Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

They are 10 year old cars, that's the sort of mileage to expect.

    They’ll do 300k no bother

    Here is my thing.

    Currently have a 2006 523i automatic.

Would get maybe 3500 for it.
And buy the Honda for 3000.

Might have to spend a couple hundred on Honda maybe.

But then savings of 500 each year on motor tax alone. just really hate paying tax.

Then mpg. Currently getting about 22 mpg. Honda may be 40. So another saving.
Parts on the beemer are dear enough. Electric water pump versus pulley one etc. Brake lines recently cost me 200. Battery is going on it now.

All small but all adds up.

    What ye think ?

    I think you're fooling yourself that you'd get 3500 for that 523i...

Cannot see you getting 3.5k for a 06 523i to be honest.

    Ok. 5000 then ;)

Right, so you reckon I’d be doing very well to get near 3500. noted.

Is the 1.8 in the civic the same as the 1.8 in the FRV? Also, I remember there was a post before that said the auto box in the FRV was better than the one in the Civic? Or maybe its the other way around.

Hi. What are you trying to say?

I have an 06 1.8 civic auto 4 years now, and in the main they are bulletproof.
I am getting around 40 mpg on average.
Keep an eye when your looking on the suspension and top mounts etc as the ride is quite firm.

He’s saying the FRV and the Civic 1.8 saloon use a conventional torque converter gearbox and the hatchback uses a robotised manual box.

Thanks mick. Good mpg. Is yours the hatchback ?

I had a 2008 Civic Type S 1.8 petrol and it was pretty bulletproof. Only issues I had was the panoramic sun roof and the blinds for the roof had a habit of sticking and flying open very fast. Known issue on the civic forums but the car you linked are standard sun roofs

All in all, great car and I liked the 1.8 engine.

I'd say like others have said that you'll be very lucky to get anywhere even near €3k for your 523i however there are plenty of 1.8 Civics about and you should be able to pick up one for around the €3k mark and like you say you'll make considerable savings in tax, fuel and possibly insurance every year you have it.

WHAT, my beloved 523i vessel is not worth even 3k, thoroughly disappointing :( :P

Im kinda messin - but serious too, but yeah, suppose no one wants a 12 year old car with high tax etc.

The honda should be an ok thing to drive though? like wont be totally dead etc, like a 1.4 focus or corolla etc

They have 140bhp so while not fast they are no snail either.

Another 8th Gen Civic 1.8 owner, done 20k kms in the last 12 months, averages 45mpg no problem for me, no mechanical issues, although I am planning a suspension refresh soon.

I have heard the automatics until the facelift in 2009/2010 are a bit ****e though. They're called iShift gearboxes for information.

Thanks, woo - 45 mpg, thats great for a 1.8 petrol auto.

im purely on about the Saloon though. And this has the older type traditional auto gearbox, think general slang name for them is slush box. i.e its not the iShift at all

also, think the saloons have a different suspension setup and are not as stiff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,477 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    His is a manual hatchback.

The manual saloon is a little bit harder on fuel than the manual hatch, the i shift doesn’t affect economy on the hatch, and the auto on the saloon is a little harder on fuel than the manual because of different gearing, less gears and transmission losses.

You are right about suspension, the saloon has independent rear suspension and is more settled and a little more comfortable but still relatively stiff.

Does it have to be automatic? Honda do manual better tbh.

Also while these do have 140bhp they are set up for economy rather than performance. In everyday driving they don't feel all that more powerful than a corolla(if you.are looking for a vtec kick look elsewhere) but they are definitely a lot better than a 1.4 focus which isn't difficult tbh.

I've an 07 1.8 hatch auto. As said, it's a different auto box but still a decent car that i'd highly recommend. While it's not a "fast" car it's perfectly competent and will cruise @ 130-140kmh happily enough and still give you the guts it 40mpg while doing that too.

There's an awful lot of 8th gen Civic owners on here and you don't really see any of them saying a bad word about anything.

I'm sorry but either the car you drove had something wrong with it or the corolla was T-Sport or something because the 1.8 civic is considerably faster than even the 1.6 Corolla/Auris and a helluva lot faster than the 1.4 Auris/Corolla.

No there is nothing wrong with either car. In every day driving the civic doesn't feel much faster than the corolla, even on hills or overtaking. Racing them side by side would show that the civic is faster but in every day driving there isn't much between them.

I know on paper the civic is the faster car but in reality it's no rocket ship and the I vtec is setup for economy rather than performance.

