Cathal Murray just finished Late Date slot 2 am and will be on Rising Time at 5.30 am ...sleeping in the radio centre. Has this happened before !!?

Just heard his link and was coming on to comment :)

He's just babysitting Montrose overnight in case anything urgent happens that requires response; also he is there incase Morning Ireland is late to get on air..

Normally is there someone babysitting the radio network overnight now? since the one hour 'best of' and then rte gold started being relayed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,241 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Neil Doherty doing a double today as well. Covering for Ronan and Late Date.

It's just the newscaster now, and they've to watch over FM1 and 2FM and the news desk. I'm not sure who minds Lyric or RNG but I'm hazarding a guess that nobody is the answer.

I thought that the overnight news (which is just on Radio 1 now...dropped from 2FM) came from the TV building ??

It does; it's called into the playback system as required. Both are monitored from there.

The lad who did Late Date tonight (can't remember his name) was being tutored/collaborated with about the playlist via the phone by Fíachna.
Wonder will he get payment for that?

    michael comyn.

I think he said his name was Michael Comyn, there wasn’t a lot of chat from him, just no nonsense tune spinning. Would suit me better than Doherty anyway. Anytime I seemed to tune into Neil the past few days it was Phil Collins or the Spice Girls or some other pop nonsense. Then again, as I edge closer to middle years maybe I am just (yikes!) straying ever closer towards the Ronan Collins demographic!

Michael comyn was the first presenter on lyric back in 1999 and fills in regularly for marty whelan, amongst other presentation and continuity duties, including a religious show on radio 1 extra

Caught the end of John Creedon earlier, he played Lost in the Supermarket, great song by the Clash. Just over an hour later Cathal kicks off his show with the same song. What are the odds of that? And do these guys coordinate their playlists at all? Notice this happening on a regular basis.

yes it happens a fair bit maybe on the same day, especially when it's a musicians birthday or anniversary. In tonights example, would there not be a simple flag on the playout system when and at what time a track was previously played (unless they are using CD's)?

Yeah there was no specific reason to play that song, just a pure and pretty unlikely coincidence. No idea how they operate in there, no major crime committed, just thought it’s something that shouldn’t happen.

Have said it many times about the birthday and anniversary thing. It’s fine up to a point but they tend to completely overdo it. No more so than when Bowie and Elvis practically take over the airwaves for a couple of days each January and the same predictable tracks are played over and over.

Weekend it ain't but Lilian is on Late Date tomorrow evening (Tuesday.).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

    Thank god for Lillian!

Was a bit taken aback when last night's presenter - Neil Doherty I think - admitted he didn't know a lot about Ry Cooder and seemed amazed he should be ranked No.8 on a list of the all time great guitar players. Maybe it's just a sign of how young these presenters are getting but I'm a bit perplexed that someone working in the business would be so unaware of the genius talent behind Paris Texas and other critically acclaimed works. Credit to him at least for playing a track from Cooder's simply brilliant new album.

Niamh McManus tonight. They seem to be giving all the continuity people a go.
Neil Doherty was excellent during the week.

Fiachna is sheer class. I didn't think he'd be missed recently but I found his replacements (Lillian aside)to be dreadful. No pace running through the shows, songs and moods all over the shop and little knowledge of the artists and music in general. It's a shame they don't give Fiachna the slot all the time with Lillian at the weekends and put Murray back on the early shift. He's fairly rubbish, too upbeat for that time of night if you know what I mean and his music knowledge debatable. A slot like that needs a smooth talking expert and RTE Radio 1 have 2 of those: Fiachna and Lillian.

What exactly is debatable about Cathal Murray's musical knowledge?

They are too down for that time of night though and seem to love playing "music" by people who can apparently only sing in a monotone .

Cathal seems to be more knowledgeable about music compared to some of his peers.

Though he played this creepy Animals track again last night :P

It is Mike Ryan (Gerry's brother) manning the show tonight playing current Radio 1 music. Occasional links.
He was on continuity duties earlier tonight too.
    So no real presenter tonight.

Late Date jingles and Idents are being played...no regular Late Date presenter has happened before, but they would just relay RTE Gold or have Cathal Murray's pre-recorded links.

    I like this !!

Aonghus was on last night and is on again tomorrow night. Assume they couldn't find a proper cover presenter for tonight, which is a bit ridiculous, but that shows the disregard those in power seem to have for the programme.

It could have been a last minute change to whoever was due to cover for Fiachna, who regularly it seems is gigging with the 'flowers'..these things happen in live radio

Agreed, but given the number of stand ins that show has had over the past year or two, surely there is more than one person they could call on at short notice. Only heard the last 5 minutes tonight so perhaps I am being unfair to say Mike Ryan is not a proper presenter. Would it be better to offer Alf McCarthy the weekend gig, assuming he would come back?

Mike Ryan was a regular on the 2FM live overnight schedule from late 80's to Early 00's.
To my knowledge, he has not presented a music driven show since.

Tonight/Sunday morning.. it seems to me the 'no show presenter' was a sudden situation and Mike just happened to be on continuity duties in the radio centre anyway.

I guess when you give the gig to a jobbing musician, this is simply what you can expect. It’s a farce and disrespectful to a programme that had a small but very loyal listener base. Was listening to Lillian Smith earlier, banished to a time of morning when there’s hardly anyone listening. Always available and passionate about her work, the way she’s been treated is a disgrace.

Lillian is great. I haven't heard much of Late Date of late, being honest, and will have to start listening to it again more. However, when I have discovered that Lillian would be filling in, I would tune in. Maybe The Weekend On One suits her personally?

It's great to hear Alf back doing what he loves doing - presenting a music show, even if it is only online. I listen back to his shows when I can.

Well, there's not really much change. Cathal is settling in fairly ok i think and Fiachna is still playing The Rose. Maybe i was overstating it a bit there, I dont know what Lillian thinks of the situation, but i'd be astonished if any self-respecting presenter would favour a 6am show over Late Date. She was passionate for Late Date, rarely missed a show and was hugely popular and so they took her off it. Bizarre, just bizarre if you ask me.

Her popularity has shown on Late Date alright. And, recently she said something along the lines of it being nice to pop in and say hello. So, obviously the listeners are very familiar with her.

Definitely not - the man was painful, IMO.
