Isn't it better to have a conversation then, rather than let them discover that world on their own and develop the same unrealistic expectation either way?

We are pretty repressive in regards to sex. On the life of my unborn children I have a friend who thinks women piss out of their clitoris, which I admit is hilarious, but it's also sad because it tells me that his partner probably isn't all that satisfied. It's also sad because he's just a normal bloke and probably isn't in the minority of 20-something-lads who doesn't even know what a clitoris is, let alone where it is.

You’ve managed to guess your friends sex life and extrapolate some kind of repression in Irish society re sex from one barely believable conversation.

You don't; you ask the mother.

I should point out that this thread wouldn't be as controversial if it was about giving a 15-year-old boy a copy of Penthouse. Either way you're encouraging masturbation but it's a lot more taboo when it's a female and that's precisely the problem. The subject is far weirder than it actually is in my view.

I don't think women masturbating is a taboo topic at all, talking to your teenage daughter about vibrators is just weird.

    Who knows Franz,who knows....

In Holland you can buy sex toys in some petrol stations.
Now I usually get my kids a bag of jellies or something...but I guess the option is there

You can buy vibrating rings and bullet vibrators in Tesco, Dealz, Dunne's etc, and Groupon regularly have sex toys and whatnot.

AFAIK, Dealz are starting a range of discount vibrators.

I didn't want to embarrass him. It's that stupid that he would feel a bit sheepish I suspect if he knew, but you're right maybe I should have.

Not an easy conversation to have alright. Few drinks would be needed.

I once had to explain to a friend that it was okay to use lubricant (KY) as both him and the mrs were experiencing discomfort. (and no it wasn't that)

Found it a bit odd coming from a grown man in his 30's

Gonna have to be more careful when I tell the kids they can pick a toy in Dealz so :o

My Mrs has to explain to her cousin about foreplay and lube, because her fella was a touch large.

Her cousin had been sexually active since about 14, and was about 28 at the time.

It was so much better a few hundred years ago when we burned people because they were thought to be witches..

Or when doctors gave women digital stimulus to stop hysterics.

Is that it? A choice between burning women thought to be practising the dark arts or giving our daughters sex aids?? No inbetween here?

Christ. I'd be mortified talking to my Mother about vibrators now and I'm 29. Never-mind when I was a teenager. Just...no.

Snap chat tells them all they'll need to know...

This day and age nobody needs to speak to a mum or dad just take naked pics and send them on to strangers.

I've been told several times how "sexually repressive" Irish society is. Yet all the media can talk about lately is sex - especially for women. Men on the other hand are shamed for even noticing an attractive girl. Was there any mention of buying a blow up doll or fleshlight for teenage sons? I'll bet there wasn't.

This is 100% true, in many different ways tbh. The idea of a sexually liberated or confident man is anathema to the current zeitgeist. I've actually had discussions with a friend who confides in her mum about all kinds of kinky sexual experiences, and when musing that I'd never feel comfortable talking to my own family about something like that she has replied very matter-of-factly "well you know, that's because guys are supposed to be all about being responsible and gentlemanly and all that". Honestly makes me furious, but at least at the moment it feels like all we can do is ignore the double standard and hope it doesn't stick around for too long.

Because I believe in gender equality, and despise it when one gender has more cultural freedom than the other? I feel the same way about slut shaming and have argued that frequently on AH. Gender based "rules" need to die altogether, they sicken me.

Replace gender with race any time you see a gender-based double standard and ask yourself if you'd be taken aback by it. Gender based double standards should be no more or less socially acceptable than racial ones.
