Don't want to derail the thread but put simply what would this box give me that I'm not getting on my recordable sat and terrestrial ariva252?

    Pros
    1. An RTE player that works (on demand button on remote takes you directly to players)
    2. TG4 player
    3. A 7 day rollback guide on rte channels (tg4
    available shortly.
    4. A satellite section with the most popular 40
    channels in order.
    5. Nicely designed remote (can control tv input,
    standby and volume)
    6. Saorview will auto update the terrestrial side of the box if any channel changes frequency

    Cons
    1. Slow switching between terrestrial and satellite
as both systems are separate & have to be
    loaded up separately
    2. No quick channel switching through a 'recall previous channel' button
    3. No button on remote to quickly switch between terrestrial and satellite (requires 3 or 4 button scrolls)
    4. Recording and timeshift not yet available on the box (due mid 2018 but who knows)

With the rte player integrated one will have a lot less need to record anyway though having timeshift (pause, rewind live tv) would be handy.

I would imagine that you would also get RTE AERTEL?

Power city now selling the connect box for 179.95

On a side note, there's a seller on eBay selling a few of them, they are new (according to seller) but the packaging has been opened. Priced at 80 pounds + 10 shipping. Search eBay for "SAORVIEW Powerpoint" for some minor amusement.

May have been returned by purchasers and instead of being sold at a reduced price here, they were (it seems) offloaded to a UK seller to be sold off.

And is anyone surprised that at least some of these boxes have been returned?

How many people do you think unwittingly bought this box under the assumption that:
    a) all of the UK and Irish channels would be organised on one seamless list, and
    b) that the box could record TV (not an unreasonable assumption in 2018!)

That looks like a scam. Two separate ads with different sellers but strange but identical forms. Either one copied the other or it is a scam.

They advertise that it has two sat receivers but we know only one is activated at the present time.

Chromecast will probably come with the updated rte player app.
Do you know when this updated app will be released?

Field Testers/developers or someone who was/is connected. I'd imagine they would be returned if misdirected. Dont think its a scam Sam.

Seller at the bottom of EBay ad seems to be Oyeleke Muritala with an address in Grantham Lincolnshire

    Facebook has same name as being from Lagos, Nigeria / Ifon, Osun, Nigeria;

    But UK-Linked In has the same name as Sales Manager for DigitalPlayhouse Nottingham;

    Take your pick!

I looked into to see where he bought them!

He's just a wheeler dealer. Buying job lots and second hand gear and selling on.

I see there is a “recordings” section on the Saorview Connect app. Has that always been there or has it just popped up? Maybe this long-awaited firmware update is coming.

Hi, Just wondering has the Connect box any other apps

Could you get Youtube or facebook?

    thanks

Bought this box from eBay and working well. It is actually quite a good box and the connect interface is solid. It will be a powerful little machine when recording function is added. In fairness, if all u want to do is watch free TV this box is a solid buy. Really impressed with roll back feature on rte and tg4.

Used an amiko alien 2 triple tuner for last few years which was ok when not overloaded. Struggled to record two hd channels at same time and watch a third channel - crashed regularly resulting in need to reboot, affecting the recording facility. I would recommend the connect box and will only improve when record is added.

Nothing added yet but I can't see why Youtube and a few others won't be added.
It will be interesting to see if pay tv apps are added like rakuten tv, eir sports, etc.

Can you easily add more FTA channels to the list and re-arrange the list to suit user?

    Hi

All FTA channels are scanned in when u complete an automatic scan. U can then choose to hide as many channels as u like, e.g. scuzz, Sikh channel, etc. U can then rearrange the remaining channels in an order of ur liking really, e.g. BBC's, ITV's, channel4.

So there are more than 40, similar to any FTA UK channels on sky box. Unfortunately, EPG is only now and next and does not sync automatically. U have to open channel to get programs. Maybe they will change this with an update by implementing a crossepg download for this function. It all depends on how much u like TV really. If u only want the basics then the box is good. A bit slow on switching but I imagine this will improve.

Well if price isn't a problem and u don't mind paying monthly bills u are better off going with sky for all TV. However, u could use the saorview connect and use NowTV if u have good internet and BV want to access sky one and Atlantic channels. A bit cheaper than full package. If u want convenience and are not able to flash an image on a linux box, then stay with sky (or Eir/virgin).

Personally, I am already paying €160 euro with license fee and another €50 for internet so I ain't paying another monthly fee to watch repeats. I watch FTA channels and shows mainly. I have enough bills. Lol!

I already have Sky and a basic Virgin system so I was planning to get rid of both and with the money saved get a good Saorview box that I could use with my Sky Dish.

Well if u can work a Linux system u cud buy a triple tuner box - Vu, Amiko, Edition - and put a good image on it. U would need to buy a hard drive to record. The only thing about the Amiko alien 2 triple tuner is it crashed alot when recording on two hd channels. Given that most channels will switch over to hd over the coming years this will b a problem. However, the vu and edision boxes are three times the price of the Amiko box but more powerful so this recording issue probably doesn't exist. For me, TV is becoming redundant with internet so I don't see point in a powerful box anymore.

U will also need to get an aerial to receive saorview. U would need to check where Ur local rte transmitter is located. This will determine whether u will need an external aerial or whether u can put one in Ur attic. This will cost u another €50 plus installation u less u can do it urself (Irish channels on sky are through dish). I will lose hd version of TV3 using saorview also.

How do you know the connect box won't be overloaded too when it too tries to record two HD programs while watching a third ?

    Not a prayer.

Freesat are behind this box so they have localised it by not including the EPG they use on their UK boxes.

A genuine Freesat box has auto-update, full EPG for the UK channels, series link that works - you don't need to pad recording timers, if you are recording it'll suggest alternative times if there's a conflict or HD versions if recording in SD.

I believe the Connect box not only has series link for Saorview, but also has deeply integrated RTEPlayer, so for Irish TV it is quite good. For Satellite - not so good, just now and next.

They have yet to enable recording.

We will have to wait and see will this allow a series link for FTA UK channels. It will work for saorview but probably not UK channels unless the box can download UK EPG which appears unlikely based on info from more knowledgeable posters on this topic.

No it will not. There is no EPG for UK TV.
