One thing I find disappointing (and would make the pods longer) is that they don't revisit items they've discussed. For example, they discussed the World Series Game 7 on Wednesdays pod and all about the build up with US Murphy, but then it's Friday now and not a mention of how the game went or anything. Would be no harm having an extra ten mins on a pod discussing the outcome too.

Couldn't agree more particularly as it was a major upset and went against everything US Murphy said on Wednesday with the Astros winning it.

Totally agree with this. It is very strange ahright. You should send that into the editor.

Tony Evans lads. It's not that hard. Was the football editor of The Times up to recently enough I think.

But yes he is a professional grump.

Listened to this today - god Evans is a tool - he didn't seem to know what his own point was when challenged.

Get sick of listening to people say oh I wish it was the old days. Seems liverpol fans more than any other. (Maybe cause I work here?)

You see irony, I see a queue of posters coming up to have a pop at someone who had critical views of the pod....much as I predicted.

It’s the mood around here...it’s so ingrained that those that do it don’t even acknowledge to themselves that they can’t handle criticism of the pod.

I had a look at your posts on the search function. I only looked at the first two pages but it was all negativity. It just seems bizarre that you'd keep listening when you don't have much positive thoughts at all about it.

Well my last few posts have said that what I like about the show (it’s funny) and that I enjoyed yesterday’s show so not accurate to claim I am only negative. I think their other strengths are their branding ability and the way they tease upcoming shows is strong. They’re just a sound bunch of lads.

On the other hand I take your point, I am mainly critical. I prefer critical to negative. I’ve been listening to them since the Newstalk day’s and loved them on OTB. SC- I have my issues with. The GAA coverage, richie sadlier, Ken’s over reliance on psychoanalysis of what managers say to the media to name a few.

I think the show needs a freshening up. Cut off some deadwood and mix up the format more.

Listening to the 1000th pod this morning on my extra long commute... Really enjoying it.

There are very few commentators with the natural sense of timing that Hamilton has. Like everything - we won't know how good he was until he's gone. He is the voice of Irish football for me.

So many people would go into raptures about Jimmy McGee but I could hardly stand him as a commentator. I always thought George was in a league of his own.

I'm the opposite, never rated Hamilton at all, find him far too garrulous, always on hand with an irrelevant stat.

How were you on Jimmy McGee? :)

    nice use of garrulous btw

Ken is loving sticking the boot into Jose! As someone who doesn't like Jose, that was an enjoyable podcast

Well it's surely the mot juste for the man who uttered this gem:
“Real Madrid are like a rabbit in the glare of the headlights in the face of Manchester United’s attacks. But this rabbit comes with a suit of armour in the shape of two precious away goals.”

That bit illustrates one of George's most irritating mannerisms for me: when he makes a mistake or says something a bit 'off', he can't just correct it, he has to rationalise it to show he was sort of right all along...

As regards the late Jimmy, I've sort of forgotten what he was like as a soccer commentator but I don't remember him getting on my nerves like George so I guess he must have been fine. In general, commentators are like refs for me, the best ones are the ones you notice least.

George is the voice of many a great moment in Irish football history and I can't help but love his voice for that reason. I can't imagine listening to anybody else when we're playing.

George and Jim Beglin are a great combination. Real sense of occasion when they're together.

George has a recent issue with player's names. Saying Sanchez instead of Suarez a lot once. It's happened with other players too.

George also has a major issue telling two players apart if they happen to be of a particular ethnicity or even have similar hairstyles.

Thoroughly enjoyed the interview with George. I wish it had gone on for longer! It was actually great to listen to him outside of his normal commentary role.

Have they been of a slightly higher standard lately (mostly)? Certainly found myself laughing out loud quite a few times recently.

Like McDevitt saying Sid Lowe "cuts through the bullshìt" by clearing up the volley/half volley business.

"Sunderland are like a duck that's it just a pair of legs under the water, and the duck itself has been blown away by an explosion of some kind"

Thought the Players Chair with Shay Given was excellent.

Whatever happened to the TV show? Did the lads get bored or did RTE not dig it?

I never felt it fully settled down, but was still miles better than most RTE entertainment, or God help us, sports entertainment shows.

RTE don't have plans for any more apparently.

Of course they don't. Room must be made in the schedule for a vehicle for someone's nephew.

As much as I love the podcast and loved the newstalk radio show, the TV show never really worked for me.

The TV show should have been called Second Gear.

It didn't really work, given what we've come to expect from the team, but, as someone else alluded to above, it still beat the pants off the bulk of the monkey tennis nonsense on rte.

I enjoyed the tv show for what it was. I think it failed because the driving force behind the pod is Ken Early, the man is a nervous wreck in front of a camera though. He never really got going on the tv show at all.
