Course not, please don't be so cynical. He has a gig in Dublin at the weekend, ticket sales are stagnant and he needs to plug it big time.

How many texts will he read out asking for Christy songs to which he will very humbly reply that it’s just not his place to do it at all, as much as he is burning inside to play the whole lot of them? The spread is set at 5.

He actually played two whole records before he announced his tour dates tonight. He's slipping up.

He must have gotten distracted writing out his guest lists.

Anyone know what has actually happened to Cathal Murray .

On his last show on Thursday 23th November he said he would be back the following Sunday

She’s back and very fittingly kicks off with Beatles “Glad all Over” which neatly sums up how some of us are feeling right now.

Are you sure it's not the Dave Clark Five? Does sound a bit like the Beatles but Im pretty certain it's DC5.

Sure you’re right. The Beatles track came after.

Aengous said last night that he'll see us on Christmas night so hopefully we're safe for a few weeks. He produced Duffy today though so he's still lurking around.

The likeable Shay Byrne will be holding the fort Xmas eve, I believe, though not sure if it’s a standard LD or a different format entirely.

Bloody Des "immersion" Bishop is doing late date a few days after christmas according to the christmas rte guide

According to the RTE Guide Shay is doing the "Ronan Collins" 11 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. slot on Christmas Eve and there will be no LD that night - straight to RTE Gold at midnight :-(

My mistake. Heard him mention that he’d be on from 11 Xmas eve and automatically assumed he was talking about the night slot! I like Shay but there are times his persistent chirpiness makes me cringe a bit.

Will give him a chance anyway. Any other guest presenters touted?

I'm tempted to wait until Aonghus is on again and request one of the following songs or something along similar (hair)lines:

    Bald by The Darkness

Bald Headed Woman by The Who

    Hair by Little Mix

I Think I'm Going Bald by Rush

She's Going Bald by The Beach Boys

    Anything from "Hair"

Think of it as retaliation for plugging his awful Christy Hennessy "trubite" show. I didn't even like Christy Hennessy's songs, God rest him...but he doesn't deserve to have them abused by Angus Macanulty...

Guys, I know it's 2:30 and past Late Date time, but WTF is going on at the moment?
It seems to be some kind of a modern day War Of The Worlds.
It's a girl reading a very long prose piece. Very interesting but doesn't seem to be something that Gold would normally be playing. I've stayed listening for over twenty minutes just in case it was some obscure rap I hadn't known, but no, it seems to be some sort of performance piece.
Did I miss an announcement somewhere?

Edit: it was a repeat of a Drama On One play by Penny Arcade. Strange time for it but a definite improvement on Duffy/D'Arcy repeats.

Don’t know who this guest presenter is on LD tonight but she has just made RTÉ radio history tonight by playing a John Martyn song that isn’t May You Never or Sweet Little Mystery! I like her.

Edit: it’s Francis black I think. Music is good.

Didn't like her, she sounded half asleep in her delivery and played some very ropey stuff (the Peter McVerry charity single, Doris Day, Raglan Road, Gabrielle???) I wasn't a fan and hope she won't be back. Only caught the end of Des Bishop the other night but he wasn't the worst.

I listened to the first few songs last night. One by James Taylor which she seemed to think was great. I never heard it before and hopefully never will again. Switched off then.

She was worse than Lillian Smith who is obsessed with playing requests for every Tom, Dick and Harry.

A twin spin from JM tonight on Cathal's late date....Take a guess which of the 2 JM songs above were not played?

I have faith in Cathal so I’ll go with wishful thinking and guess he played neither. MYN is the JM default tune so its probably stretching credulity to think he didn’t play that.

He played May You Never as one of the 2 John Martyn tracks !!

I wonder who will play it next on Radio 1 ...John Creedon, Fiachna and more importantly when !!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,248 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Ronan played a JM track earlier but it wasn't one of the old reliables.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

As a casual radio listener throughout the schedule I find it noticeable how often tracks are repeated across various programmes. This is partly due to the births/deaths anniversary reliance that is way overdone to my mind.

Maybe presenters don’t check playlists or even care what they’re colleagues are playing, but just feels a bit lazy when tracks get repeated or become too familiar, as so obviously with May You Never.

I don't do Facebook so would appreciate if somebody could check this out and post a link or something.
Fíachna said tonight that Alf has a feature on his Facebook page called 'Later With Alf'. I don't know if it's just posts or a podcast or what. I'd love to find out though.

It appears to be two podcasts.... haven't tuned in, and being the luddite I am I can't figure out how to link straight to them. But here's a screenshot that might help..... otherwise someone more tecchie might help.

Anyway, podcasts are on mixcloud.com if thats any help.

ETAA here's a link  (far too early for this sort of stuff!) https://m.mixcloud.com/alfiemac/later-with-alf-2/

Cheers Heidi. Listened to the first one. Same old Alf. Music I'd forgotten about and the bit of comedy. A bit of a risque interview with Earl Okin.
Something to keep me going between Creedon and Late Date.
He's just announced that the third installment is up now.
