More a case look we're trying? last day of season ticket sales?
Not sure Jantjies is what we need, but beggar's cant be choosers! Always get the feeling Ulster prefer a marque name for seats on bums rather than performance on pitch.
Would take several Ludik type players to strengthen the squad over one Jantjies right now.
Everything Ulster does is ass backwards it seems. :D

That epitomises my brain working faster than I can type lol! but it is the Ulster way, **** it up, return and try and plaster over it.

Well, apparently we're offering him zero, anyway.

    Volavoka, that is.

So are we take from all this until Carberry makes up his mind we're in limbo? and even then once he does we'll have potential signings blocked.

Am sure Carbery has made up his mind and we will be told who which no 10 will move where after the final this weekend.

Jantjies definitely isn't what Ulster need. He wouldn't be coming up here to sit on the bench and he isn't going to play anywhere else but 10. And I'm with swiwi on this guy. He's flaky. Ulster do not need flaky right now. So regardless of the IRFU it wouldn't be a good idea IMO.

Surely signing Jantjes would be worse for McPhillips development than signing Carbery?

Either way McPhillips progress would be slowed, but at least Carbery plays 15 and would be with Ireland on a semi regular basis.

I'd love to see McPhillips given the nod for next season and a proper run behind the first choice pack. I think he has a genuine shot at being a bolter for the RWC if he gets that level of game time and performs well.

If Carbery doesn't move for a season, I think he could really put his RWC spot in jeopardy simply by virtue of the fact that McPhillips is a similar type guy who can play 15 and 10 and will be getting the required game time. The big issue for McPhillips is that he doesn't kick at goal for Ulster. He needs to start doing that before he'll be in the mix.

Regardless, Ulster need to sign another 10 whether it's a top level outhalf to start or a journeyman to provide a supporting role to McPhillips. Hopefully it's the latter and the available NIQ spot is used to bring in a top level back three player.

Jantjies would be a terrible signing, for me. He's unreliable, wouldn't be staying long term, would cost big money and would block McPhillips completely.

Why would Ulster take kicking duties off Cooney?

    Cooney is excellent at it.

I agree by the way, all the talk is about Carbery getting game time to help him prepare for the WC. There really is not much difference between Carbery and McPhillips. As I said before, Carbery is hyped but it's not really based on anything of substance at 10. This is one of the big reasons why Ulster being left with both McPhillips and Carbery doesn't really help, it's two players of very similar standing.

Agree with both paragraphs there, we need a journeyman who can transfer knowledge/experience and share workload. Not become first choice unless required.
Is anyone starting to query Bryn's recruitment choices? saying that it could all be a big play, reject this and then IRFU agree who we really want?
Still think we'd be better splitting the money over squad development than firing it at the likes of marque players. have we 1 NIQ left?

They shouldn't. I'm speaking from McPhillips' perspective. If I was him, I'd be working on my kicking every day this summer and trying to get the odd game where I can demonstrate an ability. Cooney can still kick in the ECC but if McPhillips even gets the duties in a handful of Pro14 matches, it will stand to him.

Wasn't there a very similar debate around Jackson and Pienaar taking the kicking duties

Indeed, not a bad thing. Let the outhalf sort his game/passing then slowly give him more responsibility as he developes. It's a luxury most clubs don't have.

Yeah, and for ages people thought Madigan was a poor goal kicker because Nacewa and McFadden took them when he was starting out. No harm to take whatever pressure you can off the young guys.

Any gossip on a possible 10? Perhaps waving a bucket of cash at Steenson/Madigan might fit the bill for the IRFU/Ulster if they wont sign on on Janties. I know they both have contacts but money talks

From memory going back to the U20s McPhillips was a pretty good goalkicker. Didn't he kick against Munster a few weeks ago?

He probably is in a similar position to where Jackson was a couple of years ago.

No Ulster have been rebranded again to IRFU bitch

The union owes Ulster a big signing. Why shouldn't Ulster look at foreign internationals.

I honestly don't believe Ulster would have asked for permission to sign Jantjes. They couldn't possibly have thought it would be approved.

He's about to enter one of the most exciting stages of his career, which is the "he is rubbish because someone else kicks at his province" stage.

If he gets there, you know he's good because it only happens when people are trying to deny his international chances. Paddy Jackson and Ian Madigan both went through this previously.

Regardless of the IRFU, why would Ulster sign him? He’s inconsistent at best and can only play 10. Would a big money signing and therefore wouldn’t bench much, so would impede McPhillips. There would be no real upside to that signing.

I seem to remember McPhillips as being a fairly flaky goalkicker underage??

Taylor Swift would be a better signing at 10 than Jantjes

Eh...nacewa for one more year but at Ulster (10% of games)?

Who the f*ck looks after recruitment up there? "Ooooh shiny. Lets sign him".

I can understand why blocking a move would upset Ulster fans but this is actually beneficial to them.

I seem to remember him coming on for Johnston against NZ and nailing a couple of big kicks. Admittedly a small sample size.

Ulster look at how they can market a player not how he will perform. It like oh he has x amount of international caps he must be good.
Still think this a matter of we've been rejected here so let us have ????? our true target.

It’s a bit of a left field leak for sure. It probably benefits Jjanties (as he’s had a shaky year in super rugby and foreign interest will spook the Boks) and Ulster (to get Carbery/whoever to decide already and get the IRFU as the baddies again) to have this rumor out there.

Funny thing is that this leak could be a bit of marketing in itself. It’s a positive Ulster story to be linked with big names and it makes the IRFU/Nucifora look the evil ones which is always attractive to certain Ulster fans.
