He had absolutely no head coaching experience back when he was linked to Munster.

I think he'd do well up here, but he's not been linked to Ulster so no idea why he's being discussed.

He was head coach of Toulon (probably a steep learning curve for him) and also Counties Manukau for 3 years.

Plenty of coaches don't have head coaching experience before arriving at an Irish Province - i.e., Leo Cullen and Johann van Graan.

Think they might have run out of steam on that one!

..which I consider a sad waste of a talented guy. He is probably well past his sell by date but in his day he was a good coach.

He was the head coach at Toulon, when they had just been promoted and had a basket case of a squad. He then reverted to being a player under Philippe Saint-Andre.

Ah, was he the top man that year? Forgot that. Suppose anything is possible at Toulon.

Ulster could do well in the secondary competition which would be a great confidence builder for them.

Lol. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse.

It isn't just Ulster fans speculating and I doubt if any actual Ulster fans hold out any real expectation of a 'good' appointment given the recent history of duds. As for ex-players, Jeremy Davidson is leaving Bordeaux. I have no idea if he is any good or not but he is at the end of the first year of a 3 year deal yet is being ousted for Poux it seems. Not a great sign. So long as we don't get Willie Anderson, Bradley or some failed waster from Oz who is a mate of Nuciforatu.:D

    Just saw this on Twatter.
    " Paul Eddison‏ @pauleddison

On the subject of Brive, they have made Jeremy Davidson their main priority as their next coach. Bordeaux are keen to keep hold of him but would not be a surprise if he did end up in Correze."

Maybe I got the wrong info on Buzz Lightyear.

He has lots of interesting things to say. Was there something in particular you wanted to draw our attention to? :P

Pat Lam was sacked by the Blues, so I wouldn't blame Umaga for their problems.

Unfortunately coaching isn't the problem at the Blues. Nucifora, Lam, Kirwan and Umaga have all failed to turn them around. Even the great Joe Schmidt didn't make a difference (as an assistant). Umaga was a name I thought about for Ulster but I think he has another year left and I haven't heard any rumours of him being sacked.

Ulster should break the bank and go after Wayne Smith.

    Dan McFarland?

9 years coaching experience between Toulon, Counties Manukau and NZ U20s). He got Blues job in 2016.

When was Foley appointed head coach? 2014 I think. So half of what you posted is irrelevant. He isn't a big name coach now. Wasn't back then.

If he was so outstanding why did Munster opt for Foley?

Dunno why there’d be a delay announcing him. Not as if Scotland have anything coming up in the next few weeks.

I take this delay as a sign that the new guy is currently in a sensitive position in his current job. But that could be wrong.

Maybe the DoR is the sensitive one and he is the Assistant?

Assistant at Scotland to assistant at Ulster seems a backward step. Doubt that’s the case.

Or Head Coach under a DoR

Ah yes, the auld semantic promotion.

Not really. At international level you don't have a DoR, it's just a head coach. Assistant coach would be the same as Girvan Dempsey for Leinster. As a head coach in a club or nation, all the other coaches report to you.

Scotland announced McFarland is leaving in mid January to take up head coaching role. Not leaving until January as there’s a 9 month notice clause. He’s a brilliant person and hope he gets on brilliantly up there

If its McFarland and he does have a 9month notice period this is not ideal.  If next season goes badly fans will be told to wait until McF has his first full season under his belt like Kiss.  I can imagine the melt downs already.   Maybe Ulster are hoping this will boost Season Ticket sales?  They extended the window to buy season tickets by a month.

If we have signed another coach who misses half a season we are fcuking clowns. This better not be our guy.

I mean, if he is about to be announced that he's leaving Scotland then...

Maybe Ulster can get him out of that contract early though, maybe that's why they said it needed to wait a few weeks. Fingers crossed.

God, I hope it is. Purely for the meltdown entertainment and to see how Cunningham explains his way out of it.

I hope he's a double agent and takes you down from the inside.

I'm not sure how that would differ from anything we've seen for the last few years though so it'll be hard to tell.

We're going down anyway. Ulster Rugby is dead, the pride is gone. IRFU are getting their way and turning us into a mini mexico.

Time to build that bloody wall.

You might as well do something to develop some local employment up there anyway.

You could well be right. I'm sure that waiting clause in his contract is there in case he goes to another national coaching team. To a club, it shouldn't be the same level of sensitivity. Though they'd probably have to insert a "Don't talk to Joe" clause instead. ;)
