The amount of imbeciles I'm seeing posting to facebook groups on both sides of the campaign asking if their vote still counts if they did a tick or put a circle around Yes.
How hard is it to write an X?!? So many spoiled votes from people not following directions properly.

Once there is a clear indication of the voters intent it will be counted.

Only thing I can think of is possibly overthinking the vote and then panic, a bit, in the booth and do something silly like that

If something is more polarising, it can have the opposite effect: some people will feel like staying at home. I'm not saying your wrong but it will be interesting to see if men vote in the same numbers as women. If the voting holds up after 5pm this evening, then I think we are in for a higher turnout than SSM.

(By the way, even though I'm old, I'm not implying that men are at work and women are at home. I'm simply relaying the fact that statistically-speaking there are more stay-at-home parents who are women who may have already voted).

Well, the phrase refers to the two poles as in people strongly feeling one way or another. Those are not the kind of people who are ditherers.

I’m on the No side myself.
However I gave my vote to my 16 year old daughter and she is on the yes side, just about. Not entirely legal I know but I reasoned it’s a lot more relevant to her than me.

Fair dues to you. Two daughters here who may be directly affected and both advocated for Yes.

As far as I know, a clear mark is required? Once it's in the box and not crossing both boxes or outside a box. O, X or tick - what's the difference. Who signs their signature with an X these days?

My GF's parents and her uncle, all late 60's early 70's, and 2 of them churchgoers, have voted yes.

I guess that life experiences and ability to walk on someone else's shoes count a good deal as well.

My parents in their 70s are voting yes to. I was a little surprised to be honest. Their rational is if it's already happening and people are being put at risk then they should be cared for at home.. I had the opinion that those voting no were just ignorant of the facts but I've debated with quite a few intelligent people in the last few weeks and respect their opinions on no.. Most were worried on unrestricted to 12 weeks. They felt accidental pregnancy should not be aborted. We debated that the so called hard cased couldn't be legislated for without the removal of the ammendment.. I guess at some point it's unfair to try and convince someone that they are wrong.

Yes, but that does not mean that all 3.3 million voters are at one pole or the other!

No indeed but it is historically a topic that a hell of a lot of people feel strongly about. With SSM, many people I knew simply weren’t motivated to vote.

Apparently one of the women went back and asked after she realised her mistake and she was told it would be considered spoiled and not counted, this was from the person overseeing the station.

I hope they're wrong though and they're counted!!

No, people tend not to talk about things that didn't happen.

If something is classified as a spoiled vote, then it shouldn't be counted. Otherwise we would open the doors to all sorts of challenges when votes are counted.

Any other mark other than what is requested would be considered spoilt. But then do people usually sign/mark stuff without actually reading it first?

It'll be the decision of staff in the count centre whether it's regarded as spoilt or not. But when I did tallies for the marriage referendum, ballot papers with ticks instead of Xs were counted. I don't recall seeing circles, but I think they would be counted as well, as long as it was clearly for Yes or No.

If you want to ensure a No vote you should think about this rationally. There may be a chance that undecided voters are reading this thread given that it is currently trending on Boards.ie

Do you think that this is the best way to persuade them to vote No? I think the official No campaign turned a lot of undecided away from them over the past week.

I think both sides have had their members who behaved disgracefully. Hopefully most voters used their own intelligence, research and beliefs in deciding their vote and were not swayed, either way, by anyone screeching in their face or insulting them on the internet

Sure only not too long ago the TDs voted to make it compulsory to stand during the prayer in the Dail, and people are talking about complete separation of religion and state? Long ways from that.

Was conflicted for a long time. Decided this morning to vote "No", as I realised that I wasn't yet happy with the notion of unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks. That being said, as someone who did struggle to make a decision, if the Yes vote prevails I won't be a sore loser about it.

Best of luck to both sides. Hope we can come out of this as friends despite our differences.

    Not counted
It can be counted. It doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be
