Ya, I'm seriously considering it this yr, I had to cull a couple of heifers in the spring that picked up ecoli mastitis, I know improved hygiene could have helped, but it was during peak calving days. Thinking of calling in the hoof paring lad wit the turnover crate to insert the sealers this yr.

A few lads in group did it and said it reduced cases to 0 for them. Got a lad in with crate to to them. Will prob do it as well myself

in my opinion better off spraying your heifers regulary prior to calving than doing that.heard there was research done in nz that said it was just as effective

Looking at today's farming independent. Darragh mcculloch is farming his land again after the championing of the big dairying farmer that was leasing it?

    +1

Also find gut protectors like the green top milkshake if feeding whole milk good. I use a milk replacer with a gut protector in it. Have you tested the dung? Could be something else too that's why it's best to call the vet.

Defo dung test, the main worry would be that it's crypto also.

Yeah contacted vet also, just looking for nuggets of info. All cows were vaccinated, this one must have slipped thru the net. The dung was pure water. Calf was dead at eleven. I wasn't here until ten, too late at that stage.

All the other calves got vaccinated milk. No issues. Halocur programme here so fairly confident it's not crypto. Calves born since all seem fine. Touch wood.
    Thanks for all replies.

i lost calves after halocur before...in my experience if your using halocur crypto usually hits the calf at 19 days on if your not it hits them at about 12 days. i find rota scour tends to be more pasty whereas crypto is pure yellow water.

Didn't get the Indo today. I remember the episodes of ETTG where he went into partnership with a dairy farmer and they were extending farm roadways to cater for the cattle. I wonder what happened?

For what I remember was their an overpass over a main road, everything seemed to be going well at that stage. I'd like to know how many partnerships last ten years

A lot of partnerships will naturally come to an end for different reasons. Its important to have a clear exit plan with any partnerships.

Stand corrected but from memory this particular partnership was intensively promoted in media circles (Farming Independent and ETTG) as the way forward in adding value to both a neighbouring smaller drystock/veg farm and the neighbours dairy farm. Basically it was the way to go for marginal farmers - get into a partnership with your local dairy farmer and your on the pigs back!
I don't remember hearing or reading about a clear exit plan at the time.

Don't think so. Haven't seen the paper but not all the land was leased out

    Fair play to him.

    He's gone back fulltime farming.
Has a good few on farm projects on the go.
Full story is in the ear to the ground magazine.

See today's GDT auction took another 3.5% dive.
Surely going to be price reductions for Nov milk now.

Is he still doing the daffodils? Is some of the land still leased out. What full time farming is he doing?
