I wonder if we'll ever get over this inferiority complex that makes people attack the faintest whiff of Englishness. I find it kind of sad that as a nation, we're obsessed with defining ourselves in terms of what we're not.

There are some postboxes desecrated with crowns still. They should be replaced with a silhouette of Kevin Barry.

Did Kevin Barry found An Post?!?

    No, probably not.
Trying here to think of a better analogy.
It just seems correct to assume that a reference to the Queen stipulates the current Queen of England and not some other Queen.
I know when the Queen is mentioned in the US they assume it is the Queen of England.
She’s very old and very famous I suppose.
Ok if I say Leo who do you assume I’m referring too?

Still not the same thing. You should understand that Leo is OUR Taoiseach. QEII is not OUR Queen.

The terrorist British royal family didn’t either.

    Because it’s THEIR king.

Do you have difficulty comprehending this.

If I said the president I’d obviously be referring to Michael Higgins.

Fair enough, I missed the bit where you said Irish people (lthough I don't actually know many of them who do that).

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I know, you started another rant of a thread on that before!

You don't call a married woman by her maiden name even if you're rude enough to insist on using surnames at all.

so referring to her by Mrs. (Married name) is rude? That’s her name.

As someone who isn't Irish or British, seeing how pathetic some Irish people are towards all things British was a real eye-opener when I first moved here.

Am used to it now, though :pac:

She's currently the oldest reigning monarch, the longest reigning monarch and the monarch reigning over the most countries.
Due to the above three, the extent of the former British empire and press popularity she is also the best known queen.

Taken together that puts her well above every other monarch worldwide, and she becomes the queen.

I'm not a fan of monarchy and I'm certainly not a "west Brit" but people say "the queen" here because it's known full well who is being referred to, she's only across the Irish Sea and we are familiar with her and not familiar with other queens.

It's not because of a sense of admiration/being subordinated.

Nope, I would think you were talking about the US president. Ijust call our one, Michael D.

With the British being our close next door neighbours and all, I think it's far more likely that someone in Ballydehob who happens to mention "The Queen" in passing conversation with someone, is probably referring to Liz from Buck House, and not Queen Someone Else from Another European Country Who Has Never Had Any Dealings With, Or Bearing On, Our History.

It's probably safe to assume 99% of the UK population have no idea Ireland has a president.

Says a lot about you as a person.

Says a lot about many people in this country then. I only ever hear him referred to as Michael D of Mickey D.

    There's no disputing that.

It's kind of fascinating to watch them though. Like walking into a working-museum where you get to see what life used to be like.

It really annoys me when Irish people say THE Queen when referring to QEII. She’s A Queen, not THE Queen.

If I said the king, to whom would I be referring? King Harald of Norway? King Gustav of Sweden? The king of Spain? King Wilhelm-Alexander of the Netherlands? There’s more than one King. So saying “the” king wouldn’t make sense without context.

Similarly there’s more than one queen in the world. When someone’s uses “ The Queen” in a sentence I always say “which one?”.

    That’s west brits for you.

She's the queen of England not a queen of England

Because how then are people supposed to know you aren't referring to Queen Margret II of Denmark.

Every single person here knew exactly which Queen you were referring to in your title, despite not specifying, so I don't see the issue with referring to her as such.

Even people from European countries with queens (and kings) as head of state know exactly who "The Queen" is. It's disingenuous nonsense from Irish republicans to pretend otherwise.
