Rpgamer have their 2017 best of up.

    https://www.rpgamer.com/awards/2017/

Not the most surprising of lists.

One massive ommission is Tokyo xanadu. They mentioned the insanely good Zwei in the overlooked games but think Tokyo xanadu deserves a shout and it a much better arpg than ever oasis.

Also surprised by how highly horizon ranked. It definitely surprised me with how good it was considering the developer but I think zelda really made it look old hat.

New announcement from NISA, looks like it going to be a dungeon crawler, it is getting a Switch and PS4 release later this year.

Playing xenoblade 2 on the switch, I must say I'm really enjoying it, the battle system is very cool once you get the hang of it.

Interested in Coven, it feel like tis been an awful long time since NIS have done a good non-Disgaea rpg and apparently this was well received for a DRPG.

Giving it 3rd place for most original is amazing, it's the most cookie cutter game I've ever seen that wasnt made by ubisoft

Anyone playing Grand Kingdom since it was free on PS+?

Anyone recommend me anything for the ps4?

Haven't played a JRPG for quite a while. Had a ha meringue for something like FF9 or DQ8 (which I admit is setting the bar high).

Persona 5 is on the list but anything more traditional?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,261 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Ni No Kuni 2 is out soon. First game is hot garbage so I'm taking a wait and see approach but critics I trust are saying it's a lot better than the first.

For turn based stuff there's not an awful lot but if you want Action RPGs you have Ys VIII and Tokyo Xanadu which are fantastic, contenders for best in the genre.

World of final Fantasy maybe if you're looking for something turned based, otherwise I'd agree with retro and go Tokyo Xanadu or Ys VIII.

Anyone playing Radiant Historia? Don't really have enough time for it with Xenoblade 2 and Trails of Cold Steel on the go, but it looks so good.

No but there's meant to be a pretty meaty demo on the e-shop. The original seemed to be well received.

Actually I'd second world of final fantasy. It sold terribly so is very cheap now but it really got unfairly ignored as it's fantastic.

I would add Tales Of Berseria as well, very underrated.

I have not started it yet, but I loved the original on the DS, nothing I could really fault about, one of my favorite soundtracks as well in a game.

    Cheers gents.

I found persona in argos for 30euro today, seemed to be sold out in most places?

World of final fantasy is a good shout.

Haven't actually played 15 yet tbh, still scarred by 13.

Retro, whilst I agree Ni No was overrated I really think "hot garbage" is hyperbole!

Btw if anyone is looking for a reasonable price for Ni No Kuni 2 it is available for preorder in Smyths for €45, €25 less than GameStop.

Cheers for that. Intrigued by the review scores.

    Must take a look.

    Never played a tales game.

  • I finished Persona 5 last night. Honestly it felt like the game that would never end at that point. I had an amazing time with it up until about October but from then on I think it had some serious pacing issues. But obviously as I finished it I thought there was enough there to keep going. 8/10 for me and had potential to be higher if they'd streamlined things a bit more.

Have Xenoblade 2 on the go and might start Tales of Berseria soon too.

The Shining series is coming back west across all consoles and PC this summer, I do not think I have played an entry since Shining Force 2 which was probably my first real experience of a RPG.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,261 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Meh. The series has been a total mess ever since Camelot left the development after shining force 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 591 ✭✭✭Sieghardt

Seeing how much sega got it right with Valkyria 4 and really came back with a true sequel, it'd be amazing to see Shining Force 4 do the same.

Sadly I think they only intend to churn out more Tony Taka sameface garbage

So regarding Valkyria Chronicles 4, just reading up on it and happy with the new angle on the story.

Has anyone played the third game?

I believe someone was working on a fan patch at some stage? How is it compared to two? (which I personally enjoyed even if to a lesser extent than 1).

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,261 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Not personally played it but heard it's a turbo charged version of the game play in 2 but with a story that is actually good instead of mgs4 levels of garbage.

The fan translation is out and translates everything fir the main story but some side content isn't complete.... although it was years since I paid attention so that might have changed

    MGS4 isn't garbage.
    It's art.

Good art is pretentious, right? :pac:

Valkyria 4 demo on japanese psn

it's even better than I hoped, really interesting unique missions with big maps, doing the two story missions it feels like it's back to VC1 quality or slightly better

then you unlock an extra 3rd mission from later in the game and it's crazy, sprinting through roofed areas to avoid mortar interception, hugging walls to avoid fire from enemies with the high ground, it really takes things to a new level
