TG4 maybe available but the box won’t remember a manual IP address

RTÉ Player keeps crashing now also.... Great waste of €200 - next software update better get more QA testing before release!

that's crazy talk, who'd want to use a fixed IP for a box that's going be there for years. ?

If you have a good router you could assign it a static lease but you shouldn't have to.

Due to the way I’ve my home network setup and the fact that RTÉ Player wouldn’t load a video at all using DHCP using this setup, it was a necessity to set a manual DNS server on the Saorview Connect box in order to load RTÉ Player, which worked OK up until version 0.10.17 (was version 0.10.4).

[P.S. there isn’t an option on the box to set a Manual DNS without setting a Manual IP]

Just to note TG4 player works perfectly OK so it’s just buggy software on RTÉs part. It’s obviously been rushed to market and not tested properly.

Bugs Include but are not limited too
-- Software crash when trying to play from roll back
-- Software crashes after playing first ad during the first "break"
-- Channel Numbers are not recognised in Satellite mode after update
-- Manual IP configuration is lost after reboot

I have had some of those issues.
I think a lot of the issues with the rte player are legacy issues. There has been a problem with the rte player for a long time where the ads finish playing but then no content plays with just a blank dark screen.

TG4 still don't have the Sunday rugby games up yet. I have tried to contact them but no luck!

I'd love to access some of the old documentary series on tg4.

The freesat box is great the way it saves series like Blue Planet and Match of the Day into box sets that are easy to access.

I was on the TG4 player the other night and it is funny how you would come across programmes that you wouldn't otherwise watch.

This programme called Opry Dhoire was a highlighted programme - singing duets with Una Healy and Daniel O'Donnell and some other country singers. But the real highlight was himself singing 'The Homes of Donegal' with Moya Brennan singing and on harp while her daughter played the guitar. She has an incredible voice and it is well worth watching.

No ads on tg4 player from what I've watched but I am sure that will change in time. Hopefully they will follow the approach of Channel 4's All4 app where there is only a 30 sec ad at the beginning.

    http://www.adworld.ie/2017/04/28/rte-deliver-new-version-player-year-end/

Going by the above article posted in another thread it looks like the new rte player will allow you to watch programmes from the start if you switch to them some minutes in. Obviously that means you will be streaming.

A nice feature that is already on the bbc channels on the freesat box.

But with the ads on the player you might be an additional 20 minutes behind before the live broadcast ends, you won't have that problem on the BBC iPlayer as there's no ads :pac:

Has anybody tried this box with Freeview (Terrestrial) channels

Is it locked to just Saorview?

    Thanks

If they added €70 to the price and used that extra money to buy up all the existing Walker PVR stock around the country to take off the market it just might be a success.

No stock anywhere of the existing Walker PVR box, did they follow my advice? :D

Heads up for anyone interested in nature docs.

Éire Fhiáin (Wild Ireland) is on the tg4 player at the moment.
To get substitles when the programme starts press ok and then scroll right to 'subs on/off'.

The roll back guide for some reason doesn't show up last night's late late show. You have to go into the player itself.

Don't get me started on TG4 only being transmitted in SD.

It was nice watching it in HD on BBC2 NI
For those in the UK you can see it on http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08jgr5r

Not that I noticed on the player.

    Another bloody box!

Can't the good people at RTE not just release apps for connected TVs such as Nvidia Shield Android TV etc to let people use their existing, high quality and costly hardware without making it a 'buy another crappy box' (and yes, it is a crappy box, I've tried it) option.

We licence payers want access to RTE Player on Chromecast (from android) and Android TV. Why should I as a licence payer have to buy another box, subscribe to Virgin or Sky etc to watch on demand.

Can't they look across the Irish sea to see how easy it is to watch on demand content for our UK neighbors.

Saorview launches the first free tv shopping channel promoting Saorview Connect. It is an online only pop up channel which can be viewed on their Facebook page and will offer people who log on to their Facebook page to watch free tv a chance to win some fantastic prizes. More information here. https://www.saorview.ie/en/news

Just got an email from Saorview about it too. Odd marketing choice for them. Maybe there are people who would tune in to watch this online but I couldn’t see it generating a lot of business. I’d be more interested if they sorted the HDD recording and offered a usable functional product.

So they are trying to promote new saorview services but not using the saorview platform to promote them.

With all the capacity available I thought they could have least simulcast the promotion on one of the extra LCN's or on News Now. Who knows if this promotion gets lots of views and there's a good take up of Saorview Connect Boxes after it we might see the first shopping channel aimed at an Irish audience launch on Saorview.

    Hi Seapoint,

Thank you for getting in touch with RTÉ Player.

At present, Chromecast is not available on Android devices. We plan to make this available in the near future with a future release of the app for Android users. Unfortunately though, I am unable to provide you with a timeline.

In the meantime, for further tips on how to get the best from RTÉ Player, please take a look at our FAQs section: http://www.rte.ie/player/assets/watch/

We will keep users updated in regards to new apps and services on the RTÉ.ie homepage and through our twitter and facebook pages.

    Best wishes,

    RTÉ Player Team

Reply from me, also sent to richard.waghorn@rte.ie

At this stage I have decompiled the app and am in the process of adding cast support.
When I have finished that I will add Android TV functionality.
I look forward to having to do something similar for the SaorviewConnect platform.

Honestly I don't wonder why people resort to piracy, it's easier to consume on a high quality platform.

A roadmap would help in order to prevent me from expending time and energies on this endeavor should a new app release be imminent.

    Is mise le meas

I have a fair bit of android dev experience.. but I don't have much time to help in that regard at the moment.. happy to help test though including on Android TV (Xiaomi Mi Box). I also have a cúpla chromecasts.

I have been using the Saorview Connect for a while.

It badly needs user log in so if you accidently leave the player you can resume watching from where you left off.

It is great to scroll back and watch programmes you have just missed.
But they do need to put up programmes as soon as they broadcast.

Another issue is that programmes like the Late Late aren't in the rollback just the on demand section. Perhaps it is to do with rte putting the show into the different interview segments.

TG4 are still very slow to put up the rugby highlights. Perhaps it is a rights issue meaning they can't put up highlights for a few days.
By that stage you no longer want to watch them.

Overall though it is a great facility.

To be honest, I got the aok decompiled, dropped it in to eclipse, exported Gradle project but I can't build the Gradle project correctly. A little help doing this would be great please.

RTE Player has cast functionality built in to the iOS app but not the Android app.

    Tell your Shield that

I see what they're saying. Jesus, not exactly the least convoluted way of making that point - looked to me on first read that they were trying to put the blame on Android/Chromecast
