I see what they're saying. Jesus, not exactly the least convoluted way of making that point - looked to me on first read that they were trying to put the blame on Android/Chromecast

I'd imagine there's a stinkypoo Apple ecosystem alive and stinking in RTE

The FreeTV shopping video shown on Facebook last night lasted for 33 minutes. It was basically just a giveaway on Saorview products with tickets for music gigs & the like. One of the Facebook comments I read from the video was funny though about how Kevin McGahern was dressed up. He was described as being Marty Whelan's lovechild. My god. I would never see them in the same way again after reading that. :D

I wonder if it got many views? It would be interesting to see if Saorview will give feedback on how this promotion worked out.

Hi, I have a Humax HDR for viewing UK channels via Freesat. It uses the same platform as the new soarview box.

Is there any hope that it will be possible to combine uk channels and Irish channels onto one box using this same platform.

(I know there are other workarounds but would like to have this platform as it has nice EPG, rollback, on demand features etc with Uk channels)

Having to have two boxes for uk and Ireland excessive

No. Both systems are closed source.
I have both boxes and am using a hdmi splitter with remote to switch between the 2 boxes.
It is not a bad solution especially if you have access to on demand on both.

Only problem I am having is that hdmi switches have an automatic switch detect in them so sometimes when using the remote the hdmi splitter switches to the other box. It never happens when viewing as long as both boxes are on (not just standby).

I am using the saorview connect remote to work both boxes. There are negatives like recordings sometimes get added on freesat box while scrolling on saorview guide. But I always just go in and delete them when I get chance. No recordings have been deleted yet.

The big issue is that either remote will control either box. Pluses and negatives for that.

As a marketing exercise, it would have been utterly pointless.

Exactly I'm sure if they had broadcast on Saorview a lot more people would have seen it but as usual the Saorview platform is continually been treated as a mickey mouse platform by the people who run the service. If they are not bothered promoting Saorview Connect on their own platform how do they expect people to know about the future technology they plan to use regarding Saorview Connect. As they say only in Ireland.

On the older Humax boxes you can use a code to change which remote works with it.

The other alternative is get three pieces of polaroid filter like out of an old calculator or broken lcd display , put a piece on the remote, and on the PVRs have one with a vertical and the other horizontal. You just tilt the remote to operate the other box. The bad side is it reduces the range.

I've an ancient Humax Foxsat and sometimes it's easier to use the web interface than the remote. :o

Any new information on this box? How is it working on the look back function?

The look back function is very handy. TG4 rollback is due shortly.

I invested in a new LG tv as the hdmi splitter auto switching sources was a pain.

I programmed the connect remote to the tv and I now have 1 remote operating everything.

I press the 'av' button on the connect remote and a couple of clicks and I can switch seamlessly between my freesat and connect box. Very happy with it so far.

I have also labelled the hdmi inputs on my tv so when a person presses the 'av' button a choice comes up
    Freesat hdmi 1
    Saorview hdmi 2
    Chromecast hdmi 3.

I used the Rakuten app on the freesat box at the weekend. It allows you to rent films for 2 nights for about €3/4. Handy as I found Netflix has a poor enough choice of past films. I would only use this maybe once a month so it is handy.

The LG tv also has the rte player app. I can see why people get frustrated!

How does the RTE Player compare between the LG version and the Connect look back version?

    Is it swamped with ads?

    Is it swamped with ads?

There are still ads but it is not too bad as you can see how much time is left to start of programme. It has crashed about 2 or 3 times since I got it so it is a huge improvement on existing apps. It has the same look.

Sometimes an ad break in the live programme is not included in the rollback so less ad breaks.

I find it very handy not to have to type in names of programmes in the rte player itself as scrolling the keypad is slow.

In truth if you don't watch the catchup of a programme within a few days you probably won't watch it.

I hope the player is expanded so that old good documentary series are put up on it. Rte has a load of old material that would be handy to watch in boxset form.

Edit: just did a rollback there to view Eco Eye. A 35 sec ad before the programme started. Sometimes it is a minute and a half so not sure why a difference is there.

I wonder will we see TV3 launch its player on the Connect box?
Will the commercial reality and loss of revenue by not launching force their hand?

I see Channel 4's All4 player has been very successful so can TV3 pass up on the potential ad revenue?

Given that the satellite section of the box won't offer easy series link it would make sense for viewers to be able to catch up on soaps on the tv3 player.

