Banting Diet, never heard of it.

Please enlighten me as I have to continue the good progress I've made since the half back in Sept(8lbs gone, but 1.8b back on since marathon) want to drop another 8lb before Donadea!!

Have sent you a link on FB, it's similar to palieo but much less restrictive I think. It's basically no bread, pastas, rice, spuds or any type of processed carbs so this morning for breakfast instead of the usual bowl of muesli or porridge I had a home made egg muffin filled with spinach, peppers & tomatoes and two bacon medallions - what's not to like :D.

    Thank you, love egg muffins.
I will follow up later as no access from work PC.

So the banting lasted till Thursday - I did manage to loose 2.5 lbs but felt awful in the process - life is too short - will just cut out the rubbish Mon-Fri :p

Bike: 80.8 miles. over 4 days
I've had lots of good days and a few off days on the bike in the last 18 months but this week has been by far the worst for dangerous incidents. By Friday evening I was tempted to throw the bike in the ditch and give up. I genuinely didn't know whether to cry or kick something. I'm sick to death of being treated like some second class citizen because I choose two wheels over 4 to get to work. We all share the road. No one owns it, no one pays 'road tax' and no one person's time is more important than anyone else's. Rant over..

Runs: 14.4 miles - looks like I'll have to wait another week to beat TBL :D

Monday: 3 miles @ 11:31 avg HR 130 with a club mate. Monday is traditionally my rest day but I couldn't say no when I got a text to run a few miles! Really enjoyed this, very much looking forward to getting more sociable runs in before the year end - assuming of course anyone in the club remembers me :p

    Saturday: 4.3 miles @ 11:26 avg HR 137
Was RD in Cabinteely parkrun, thankfully the rain stopped for the run, the post run coffee and another hour afterwards so I could get 4.5 miles in. I himmed and hawed about going up Killiney Hill or doing a recce of the Run The Line route which I have downloaded on my watch, but decided that running solo in the Dublin mountains would be even more suicidal than cycling to work, so opted for Cabinteely Park after results processing & a coffee. Did the route backwards and an extra lap to get a bit of hill work in before 25th. I say hill work, the hills in Cabo are like running downhill compared to RTL :D oh well.

Sunday: 7 miles at 11:23 avg HR 132. First time in ages had a super sleep and a lie on. I wanted to get 7 miles in today - RTL is 8 miles :). It was a cold breezy morning but the sun was out. I didn't have time to go to any of the nearby parks so just headed out the door for a made up local route which basically consisted of the village and the surrounding by-passes, not the prettiest of runs but I enjoyed it nonetheless - HR was quite high starting off but I kept the pace very easy and it settled down fairly quickly then. Delighted to get this done. Might manage a proper hill run next weekend though.

    Tnx

Was gonna ask AGYR for the link but I'll pass...

Making a conscious effort to cut out the crap myself without a daft diet. I find My Fitness Pal a good free app to get you focused.

You might get me this week on the mileage front as it's a step back week from this weeks high mileage of 25 :)

    TbL

Would you consider getting a turbo trainer for your bike? Might be useful especially with the shorter days :)

Yeah I use MFP too. Don't mind toy boy tang, the food was actually delicious but it's a bit stupid to try something like that when I can't tell if I"m tired (& dizzy!) due to sugar detox or the graves.

    Well done today!

Then I'd have to get the bus or train into work :D. I know last week was bad but in the main I love using the bike to commute The freedom of not being stuck to a timetable, sitting on a hot crowded bus in traffic or stuck between train stations because there are leaves on the line  I would find it very hard to go back to that so will need to find a way to continue on the bike & stay away from the crazies!

Just ignore the gobsh!!!tes!!! pretend you don't even hear them. I know its hard to do but just think, they are the ones frustrated and you can just fly on by while they sit in traffic!!!:D:D

PS didn't try the Banting diet yet..haven't had time to read up on it yet, but have been pretty good on not eating any rubbish..... but still room for improvement...