Around town I'll admit it feels a bit 1.4 ish but out on the motorway it feels at lot more civilised than a 1.4 corolla. Iirc at 120kmh it's only doing 2250 rpm and still pulls away well without dropping a gear?

I found the 6th gear to be very close to 5th in terms of ratio so not as big of a plus on the motorway as you might thing but still nice to have.

The 1.8 in these just doesn't feel punchy in a way say the 1.8 in a mazda 6 does.

If it's faster on paper, it's faster in real life as well.

I'm guessing you hesitate to rev it to red line, which is really the only way to wake all the horses in vtec engines. Then it's fast enough IMO.

If everyday driving for you is normally between 1500-2500rpm, then definitely you'll consider any vtec engine as slow.

Have a 2007 1.8 hatch. Very lively car when you put the foot down. Highest mpg I ever saw was 47 average on a 450km round trip. Every day driving is around 38 for me

Why would I rev it to the redline? There is no vtec kick on these when you go past a certain rpm like a type r or a 1.6 or 1.8 dohc vtec. The vtec is purely for economy not performance.

Never said it wasn't faster either just that it doesn't feel much faster. We know in a race it will win but in everyday driving conditions it doesn't feel that much better to me.

If I get into a mazda 6 I immediately know im in something more powerful than a 1.4 corolla. Not that the 6 is a rocketship and I know its also less powerful than a civic but it's lively even in everyday driving without going near the redline.

There is a kick, but obviously not as noticable as on more powerful engines.
But vtec is both for economy and performance.
Economy - as you can keep revs low and be gentle with accelerator pedal and you'll get economy, or you can step it to the floor and rev it high, and you'll get performance. Simple really.
Never said it wasn't faster either just that it doesn't feel much faster. We know in a race it will win but in everyday driving conditions it doesn't feel that much better to me.
That's exactly my point. You consider "everyday driving condition" as driving at low revs. No everyone does.
And vtec engines have poor performance and good economy at low revs.
Once you start reving them high, you'll get performance, and loose economy.

If I get into a mazda 6 I immediately know im in something more powerful than a 1.4 corolla. Not that the 6 is a rocketship and I know its also less powerful than a civic but it's lively even in everyday driving without going near the redline.

Because it provides better performace at low revs, at the cost of economy.

Simply speaking - you're trying to say that cars which don't provide good performace at low revs, don't feel powerful in everyday driving. That's just because for some reason you don't like revving engine high in everyday driving.

I'm saying that there are many cars that provide brilliant performance, but need to be revved high to achieve that (espiecially vtec), and for me it's not a problem at all to be revving them high in everyday driving.

It's just we have different approach. Your driving style is better suited for diesels in general, while mine is better suited for vtecs.
For the same reason you think 1.4 golf is completely not suitable for towing, as when you're towing at 2000rpm it indeed isn't.
If I use it and tow at 5000rpm, it will have more than enought power to do the job.

Very hard for me to get 30's in the beemer, always in mid to low 20's.
And I dont do an awful lot of city driving.

re parts, had to replace the water pump on the beemer lately, cost about 600 euro for the part alone, its electric etc. comparable part on the Honda looks like about 50 Euro.

In my opinion no, you have to work it to get the most out of it.

I think what JohnBoy is trying to say is that because of the i-vtec system it's quite gutless under 3k. After that they can certainly move though.

That's it exactly but while it can move in the higher rev range it doesn't change cam profile like the performance vtecs so no kick and different exhaust note because it's a different type of vtec.

Just like the 1.5 eco vtec from the 1990's wasn't about performance either. Even though it did have 114bhp it didn't feel any faster than the regular 1.4 unless you had the 2 cars side by side and you floored it.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting it’s a ‘VTEC just kicked in yo’ type of car but that’s not to say it’s slow.

They seem to be being very cautious with the ad wording. I'd say it's probably fine though if you are actually considering it, it's a good spec, looks nice and original and the new NCT is reassuring.

It'd be hard to go too far wrong if you landed it for €2750ish.

bring your own mechanic and check the car over. They just want rid of it and with the fairly high mileage theyre not willing to offer any warranty. Theyre a reliable car and I wouldn't worry too much about the 'sold as seen' line, it'll actually give you ammunition to make a low ball offer for the car (so long as everything else checks out)

anything major have to be done on these cars around 10 years.

change automatic transmission fluid, replace water pump etc

They are pretty trouble free. However it's no harm to replace fluids but a well looked after example should be maintained in that regard.
