thought so too (i linked to it earlier in the thread).
Unless they didn't think that he was in any real danger until it was too late.

I still do not understand why nobody contacted any authorities though. Why not ring an ambulance?

This happened in my hometown. He was found just across from my home, in a field I would've hung out in when I was a youngster too.

I knew this chap to see (I'm a fair bit older than him). He was quiet and unassuming. He was a very nice boy as far as I could tell. No trouble. I don't understand why someone would do this to him.

it is the weirdest thing ever to see my little hometown up on the news as the site of a dreadful murder. I never would've imagined something so heinous could happen there - everyone knows everyone and nothing very exciting ever happens there.

I'm shocked. I'm shocked he's gone. I'm shocked someone could do such a thing. I'm shocked no one has come forward with any useful information yet. I'm heartbroken for his family. And I'm horrified that this is only one of many murders in this country recently. I don't understand.

I can't stop thinking about him and how he probably felt safe being so close to home. Thinking about how horrific his last moments were. Thinking about him lying there unfound for hours in the field - how someone just left him there. I haven't been sleeping well. I just want whoever did it to be caught soon.

Seems that when it happened most of the 20 people had left the field and there was only a small number present, one of whom was a teenage girl who the media seem to be focussing on https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/garda-probe-whether-teenage-girl-was-involved-in-murder-of-cameron-reilly-36956265.html
Gardaí are investigating if a teenage girl was involved in the murder of Cameron Reilly, it has emerged.

The 18-year-old student was found strangled and beaten in a field in Dunleer, Co Louth, at the weekend.

His remains were found at 8.30am on Saturday, but gardaí believe he was murdered hours earlier.

A group of up to 20 male and female teenagers had been drinking and socialising in the area the day before his remains were found. It's believed that only a small number of people were present when the murder happened.

Detectives have identified a number of people - including teenagers known to Cameron - who were either involved or witnessed the murder. A female juvenile is also believed to have been present at the time.

A source last night told the Irish Independent: "The number of people present when Cameron was murdered is being whittled down, and a girl is believed to have been there."

I'm not too far from there either. Have a son the same age. I can't get over it. Have heard so many different stories at this stage. I can't understand how the people involved won't just come out and say what they saw. To leave him there is just awful. Dunleer would have been one of the safest places for any child to be in.

Definitely. Nothing ever happens there, it's just so small and quiet. I can't believe something so horrible could happens metres away from my parents home. Everyone is in shock. If there were witnesses, I just don't understand them not coming forward by now. Or why they wouldn't call for help.

I hope they figure it out soon. There's all sorts of gossip and stories flying about but ya can't believe all you hear. When I heard who was found first (before it was announced who it was in the news or anything) people were saying his throat was slit and all sorts. But that turned out to be nonsense. I just hope he didn't suffer for long but my heart tells me strangulation isn't exactly a nice way to go :( Just don't understand how anyone could do that to be honest.

His last moments must have been terrifying, and knowing there were people there that wouldn't help :(

Also my hometown. Whilst i didnt really know Cameron, i knew his family who are such lovely people. He had a close-knit family who are loving and caring. I've no doubt he has been brought up to be decent, respectful, well-mannered, kind, caring, friendly and hardworking. This is how I'd describe his family. Neighbourly people who'd help anyone. This is the most devastating and cruel act and I dont know how they'll ever heal from it.
These youths who stood by and didnt call anyone for help are all cowards and certainly not his friends. They have to be people who knew him, whether from school or from being neighbours of the family.
He deserved so much better..whoever did this is pure evil.

Edited to add: from knowing the area, he also wasn't in a field as such..It's a green strip in front of a row of houses. He was killed about a 40s walk from his grandparents house and its not possible that people in the houses onlooking didnt hear the commotion. Dunleer residents who know anything need to speak up so Cameron and his family can get justice.

What's the Garda presence like there? Is there a station or is it covered by one of the bigger ones?

I'm kinda echoing what others have said but there are a lot of grim stories in the news regarding young kids/adults getting themselves into serious trouble.

I think there needs to be some sort campaign or watchdog set up in schools to help with parents bringing up their children. It's probably a bit too late for most but it's something that could be started in early in primary school.