I'm catching up AM, really happy to see you back and lining up some targets for next year already :)

Looked up the Banting diet .... and dismissed any notions. Life is definitely too short :) Looking forward to seeing you at RTL.

    13th - 19th November

    Bike 72.1 miles.
Two people have been killed on their bikes since I posted my min rant above 😔 (Not forgetting the elderly lady who also died in car accident). Only 3 commutes this week as was working from home on Friday.

    Runs: Strava says 14.9

    Friday: 3.5 miles @ 11:23 avg HR 126
Oops! I had planned to go up to the club either Tuesday or Thursday but Tuesday was miserable and Thursday just ran away from me excuse the pun! so I got out for a run before I started work on Friday. Would have liked to have done 4 miles but my stomach had other ideas and as I got nearer the house there was no chance I could do an out and back to bring it to 4 - I had to call it a day and get home asap! It was a glorious morning and I did enjoy this in the end although it's taking me about a mile and half to 'get into' a run these days.

    Saturday: 4.8 miles (1.7 warm up @ 11:15 avg hr 125) 3.1 miles @ 9.25 avg HR 153.
Hartstown is my local parkrun and run by some of my clubmates. It was their 3rd birthday so I baked a cake and headed over to join the festivities. Did a lap to warm up then slotted in to the group assembled at the start line. Earlier in the week I'd had notions of racing this but I couldn't be arsed when it came to it and then one of my clubmates was pacing 30 mins so I slotted in with her and we had a very enjoyable trot around bringing a couple of people with us, a couple more dropped off in the last lap but still managed PB's. Lots of cake afterwards and a raffle, great atmosphere and the rain held off too. Thoroughly enjoyed this although if I'd looked at my watch after the warmup and seen .7 of a mile I'd have made an effort to bring it up to 5 for the day

    Sunday 6.5 miles @ 11:19 avg hr 129
Slept late, needed to pick up stuff from Blanch SC and be back home by 1 so headed to blanch pre crazy traffic and then stopped off at Hartstown Park on the way home. 4 laps of the park would be 8 ish miles so that was the plan. I knew psychologically it would be hard enough to do that but I was gonna give it a go. Half way through the 2nd lap I was already doing calculations to see how many miles I'd have run this week if I only did 6 today, or 7...and whether that would be enough to beat TBL :D. Convinced myself to do the 3rd lap and then I'd see how things were. I never really settled into the run, my legs felt heavy, my back is bothering me a bit and I was hot and cold all at the same time even though it was a lovely morning and I had been able to shed a layer at the end of the first lap because the car park is on the route. Anyway,, decided to call it a day at the end of lap 3 for 6.5 miles, knew I had run more mileage than last week so that will do - and no harm in a little LR taper before next weeks RTL :p. Made it home in plenty of time to shower and change and spent a truly lovely afternoon in a posh country manor walking and eating my weight in magnificent food - now I wish I had ran those extra 2 miles 😀

The aim for next week is to front load the bike Mon-Wed and total rest day Thurs & Friday.. Looking forward to it, not going to put any pressure on myself to do better than last year - annpr will undoubtedly leave me for dust but that's okay, she is far fitter than I am!!

    20th - 25th Nov

    Bike: 57 miles
2 days usual commute with shorter drive/bike commute on Friday.

    Runs: 11 miles

    Wednesday: 3 miles @ 11:01 avg HR 130.
Was working from home so got out for a few miles at lunchtime - managed to miss the torrential rain. Met a clubmate 2 miles in so the run was broken with a 15 min chat :)

    Saturday 24th: 7.6 miles @ 13:20 avg HR 150 max HR 185..
Run the Line! Had arranged to car pool with nop, denisb and Neady so we met up in Cabinteely park and took one car from there up to the start line. Much of the talk was on what to wear. It was BALTIC :) but bright and sunny. There was a biting wind that could potentially cut you in two - I had been too warm the previous year when it was also cold and sunny but I think a degree or two warmer so I decided on two t-shirts, arm warmers which could be removed, and the lightest of my running jackets as well as the lightest of my long running tights, a hat and gloves. Worked out perfectly well, I took the gloves off twice on two of the steeper accents but put them back on when we reached the dark side of the mountain.

