That is not our problem. WE had to resort to using a KA Beam that barely covers the country and it still wasnt enough. We even had to blank certain programming on the NI Minimux.

If the freesat consortium are witholding the epg data whilst ignoring the rights infringements/swamp broadcasting then I would say they have their proirities arseways.

Oh yeah, sorry maybe I should have been clearer - I totally agree with you. I was just stating that they will never manage to get a tighter beam that excludes us, which as you say - isn't our problem.

What galls me is that Sky are allowed to 'sell' some of the freesat groups channels that are on this 'overspill' So not only are we not allowed to officially license the data, Sky can sell it and everything's a-ok there.

Is the elephant in the room, satellite encryption with cards tied to a valid UK tv licence?

The elephant in the room is the encroachment by broadcasters who are members of the freesat consortium into Ireland who expect us to ignore that but dont want to give up the epg data for commercial reasons as that must stay within their borders!

Dont get me wrong, I am all for more choice, but Freesat need to be told that, especially when they were engaged as the successful tenderer and software implementation solution for the Saorview Connect boxes.

@ Schorpio. Sky use their own EPG solution called openepg which is whats succesfully downloaded by E2 boxes off the Sky Openepg Transponder.

    I decided to invest in a freesat box - humax 1100s 500gb.

First interesting thing is that the saorview connect remote works with the freesat box and vice versa.

I have set up a 5 input hdmi splitter with my tv.
The 1 remote will turn off both boxes at the same time. So now I just have 2 remotes - the hdmi splitter remote and the saorview remote.

To help the family I have attached a piece of paper (selloptaped over) to hdmi remote with following
    1. Saorview
    2. Sat
    3. Chromecast
    4. Dvd
    5. Xbox/ps4/whatever you have.

So now I can quickly switch between saorview and sat by pressing 1 button on the hdmi remote.

Tigerandahalf which Freesat box did you get and is the remote the generic Metaphor remote used by Saorview? If it is that would explain why the remotes control both boxes! I’m sure it would be very annoying

    The freesat remote

    And the saorview remote

Note how the freesat remote has a 'tv' and a 'stb' button to switch between the 2 but the saorview one has just the 'tv' one. Not sure how one switches back to stb after changing to tv mode.

Is the TV button just to turn the TV on and off? It's got the power symbol on it.

It says on the user guide it will allow you to turn on/off the tv and adjust the volume. But I found I couldn't revert to the connect box as there isn't a button to do so. I presume there must be a shortcut somewhere.

If you click on the av button it seems to give access to hdmi source but it is not mentioned in the manual.

I have a Humax HDR1000s (I think that is the model) and a Samsung TV. To get the Freesat remote to change the TV AV function to move from TV to HDMI, it uses the [Pause] symbol when in TV mode. [Very odd - and not covered in the Humax manual] . Another oddity is that the Samsung remote (while the TV is connected to the Humax) will revert the TV back to Saorview if the channel is changed on the Samsung remote. Other TVs have most of the functions disabled when connected to the HDMI.

It is one thing I wish the EU had got involved in - determining a standard layout for remotes. [Numbers at the top, power off on the left, etc. - that kind of thing]

Just watching the Late Late Show on the rollback - good news is that you can fast forward when watching. Maybe not during the ads but very handy to skip a crap segment.

What is the difference between 'Rollback' and RTE Player?

What is the difference between 'Rollback' and RTE Player?

Rollback is part of the tv guide.
When you click 'guide' today's programmes come up.
You then have the option to scroll left to 'earlier'.
This shows a screen with a list of programmes on earlier/yesterday..etc back to 7 days previous. On the right side you select either rte1, rte2 or rte+1 (not sure why that is there) to show the list of programmes for that channel.
    TG4 will come soon supposedly.

The rte player itself is in the 'On Demand' button section. I find it cumbersome enough to use.
The rollback is good for me so far.

Does the rollback function launch the RTE Player when you select what you want to watch?

It shows 'rte player' graphic with a loading bar under which takes a few secs to load.
Then 1 minute of ads before programme starts.

Pressing the 'exit' button brings you back to live tv.

It’s a hybrid Free TV service from RTÉ.

Basically that means the box has apps for on demand content (only RTÉ player at the moment) that allow you to scroll back through the guide for up to 7 days.

The current box (note only box) on the market will not support DVR features until 2018 but it does have a Satellite tuner

I'd doubt it, TV3 seem to have no input in the box at all.

New software update coming this week that will have a channel list for the satellite channels. It will have nearly 50 channels ready to go on it.

Did that update come through and if so, any improvements to report?

I think there is a very good chance it will. As i understand it, Saorview are/ will be talking to others including eir. whether anything comes of it we will have to wait and see.

TV3 are owned by Virgin whose transmission service is in direct competition with Saorview and whose catch-up and rollback service is in direct competition with Connect.

    They won't be joining.

Not sure as I am using freesat humax now for satellite.

I was reading an interview by the Virgin Media head in Ireland. They have lost a lot of tv subscribers from 70% of their broadband users to 30%. Talk of them producing more of their own content as part of the Liberty Group.

I do wonder if they pulled tv3 from saorview and only offered it on virgin packages how would it work out.

I guess they wouldn't get certain sports rights then.

Which would be fine if they could actually offer their service to every household in the country - but they don't come close. They are nowhere outside urban centers. Not that they care!

They'd lose their PSB status anyway. Which would preclude them from any FTA listed sport.

Ya I think with the 6 nations coming up next year and their coverage in SD they will lose a lot of viewers to bbc (no ads) and itv with Full HD pictures. I'd imagine their coverage will be riddled with ads and will start about 2hrs before the game!

When are TG4 going HD? I thought it was in the pipeline?

    Y

When are TG4 going HD? I thought it was in the pipeline?

There are a few threads about it. This was posted in August, by someone who enquired.

    A chara
Our discussions with Saorview regarding HD carriage are ongoing. You will appreciate that these are commercial negotiations and that the "availability" of any service is subject to mutually acceptable terms for the parties involved.

I cannot, at this stage surmise when our negotiations might conclude but it is our wish too that we have HD versions of our service available on all platforms, including Saorview.
