I must say they when they announced they had some big interviews planned for their 5th birthday I was not expecting any of those. I literally have no interest in any of them. I was hoping they'd pull some strokes and get the likes of a Roy Keane or something but no... Vincent Browne! :D

Out of them all that is the one I am most interested in.

I was hoping they'd get Gary Kasparov :(

I remember they tried to get him on OTB but he wanted 50,000 Euro and it take place somewhere with an audience of 300 people and a nice comfortable chair, surely with all the Patreon money they'd be well able to afford him now :D

the football show really annoyed me yesterday, why have a guy in reviewing what sounded like a nonsense football book when there was a busy weekend of action just gone? Found it mildly entertaining but think it was badly timed
Also, font know how Ken kept saying Utd were lucky when the Liverpool goal was so lucky for Liverpool

Did Ken actually say that if Jose Mou was over west brom they would be in the same position? I’m not sure he did but I couldn’t make out what his point was.

Apart from that Alastair Campbell is someone I have no respect for but was surprised they threw in a book review on a Monday, that soundbed mixing Ken’s bicycle robbery and taxi driver is class.

Vincent Browne saying that Ferguson kicked a hairdryer at Beckham again today.

Must've been hard for the lads not to start laughing, unless it was ironic (which I don't think it was).

That if mourinho was at west brom using the same tactics, you wouldn't be looking at him as a manager that would be a candidate for a bigger club. Something like that I think.

The art of war bit was strange, ken saying its only a game. What's the point of the game? To win.
The idea that it should be something more/entertaining is nonsense.

I don't think the football pod is that good anymore, it's basically what ken thinks with too little input from others. though it probably always was that way.

I think you get a little fed up with every podcast after a while anyway. Need something different for a while.

First off I'll say that I enjoy second captains a lot. Listen to most of the pods but what annoys me about the football pods is they spend the first twenty minutes with Ken giving his take on Klopp or mourinho or pep and then they have a journalist on to talk about said manager for the next twenty minutes. What's the point in that. Also they spend way too much time fixated on either Utd Liverpool city or Chelsea. No problem with them talking a good bit about these clubs or whatever but give us more niche subjects. We are paid subscribers so you would imagine we are fairly knowledgable already on these clubs and would have interest in lesser known thing like stories in foreign countries. Like things in Seria A, La Liga etc and even the smaller leagues once there's an interesting story there.

They revealed some of the interviews that have coming up in the next few weeks.

Vincent Brown, Ken Loach, Paul Kimmage, Michael Cheika and Lynne Cox (swam the Bering Strait between the USA and Soviet Union).

Happy with this. Sort of what the posts above are saying I get a pain in my face hearing about managers. I love when they do different things like all of these interviews.

Really looking forward to The Player's Chair with Kimmage. (Assuming Richie remembers to record it).

    Spot on.

For a football podcast, the amount of actual football discussed is minimal. Even when the actual sport is discussed it always just circles back to a particular trait of the manager, such as Ken will always bring up the anecdote about Jose giving the speech about avoiding Ajax' midfield. It's just monotonous and repetitive.

Im not a big rugby fan but I enjoy the six nations, and if you compare the coverage of both sports, its night and day. The tactical discussions and observations about the actual sporting moments of the six nations games is very informative and well explained, there's literally nothing like this on the football pods.

Someone made the point recently on this thread that Ken is rarely challenged on the pod. The football pods these days are just Ken thinking out loud, complaining about different things he didn't like during the recent football matches, and pointing out the things managers said after the games. That just doesn't make for great content and hopefully they freshen it up a bit because its getting stale, fast.

Member led journalism. Might be worth sending your thoughts to them in an email. They may or may not read this thread but I'd imagine an email with your feedback (and feedback from others) is more likely to hit home to them. I'd imagine you'd get a response at least.

Try to be critical without being possible...

I’ve had issues with their content going back a while, thought about emailing them but didn’t for the following reasons-

Their subs numbers are good and growing

The people here don’t seem to share my issues, a very minority opinion like mine is largely pointless as customer feedback(that seems to have changed recently on this forum)

think in some cases they are unable to change their content because that’s their style. It would be like telling Eamon Dunphy he has to make sense in his opinions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,957 ✭✭✭Dots1982

There is also a possibility I feel recently that someone like Ken who is extremely bright is bored and has ran out of interesting things to say about football. The whole SC brand depends on him above everyone and I doubt he likes that.

That was funny, I laughed when Ken mentioned the hairdryer, couldn't believe Vincent repeated kicking it at Becks

Give them all a couple of days, check the reaction to each one on here. Sometimes a good interview subject turns out to be shíte, and a boring sounding one turns out to be good

I think the boys and particularly Ken were a bit taken aback by the value Vincent placed on sports journalism. They and other sports journalists seem to have a misplaced idea on the importance of sports and therefore sports journalism.

Did anyone feel that Ken was slightly antagonistic with Vincent Browne? Good interview though, well worth the listen...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,608 ✭✭✭jaykay74

I'II be skipping past Kens thoughts on Mourinho for similar reasons that I stopped listening to Johnny Giles on OTB. Its just repetition and all a bit pointless even if you agree with it.
It's the week of a Grand Slam decider in Twickenham, and we can be forgiven for getting excited. But we can also be forgiven for starting with Ken's thoughts on Man United's shameful exit from the Champions League at the hands of Sevilla last night.
Once Ken's gotten his "I told you so" off his chest, it's down to business....

    Fair enough.

I'll listen to it twice to make up for you.

The Vincent brown interview sounds the most interesting on paper.

Ken loach is a Leninist marxist so I’m sure he’ll be granted a platform to tell us how bad capitalism is while when his preferred political philosophy was in power it caused more economic failure, misery and inequality than any other and still does.

Kimmage and Sadlier are an odd match I don’t see working. But Kimmage has done long form interviews on OTB & The stand so he’s a media whore at this stage.

Would like an Irish politician to be on or someone who is in a prominent public role within Ireland. Anyway it might be good anyway.

    Yeah bad phrasing I accept

He has told his story on tv and radio so so many times I don’t what’s let to uncover. If Richie can then go luck to him but it’s kind of ....kimmage? Again? ...At this stage

I know it's a bit tiresome, but I thought Ken did a good job explaining why Mourinho is past it.

"Avoid the midfield lads, cos thats where all the **** congregate"

I thought that too, I don't mind him ranting about Mourinho when it's relevant it's when he show horns it in needlessly wrecks my head.

I wouldn't mind a special bonus pod for that Mourinho press conference