I will admit I found this tough enough, I don't remember it being that hard last year and the descents were more difficult with patches of ice along the way. Plenty of people slipping and falling - I didn't plan on being one of them! Had the most excellent company of annapr for the duration of this run - I tried to get her to push on a couple of times but she was happy enough to stay put which I appreciated. That coupled with the fact that I had the car key kept me pushing a reasonable effort as I didn't want them finishing the longer course (which they'd started an hour previous) before me and freezing to death!!!!
Anna asked me at one point if I was monitoring my heart rate, I wasn't - I was afraid to look :D. My favourite part of this run was last 2KM which were downhill on smooth surface so we could really let the legs go. Finished strong enough in 1:45, a minute slower than last year which is not bad at all given my complete lack of fitness and the ice which slowed down the descent pace.
An excellent race, brilliantly organised for a super cause, there is nothing to fault this and we really were very lucky with the weather. Was fantastic to meet up with FBOT, MurphD, annapr Denisb, killerz, FerrisB, Neady, Nop and Singer. Enjoyed a good post race warm down by the fire in the adventure centre.

    Sunday 25th: 1.2 miles @ 16:05 avg hr 141 max hr 199.......
My quads were in ribbons this morning when I woke up, like couldn't walk down the stairs ribbons, in fact I woke a couple of times in the night with the pain in my legs so I thought it would be a good idea to go for a gentle jog with the dog to loosen them out. Took a few mins for me to find some sort of rhythm and it looked like I was doing a race walk! About 7 or 8 mins into the run my watch gives an indication of whether the run is good or bad, this shows up as a + or - figure and for me it's usually either zero or somewhere around +1 - +5 depending. When the watch buzzed I looked and it said -8... Minus 8?! WTF? I looked at the screen which wasn't on HR so I flicked it over and got quite the shock when I saw 198 - my max HR is 185......Oh jesus! I stopped immediately and stood for a few seconds and watched as the numbers dropped but not hugely, carried on walking the dog, moved the watch to make sure it was in the right position but the numbers stayed stubbornly high - 150's (I was walking now, it should have been sub 100). After 1.2 miles I stopped the run & saved it, took off the watch and put it back on and started a second run, the HR was still high enough but suddenly it dropped, now it's reading 95 which is spot on for walking the dog. So I'm not really sure what was going on. Yes my RHR was 56 this morning - it would normally be about 45-48 but I'm a bit skeptical that the reading of 198 (max got to 199) was real. Anyway, will keep an eye on it during the week and I'm not going to race jingle bells next week.
I feel okay, yes I'm tired and yes my RHR is higher than usual today but that's understandable given yesterdays run.

Went for an amazing thai massage around lunchtime which has helped with the legs but stairs are still and issue :D I don't regret running yesterday though.

jaysis i'm glad you weren't looking at HR yesterday, we might have had to call the mountain rescue people :) Fair play to you for finishing it strong yesterday. Hope the legs are ok now.

When's our next trail adventure :D

Nice going Saturday, sounds like a great race. Garmins can give mad readings at times, only on my session Saturday the watch said I was running 4.30 pace for about a minute, now if it was 4.30 pace & felt as comfortable as it did put your money on me to run at least a sub 2.30 marathon in 2018!!!! Wouldn't worry about it AM but keep an eye on it all the same.

If you look at last years IMRA calendar there's a couple of interesting ones in January, one in Howth, one around Helfire. I'm sure they will have similar dates for January so let's pencil those in :D.

I'll be using the lift in work for the next couple of days but they're slightly improving :).

