Murph sneering at the idiotic notion that the GAA is somehow to blame was the highlight of yesterday's podcast, also Ken was right about the Denmark manager's comments post match, he did come across as an awful tool.

I think he was sneering at the idea of getting rid, as if gaa isn't as valid a sport as rugby or soccer.

Numbers have been rising since they started the pod, and steadily increasing for the last 3 months. It has as much to do with the return of the football season in general as it does the WC qualifiers, IMO.

If Ireland had qualified for The World Cup they would have an expected a big surge in subscriber numbers around the time of the tournaments approach.

Never mind this business down under, a compromise GAA - Soccer match is where it's at.

    I'd go.

Basically Rugby with forward passing and a round ball?

But without rugby people, the single worst thing about rugby.

Just listened to Richie's latest Player's Chair with Paul Stewart.
Pretty heavy-duty stuff in comparison to the usual interviews. Difficult subject matter to cover, but felt Richie did a great job.

Almost didn't listen to it when I read the subject, but have to say Paul Stewart came across brilliantly. Down-to-earth, no bull**** and really selfless in his outlook. Hope it does encourage others victims to find help.

Because there was huge national interest in the playoffs and they kept advertising additional coverage of the playoffs on the free pods. It's hardly a coincidence

The free pods have stopped me downloading. How they manage to fit 30 mins of actual material into an hour is infuriating!

It is like they are trying get rid of all free people with constant spamming

    Definitely wont miss them

Well fair enough. If you don't enjoy listening to something then don't do it. I personally find the podcasts excellent , and for the equivalent of 25 cent per pod I think they're excellent value, especially if you do a lot of commuting.

The free pods are only free to serve as advertising for the subscription service, so if you're bombarded with advertising for the world service I think you're going to have to expect it! They aren't giving to you for nothing out of the goodness of their hearts!

Big test for second captains in 2018. Seems nothing much is going to happen in Irish sport next year from what I see after Tuesday. They are going to have to get even more creative.

They'll still give a lot of coverage to the World Cup.
There will be a huge focus on The Six Nations.
The GAA senior inter-county championships have been revamped. Lots more matches so that'll mean plenty of of airtime.
The Ryder Cup is on at the end of September.

Possibly you are correct but The Mcgregor fight and Ireland’s World Cup qualifiers were the two big audience pullers this year I would have thought as well as the originality of the launch of the world service.

I don’t see anything that great in 2018 in irish sport. 6 nations is there every year like.

It's still a World Cup summer and football fans are the bedrock of their audience: They should be more than grand. They would have killed for an Irish qualification for even more listener numbers, but their daily coverage of it is still going to be a massive draw for people.

super 8s will definitely give them content, will it give them interesting content I’d doubt. Gaelic football is a big circus up to semis when the same 4 teams go to war every year. The hurling is potentially interesting to watch next year in the new format in fairness but not convinced hurling is a big draw.

Ryder cup will turn more people off than on. Plenty see it as a load of ****.

But man city running away with the PL isn’t great for them either. As Ken himself said articles about city get far fewer clicks. You need Liverpool and Manchester United doing the business.

Aye I’ll defo be a subscriber during the World Cup. But either side of it I don’t know. The Irish international team not having much next year at all to get excited about is a bit of a downer.

Unlikely I'd say. I love SC but they have never shown any interest in the LOI. It's a bit of a blind spot with them to be honest.

Ken loves the loi these days. Expect match reports live from dalymount any day now.

In fairness of the 8.5k subscribers how many of them go to LOI games.

As an oversea subscriber if I had to listen/pay for Loi reviews I'd be out the gap

Are you joking me!? They despise covering the league. I am a season ticket holder for a LOI team and I stupidly thought when they moved to this new format they would surely have a segment on the league once a week. But nope not a hope. Would it kill them to have a 15 minute segment each week? Hardly. For people who have no interest you could easily skip past it like I do for 99% of the GAA stuff. Some weeks they only put out a few half hour shows and they could easily do it on weeks like that. Have a journalist on and just talk about the topics of the week or people with books out or ex players/managers with interesting stories. Absolutely love the podcasts and am a subscriber from day one but yeah this is the one part that really annoys me.

I'm not a LoI fan, but a few weeks ago Ken was mooting the LoI as an answer to the question of where the national side might source players in the near future. If that wasn't just a throw away comment, or an aside playing devil's advocate, then they really ought to think about their level of coverage of the league.

The only thing I would say is that they might be conscious that any coverage of the league is going to involve negative comment, and there's a certain cross section of LoI fans who are particularly and vocally thin-skinned about any sort of aspersions being cast on the league. Still, I think they should brave it.

Someone like Emmet Malone once a week, or even per fortnight, for ten or fifteen minutes seems doable. Richie is maybe a bit too jaundiced on the league to be the only one to talk to about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

I would have zero problem with them having something negative to say once it's fair and balanced and not just a lazy attempt at talking about it. Like you said they could just get a journalist on it to talk about the league if their knowledge of it is not up to scratch. I mean they even dedicated more time to covering surfing than LOI this year ha! I mean even if there was people who didn't want it maybe they should release it as a separate pod on a Friday or something (even if it's only 15 mins or whatever), then they could judge how many downloads it got and how much interest is actually in it.

Dan McDonnell does a podcast- LOI weekly. I’m not a LOI man but I’d listen because it’s good IMO.