    ....
    Record breaking All 4 success

All 4 enjoyed record-breaking success in October attracting the biggest number of monthly views ever* and, following the launch of its latest individually personalised homepage, is experiencing robust year-on-year viewing growth of +14% year-to-date with a total of 557 million views. The trend to watch on-demand on TV sets continues to soar with views up +24% compared to last year.

This performance is driven by titles including 2018 smash hit The Great British Bake Off which has amassed almost 15 million views to date, as well as Celebs Go Dating, First Dates, Hollyoaks, The End of the F***ing World, The Handmaid’s Tale, Gogglebox, The Undateables, Catastrophe, No Offence, 24 Hours in A&E, Ackley Bridge , Made in Chelsea and Channel 4 favourites such as Shameless, The Inbetweeners , Skins and Peep Show.
    ......

There is also the big issue of being able to target ads at certain age/gender/interest sectors, something that C4 is pushing in a big way.

A couple of photos of the rollback guide and of the TG4 player.

There also seems to be a blank app space next to rte and tg4 players, so perhaps another player on the way.

More to the point did they enable the recording function and the third tuner!

Channel 4 has a very different outlook to TV3. Being publicly owned, it's almost duty bound to make its content as widely available as possible.

TV3 is privately owned by a company who are actively trying to get as many people as possible to sign up to their pay-TV platform. There's no reason for them to support Connect, exactly the opposite in fact.

At this point, and barring an explosion in the number of Connect boxes, the lost ad revenue from boycotting it would be negligible.

Channel 4 still took their HD service from Freesat (not duty bound there!.....though suggestions online that they may be looking to be on a higher epg).

5/600,000 people use Saorview I think. Do 2/300,000 use virgin media? The numbers won't stack up for tv3.

It also likely that tv3 won't be able to bid in the future for sports rights unless they broadcast in hd. They are going against the tide.

There is huge growth with on demand/catch up content and tv3 will have to bite the bullet at some stage.

Virgin Media are losing a huge amount of tv customers and that will only increase once better broadband options become available to people.

From what I understand, there is no third tuner. The box contains two tuners, both capable of receiving satellite and Saorview under software control. The reason for no recording is that the software is still under development/testing.

When the recording is enabled by a software upgrade, series link will appear as if by magic. However, since the satellite has only now and next, it will only apply to Saorview.

Will the Saorview connect update later on this year for the external recoding mean that TVs with an external PVR be able to series link?

I would not expect it. With Saorview the only thing to expect is disappointment.

And that's a fact, from 2010 to the present day not a whole lot has happened, picture quality should be improved at least, given all the spare capacity they have. I'm taking no interest in Saorview Connect as I don't want to be disappointed any further.

I simply do not believe this Sam. There is clearly a third tuner on the back of the box. There are no hybrid NIMS commercially available that are hybrid DVB-S/T. There are hybrid DVB-C/T but the reason for that is obvious.

In the pics I have seen the third tuner is labelled Sat IN 2 and has an F connector.

Sat 1 and Sat 2 connect to the tuners, as is necessary for LNB function. The DVB-T connection is shared between the two tuners, as is possible.

That is what I have been told. I have yet to look inside one though - but check this out.

Not sure what you are asking here.
I don't think a tv can use pvr if a set top box is connected to it. The stb would have to have the pvr functionality.

    I could be wrong though.

The software for PVR is licenced, so if the TV producer pays the fee, gets it approved, then it will work. I doubt any TV producers have paid for PVR so it is unlikely that your TV will suddenly become a PVR.

The only currently licenced PVR is the Walker STB. Not sure it is still available.

Yes I had checked that out previously Sam. The blurb about multiformat tuners is nonsense. What they are saying is that they have installed a few NIMs. These NIMS are multiformat in that there are 2 that cover SAT and one that covers DVB-T. The extra NIM installed will not cover every frequency band for DVB-T and DVB-S2 and be switchable through software. There is no such commercial invention or implemetation that has both frequency bands on the one module.

The only Hybrid NIM is the DVB-T/T2/C/C2 one.

Sorry, probably getting naming conventions mixed up. Currently I can use my TV to record any Saorview channel to an external harddrive however there is no series link functionality. However I seen for the same TV there is series link available for the UK version of Saorview. So just wondering if the Saorview update later on this year will mean I can series link my favourite programmes?

    Cheers