Well done on Saturday AM, sounds like you all had a great day(if that's your kind of thing).. I'll stick to the roads thanks...I hate not having stable footing as it wrecks my back..I don't even use the trails in the Phoenix Park!!!:o:o

Well done!! Fair play to anyone who managed that in the conditions on Saturday - you're braver than I would have been! Not surprised the legs are feeling it afterwards, massage sounds like a very wise idea indeed :D

Nice going on Saturday AM, I hope you've thawed and recovered well :) A great come back from you and just the right amount of effort by the sounds of it. That ice had the frighteners on me too, poor Denis and Nop were hanging around waiting for me as I delicately negotiated each patch of ice :D

Thanks for the chocolate treats after, they were AMAZING, I've been raving about them all week :)

There will be no racing tomorrow - it's the new me, I'm in it purely for the mug, the fun and I might even take a selfie mid race :D now someone tell me where I can find the fun runners section in here :pac:.

Joking aside, the ole body has not yet recovered from last weekend, my RHR has only today gone below 50 and I was only able for two days on the bike. But I fully intend to enjoy the run (30 mins will do me fine) and catch up with whoever is around!

    Jingle Bells 5K 2017 3.1 miiles @ 8:54 avg HR 156, max hr 180

Well that was super fun :). Arrived early to nab a spot in the papal cross car park. Walked up to the visitors centre to use the facilities and back down to the car in plenty of time to decide which of the many layers I brought I'd leave on or take off :p. It was damp, cold and windy around the start line as Anna and I had a good old moan about the conditions (which actually turned out to be pretty damn good!). Bumped in to chickey at the start too and mbarr. Finally settled on t-shirt, hat & gloves and suck it up if it was very cold. Sent Anna & chickey off on a sub 25 conquest (well done both!!!!) and I made myself stay a good bit back surrounded by lots of kids and people in costume. The start was very low key and off we jogged.

Nice & easy up Furze road where I came upon two club mates, stayed with them for a little but but then realised we were going too slowly for a sub 30 min so picked up the pace a bit coming up to the 1Km marker
    Mile 1 = 9:34 hr 138

Was happy with that pace and the effort felt 'comfortably hard'. My breathing was under control and I was enjoying myself. Turned the corner off Chesterfield Ave and at this point I started passing a good few people who either started in the wrong place or had gone out too hard. I knew I had sped up a bit but wasn't sure how much until mile 2 beeped
    Mile 2 9:03 hr 158.

We were heading for the downhill section now and I was expecting a rake of people to come rushing past me, I kept a steady effort but naturally enough the pace increased with the downhill, I didn't push it though, I reminded myself I was just here for the mug - I wanted to enjoy it as I've suffered at each of these races in the past going off too fast and blowing up! (although last year was worth it for the PB).
    Mile 3 8:23 hr 163

The finish was in sight and now a few people were pushing on and passing me, I pretty much let them go but increased the effort a bit coming into the finish straight with a smile on my face
    .1 7:42 hr 174.

Finish time 27:48 or thereabouts. Happy with that as I pretty much stuck to the plan to run steady and not push the effort levels too high. Great to catch up with Wubble Wubble, HelenAnne annapr, MurphD, FBOT, mbarr and chickey. Well done to everyone, some brilliant running out there today Met up with some clubmates too all of whom were very happy and lots of PB's all round.

Another good show by Donore even if they didn't bring the bags to the finish line this year (my only gripe!). Off to have a cuppa in the lovely mug :).

Happy new year to all. I've been himming and hawing about keeping up the log here as every time I say I'm restarting my training I seem to have a set back . I'll refrain from commenting on hopes or goals and just log the runs and see where that takes me ;).

