All this talk about a middle ground that was missed... It's bollocks.

The citizens assembly were not full of people looking for the widest possible abortion law. They were people looking for a sensible compromise, and when they listened to the stories of women who had abortions, and to doctors, and to lawyers, they gradually realized that you can't legislate for a bunch of narrowly defined edge cases, because that only creates new edge cases you haven't thought of. You need flexibility, trust, and respect.

And the same when the debate moved to the Dail. Do you think Varadkar and Martin and Coveney expected to be proposing this legislation? But they listened, and they came to the same realization.

Because in the end, there isn't a middle ground. Either you trust women to make their own decisions, and take them as seriously as you would, whether they come to the same conclusion or not. Or you think they have to be prevented from making decisions, in case they decide to do something you don't approve of.

It's not about deciding what we approve of and don't...it's about the creation and destruction of life when it's not needed. There's plenty of case's where this is a hard fact

I have one friend who's a male...he's had 3 children terminated before 30 to my knowledge anyway. For no reason other than it wasn't convienient

    Do you think that's ok??

I certainly don't. I'm more than happy to support the hard cases and places where Ireland needs to improve. This is drastically needed and totally necessary

I do not support a system that can end in eugenics and reduces the worth of the Life of an unborn to a mere transaction. I don't think that's right. People can do it all the wish, but I won't support that

You forget the third party who's life was both created and taken has zero say in the matter.. further ethical dilemmas arise when we objectively factor this into account

You don't know how your wife feels about abortion? I find that bizzare.

    I wouldn't think so.

A lot of people don't give a fck about it.

If you don't care about it, it's unlikely something you'd bring up in conversation and there for unlikely to know or care.

I'd say he doesn't know what his wife thinks about the price of sugar in sudan either and probably cares more about the price of the sugar...

I'll just say 'wow' yet again. Done and dusted surely..........

    YES 68% NO 32%.
@IrishTimes exit poll shows Ireland has voted

Interesting... Don't trust these polls after Trump and Brexit

Seems to have been a very high turnout.

Threw an eye down the list as I was being marked off and near all names were marked through and that was about half seven.

    Ballot box was stuffed too.

I listed the current choices available. I am advocating to adding another choice for women in absolutely **** situations. People who voted no today voting against giving people in dreadful situations a choice to decide for themselves. How very ****ing compassionate of them

Another misrepresentation of the vast majority of No voters who are in favour of limited abortion for unfortunate cases but are against unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks.

I'm no fan of abortions. Horrendous.

Imagine an Irish woman pregnant with a very much wanted baby, at 12 weeks the consultant confirms an FFA with a strong heartbeat. Mothers choices,

Wait to be induced at 32 weeks for the child to die almost immediately,
wait for the babies heart to stop or
travel to Britain and organise an abortion in a foreign country and then bring the baby back to be buried in Ireland.

No voters today voted to keep that as the status quo for Irish women in tragic circumstances. ****en despicable carry on.

Any lads here who voted no, I really hope you don't ever have to hold your distraught wife in the above circumstances and tell her everything is going to be ok.

It's not, not for a long time.

Anyone who voted no was due to the 12 weeks and if they did then I appauld there will to stand up for there morals and not because they are religious nuts or hate women. And for some in the yes campaign to try as paint them as Hitler, women haters, religious nuts or misogynistic is pathetic in my view.

Also as another person said if there is a no for I guarantee in no later then 2 years we would have another referendum to repeal the eight with either no mention about on demand or the term written in the constitution.

The current situation is an absolute disgrace where horses are treated better than Irish women.
I've read some exaggerated for effect posts in my time, but that one stands out as being completely hysterical and utterly removed from reality. If you truly believe horses are treated better than Irish women I really don't know what to say to you, or anyone else that comes close to believing that nonsense.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

The poll suggests that the margin of victory for the Yes side in today’s referendum will be 68 to 32 – a stunning victory for the Yes side after a long and often divisive campaign.

Excellent! I said earlier 65-35 if not better - resounding victory for sensible feeling and considerate people of this country

    I voted No.

But oddly for the same reasons you voted yes.

I'd like the 8th removed but I can';t get away from the proposed legislation.
It's a bad choice on offer and I'm not going to accept it, no matter how much I'd like to accept parts of it. For me the current situation is better than the proposal.

I totally agree with you, had to vote no.