I mean, you have to do lessons and pass a test for driving a car. Surely something could be implemented for parents. Maybe not as regimented but at least something that would help parents know how to handle raising children and teenagers.

    That is terrible.

I was picturing a field at the back of the town or something similar to that.

You are right though, even with the 'bystander effect', the people who stood by, fled, didn't ring an ambulance, and haven't spoken up, are cowards to the highest extent of the word.
I hope this follows them for the rest of their lives, if they are lucky enough to have zero legal consequences.

It would initally be a bit understanding to have maybe run with the rest of them, given their ages (assuming they are all around the same age), but none of the rest of it.

Jeez, with all the murders going on these past few weeks, this country is getting worse.
Prayers and thoughts go out to Cameron and his family. I hope they get justice.

There is a small station in the village. The hours and resources to man it are dependent on a larger unit. Drogheda to my knowledge

Someone with a bit of moral fibre could have contacted a confidential line even after they all left. We don't and will never know. We can only hope that someone who was there does have that moral fibre.

All unrelated.. A statistical anomaly I hope, rather than a sign of the times or a harbinger of things to come.

Was it actually that green strip just through the trees at the green in Beechwood? That's even closer to home then. I thought maybe they were searching there because you can get to the field at the back of glen dimplex up there. I'm not sure but the vans that took his body were at the factory, not up in rivervale. I don't know exactly where he was found but if it was there that's right out in the open! God love him. Poor Cameron and his poor family.

I'm hearing now it was possibly a teen girl. What in the **** like. How could someone do that to him, I just do not understand at all.

He was strangled and also had injuries to his face and teeth. Would a teen girl be able to do this alone? Any word on his phone? Would whoever did this not have some injuries too?

I don't know. Perhaps if she was bigger than him. He was a gentle chap. But you're right... could be more than one. Or she may have just been a witness to something.

No update on the phone situation yet. My Mam said they've searched the skip near our house so they're still looking at the mo I think.

I know I go on about this, but I'd bet substantial amounts on the kids involved being known as antisocial troublemakers who have never been dealt with up until now. Maybe not, but it won't surprise me at all if we find out that they're known locally for bullying, vandalism, hanging around verbally abusive passers-by - ye know the type.

Yep to my knowledge thats exactly where i believe it happened. I could be wrong but I was there yesterday after the vigil and the pics in the news depict that strip. The tape in the ditch is what I recognised which you can see the Rivervale side. I too thought at first maybe the field behind closer to Glen Dimplex. And maybe it is and not where i thought? But here it explains better the proximity of Shamrock Grove and Rivervale residents being asked to come forward if they know anything

There's an RTE news link (I can't post url) with headline: "Fresh Appeal issued over murder of Cameron Reilly" which shows that strip very clearly

If it was a girl, he may not have fought back.

I think they found the phone in a girls house 5km from where he was found, 10km from where he lived. It was in the Mirror I think. (Link further back on thread)
    Edited - https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/gardai-find-tragic-teen-cameron-12613283
If it was a girl, he may not have fought back.
That is what I was thinking, but surely when she was strangling him he would have?

    Edited..

I am not sure that his phone has been found. The mirror seem to be the only paper reporting it, and RTE updated their story and hour ago, also still mentioning it on the rte news.

No I am from that village. Guards were on lmfm today to say it wasn't true and the phone is still missing. You'd wonder where the papers get their info from. They also found a phone in our village on Sunday evening which belonged to the parish priest which was also being reported as Cameron's phone

Those rags would print anything to sell a few extra papers.
The more spectacular the better for them.
I stopped buying and reading rubbish newspapers years ago.

Ye. I was wondering about that. Whoever has his phone would need his pin etc to access it I'd assume?

There's a tiny bit of comfort that the Gardai have had quick results in getting those responsible for Ana and Jastines deaths. I hope they'll get a good conclusion with Cameron too given they have established that there were people around. It's only a matter of time.

How is there still no progress on this!? They know there were witnesses, this is supposedly a small town where everybody knows each other. Several people must know who it was.
