Ah Jim Lockhart playing a stormer on Late Date tonight and then he goes and plays a request for ......Elbow One day Like this...ugh!!
But seriously, good to hear him again, dont think he's been on for a while or else I've missed it. Always does a solid job and I've yet to hear him give a shameless plug for his own band who actually deserve a ton more airplay than they get nowadays.

I've had to turn off Late Date, it's shockingly bad tonight :(

The chances of the wooly jumper onslaught is nigh in the short term. Lilian has been tied up at the other end of the day. She was on Rising Time this weekend and mentioned that she'll be on the weekday show for a week of October. If RTE could archive some of the old Val Joyce shows for us, it would go a long way to ease the pain :)

    Or bring back Carol.

Lillian has been doing The Weekend On One for a number of months now, allowing for some breaks in between. I don't think we're going to be hearing her on Late Date for the foreseeable, sadly. I'm not really listening to Late Date as much as I used to now. I'd love to hear Alf back on the show as well. However, Cathal and Fiachna have both been doing a grand job.

There's a real blast from the past on LD tonight....The Passions I'm in Love with a German film star. The perfect pop song, must be 30 years since i last heard it. Black mark for Cathal for failing to mention (or not knowing) that the bands lead singer (Claire Gogan?) was the niece, or some relation anyway, of one Larry Gogan.

John Creedon actually played it two weeks ago :)

I can't take to the former. I never heard the latter!

Ha, not the first time this has been said here. Sweet Little Mystery is a truly beautiful song, but RTE have beaten it to within an inch of its sorry existence. I remember Marty Whelan flogging it incessantly between Hall & Oates and Steely Dan standards, and that's going back more than 30 years ago! May You Never is a good song too, but they have categorically murdered it for me. I actually think I might hate it now.

ya both good songs but the music shows on R1 play both far too much

computer playouts and the too easy access to 1000's of songs is partly to blame too !

We got The Rose (lots of people enjoyed it of course) and Hot House Flowers live gig plug tonight. Business as usual on weekend Late Date.

    Carol back tonight tg.
It's actually a good day for female presenters. At least eight programmes on R1 today are anchored by women.

Some lovely tunes from Ruth Smith tonight. Fíachna would want to look out.
Then again it's RTE so he won't need to worry.

Who's Sheila Dempsey? She's doing tomorrow night apparently.

    A producer I think.

why cant they have established voices doing the show, apart from the current ones?

No idea who this guy is doing Late Date tonight but has the oddest delivery i've heard for a presenter, pauses at least 3 times every sentence, like he's reading out the lotto numbers or something. Must be some sort of campaign out in Montrose mansions to give anybody who wants it a spin on the Late Date carousel.

Niall O'Sioradain according to the RTE website

Sheila Dempsey again this weekend. Missed her last time around.

It’s not a true Aonghus McNally Late Date until he gives his Christy Hennessy show the obligatory plug and then follows it by wishing Fiachna a happy birthday and playing the Flowers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,096 ✭✭✭Red Fred

F.O.B. on tonight, Aonghus the past few nights. Will RTE ever have a consistent roster of presenters for Late Date or will it just be whoever is free and fancies doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

    Late Date Mon-Fri Cathay Murray
    Sat-Sun Lillian Smith

1st sub Jim Lockhart 2nd sub Carol Moran; assorted various occasional guest presenters

    Life bans: F O Braionain, A McNally, J Brolly

    It’s not rocket science.

Fiachna told us last Friday that he was off to Skegness to play at a folk festival. I swear to God, him and Aengus are one step away from ringing in their Late Date shows live from their backstage parties.

I noticed Sheila had a producer in tow last night as well.
Don't the 'full time' presenters produce their own shows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,096 ✭✭✭Red Fred

Aonghus is on tonight and tomorrow night. It really is like RTE just put a bunch of names into a hat and whoever is drawn gets to present the show.

Course not, please don't be so cynical. He has a gig in Dublin at the weekend, ticket sales are stagnant and he needs to plug it big time.