Having read the book 'Rest is the New Sport' and having one to many encounters with an SUV on my commute to work I decided to take December off from commuting by bike, I only had 2 weeks in work anyway before heading to the states to meet my brand new nephew. The book is an excellent read and despite the name it's not discouraging you to run, it talks more about how you handle your recovery as this is key to everything. Before I bought the book I thought I might be in the 'Hormonal Fatigue' category (Thyroid hormones) but it turns out I'm actually in the 'Metabolic Fatigue' category which basically means I'm fecked but sure what's new!

Saturday 9th December: 4.3 miles including Poolbeg parkrun @ 9 min miles, 155 avg HR. Had been dying to try this new parkrun as I walk the dog there a good bit, enjoyed it but thought the course could be better laid out but a lovely friendly atmosphere with a fair few Cabo regulars there both volunteering and running.

Friday 15th December: 4.1 miles @ 11:21 avg hr 128. Ran with a clubmate after getting home from the office Christmas lunch which included 4 glasses of wine..... oh well!

Saturday 16th December: Last parkrun of 2017.. Hartstown parkrun with woody @ 9:57 avg HR 157. Hmmm, have run Cabo with Woody a good few times with no problem but there were a couple of very large dogs taking part in this - not ideal with a small frightened dog. Won't be repeating that mistake!

Sunday 17th December: 2 miles 2 9:59 avg HR 137. I had 20 min window to run so headed out for local loop at faster than usual speed.

Thursday 21st December: 3.4 miles @ 10:50 avg HR 130. First run in the burbs of Charlotte,, North Carolina in sun and 20 degrees, lovely lovely lovely! Especially as it didn't involve a screaming newborn, or a screaming toddler 😀 I love my niece and nephew to bits but holy chryst they're loud!!

Friday 22nd December 4 miles @ 11:00 avg HR 133. Had gone out for a US pancake breakfast which was divine but required immediate exercise to run off at least part of it 😃. Again a gorgeous warm day, I had brought shorts and tshirts to run in but no singlets which I was regretting.

Saturday 23rd December: 2.5 miles - best not discuss the pace.... It was roasting today and I'd say jetlag and the hours spent soothing a crying baby were taking their toll. I had to stop and walk a couple of times, eventually abandoning the run and just walking home.

Sunday 24th December: 3 miles @ 10:26 hr 135. Left the house much earlier today while still nice and cool. Not a sinner out this Christmas Eve, just me and the squirrels who would literally come up and chat with you!

Tuesday 26th December: 4 miles @ 10:35 avg hr 133. Ventured a bit further afield out onto the main roads and up to the next mall type place and back home. Unfortunately all the parks seem to be on the other side of the city so routes are very suburban. Still, a run is a run!

Ask and you shall receive...... So, it's time to look at some regular running and to rebuild my fitness and what better way to do that than to join a stable of speedy racehorses and hope some of their awesomeness rubs off on me ;).

Tuesday 2nd Jan 3 miles @ 10:41 avg HR 135.. Home sweet home to the DAMP DAMP DAMP DAMP weather of Ireland, did I mention the DAMP??!!!! Ugh.. Did a local loop. Storm whats her face was blowing so I had her at my back for some of this and in my face for other parts.

Wednesday 3rd Jan: 3 miles @ 11:08 avg hr 132. Again with the damp... jeez

Friday 5th January: St. Catherine's park, 4 miles @ 11:13 avg HR 135. Went for a badly needed Thai massage in Lucan followed by this glorious run in one of my favourite parks. Sunny but cold but really lovely. Not easy to keep a low HR on some of the hills in there but felt great regardless.

Sunday 7th January 4 miles 2 10:40 avg Hr 139.... oops. Met up with some FFL clubmates in the PP for this, it was cold but sunny and beautiful and running in company has many benefits even if the the pace & hr was a bit hot. I can't spend my life watch watching, besides, the high HR probably had more to do with recent overindulgence's and poor sleep. Dry January starts on Monday!

Sunday 7th January Bike 3.6 miles as the sun was setting - a quick spin around the village to make sure the bike is still working properly before I get back to the work commute next week. Where have my 3 weeks off gone to??!!!
