Not taking away from Jimmy as I think the kid has great talent but you would be naive to think the 49ers are using their full playbook for him. They are using a trimmed down version because there is no QB in the NFL that can walk into a team with very little time and pick up a playbook that quick. And I extend that to all of the elite QBs they couldn't do it either. 49ers would have given him a sample of the playbook and played to his strengths.

Definitely a trimmed down playbook but that makes it even more impressive that he performed so well. It is why I disagree with the argument that it'll be more difficult for him next year as 'teams will have tape of him' because as of now they haven't seen most of what he'll be working with.

Reports coming out from Chicago are saying the Bears are close to hiring Chiefs OC Matt Nagy as their new Head Coach

Happy with that. Andy Reid was full of praise for him and he has had many successful assistants go on to be good HCs. Apparently Nagy & Trubisky are already BFFs since Nagy worked with him in the lead up to the draft and they have been talking by text all season.

    Hopefully Fangio can be kept.

Very excited bears fan on espn there to talk about our new coach - https://streamable.com/nm1ma

I wanted him or DeFillipo from the Eagles, so happy enough if this is true. Would also like if we could hold on to Fangio, is he interviewing anywhere else for HC? I know there was a request to interview him as aDC somewhere and the bears refused because he's still under contract till tomorrow, which implied they wanted to get a deal done involving him before then.

With coaching news in mind, the Lions look almost certain to hire Matt Patricia to be their next head coach, once the Patriots are done with the post-season. Happy enough with that. Certainly more preferable than Vrabel.

Teryl Austin definitely won't be in charge of the Lions defence next season, as the Bengals are due to announce him as their new DC. Can't say I'll miss him that much. Was absolutely atrocious the last two years, particularly 2016.

If it is, they deserve a fan revolt.

I think that’s a bit harsh on Austin, he’s been great for the dbs and the talent in the front 7 the last two years has been woefully lacking. Think Patricia will absolutely be better but Austin generally did alright given what he had to work with. When he had talent on the d line he created an excellent defence.

The D may have been lacking playmakers, but they were dead last in DVOA in 2016 & gave up historically bad completion percentage too. When you give the opposing receivers 10 yards cushion on 3rd and short, a team can dink and dunk all the way down the field for a score.
Even this year, the amount of times teams were able to score near the goal line with a play action pass to a TE was embarrassing. Surely you devise a way at some point in the season to defend against such situations.

It's not hard to have an excellent D with what he inherited in 2014.

Mike Pettine seems to be another name that keeps coming up

I watched the film concussion on Netflix last night which is about mike Webster and the realisation about CTE. I don't know if it meant to but it really made the NFL out to be horrible bastards altogether. I can see why the NFL weren't thst trilled about it. I have watched Mike Webster's rambling HOF speech in which he is clearly not well.

From the Bears presser introducing Matt Nagy as HC the Fangio situation is still in limbo.

As long as it's not in Lambeau...

That's the word alright regarding Bradley (but you never know with these things). But you'd really rather Pettine than Fangio? Based on what?

Perhaps, but this came out an hour ago: Packers ask permission to speak to Bradley.

I hope its fangio or Bradley. Pettine is out of work for 2 years and is apparently a disruptive individual

That Raiders press conference to announce Gruden being back was fascinating. If I was an Oakland/future Las Vegas Raider fan I'd be excited.

I know why he's getting all the love but when you look at his actual record, is he really as good as he's made out to be?

    http://thebiglead.com/2018/01/03/jon-gruden-track-record-head-coach/

Did they go into details of his salary or is it a straight $10m a year for 10 years? I presume there's a get out clause somewhere in there as what happens if it all goes belly up after, let's say 3 years? Are they going to be on the hook for $70m?

Both Gruden and Davis refused to comment on it, so it's better to assume what was the reported deal on $10M per year.

He's getting the love because for the last few years he doesn't have an actual win/loss record. As they say in the media you always win.

One big concern of mine with Gruden would be the Joe Gibbs factor - coming back after a long time off to show the game may have passed you by. Could prove absolutely nothing, but it's one to keep an eye on.

Yeah hadn't thought of that. But Joe Gibbs and John Gruden are very different. I mean Gruden does the college QB things so even if he wasn't on the field he seemed to be keeping up to date with the game.

And from watching the Joe Gibbs 'A Football Life', it looks like he was totally separated from football in the years between his two stints. I'd image running a NASCAR team is equally as time consuming as running a football team.

I know Gruden has won a Superbowl but I was never really sold on him as a HC.
It'll be interesting to see how it works out. I like the man and hope he does well but I'm not expecting to see the Raiders back on too anytime soon.

Gus Bradley staying with the Chargers, and Darrell Bevell out as OC in Seattle, both according to PFT. Schefter reporting that Pettine to the Packers is almost done.

a few other reasons why I think he would be fine with the break is that as part of his commentary, they go to the home team prior to the game for interviews and to see their training complex, and I'm sure he sees public training sessions too of those sides.

He also has a brother who is a head coach, I'm sure he has been in regular contact with him and is very much up to speed on that side of things.

whether or not he is a good head coach or not is a different thing, but I dont think the break from the game to commentate on the game will be a factor whatsoever in any deficiency on his part.

I see what you mean, just think Fangio has an amazing track record. I could deal with him leaving the Bears but if he goes to Green Bay too kick Trubiskys ass twice a year in perpetuity I couldn't be dealing with it.
