maybe because most electrical poles are like 50 years old in rural areas then you have ton of tress growing inches away doesnt need a gust to break the circuit.

That is totally untrue. The networks are constantly renewed and the vast majority of poles were replaced in the past 6 to 14 tear period. Timber cutting is carried out constantly. These are faults from fallen trees, not overhanging branches.

The forecasted track of the storm moved, as is nature's wont. The greater Dublin area was always going to be the most sheltered part of the country anyway, given the direction.

There's enough damage done thus far to suggest that erring on the side of caution was the wiser approach.

Yeh exactly, if schools hadnt been closed and a single child was injured or killed everyone would be calling the government services incompetent and negligent

    How can you be underwhelmed?
360,000 with out power, 2 people dead, business/houses/etc damaged.

I quite clearly stated I can only talk about where I am. I know its alot worse elsewhere, but I was expecting it to be alot worse...where I am. Precautions were taken, and rightly so. But as of right now its not too bad where I am. Windier than usual but given we were given a 1pm hit time for dublin I expected alot worse by now.

Those who are saying they are underwhelmed by the storm or that it's just not as "stormy" as they were hoping, you're pathetic. What do you want to make it impressive, homes being destroyed, mass casualties, some good special effects? People have died, you need to be grateful if your family are safe.

We have minor damage on our property that will be expensive to fix, I don't care once my husband gets home safe sometime soon, he's on standby as he's emergency services and I'm just glad he's not out clearing trees with others falling around him.

On the coast here near Clogherhead, Co. Louth. Certainly not as bad as expected (and as we sometimes get), definitely windy but no real damage and we have full power still thankfully, hopefully it stays that way. Terrible to hear about people dying because of this.

Why do people make such a big deal out of this? W've had 5 or 6 storms like this hit Galway in the last 10 - 12 years. This is no different but you'd swear it was the end of the world the way some people were going on.

In my opinion the reason we're not looking at more deaths is because of the schools closing/shops shops closing. It's fine looking out the window at it.

It has been the end of the world for three people today.

Jaysus, roofs, schools and football stadiums get ripped apart by the weather every second year in Galway!? I had no idea...

3 people's worlds have ended so far, and the worlds of their families and friends will never be the same again. We can only imagine that a lot more worlds would have been ended or changed forever if we didn't have all the warnings. That's why people are making a big deal of this.

The only thing pathetic here is getting offended by someone saying they expected it to be worse. And feel free to correct me if Im wrong but I dont recall anyone saying they had hoped it would be worse. Im sorry for your losses through damage and hope your husband is fine but getting outraged because me or anyone else merely stated its not as bad as we thought it was going to be is a little sad.

*Touch wood* but it's looking like Dublin might escape the worst of it, we're at 4.30 and some fairly violent winds but absolutely nothing approaching what happened in the SE this morning or even the midlands earlier this afternoon. Still definitely wouldn't chance my arm heading out by any stretch though.

I'm not sure why some people are still trying to play down this event. Do we judge these events by how many people have been killed? Only two people killed…so far, what a let-down eh lads?

Just looking at the twitter feed from Dublin fire brigade

    https://twitter.com/search?q=dublin+fire+brigade

    and their interactive incidents map

    https://t.co/ZkjJ1qTtuN

The loss of life would be much higher at this stage if we had hundreds of thousands of people milling about on the streets with trees, roofs and power cables falling on top of them.
The red level weather alert has probably saved a number of lives today.

What the hell was a horse doing in the canal?

Yeah definitely seems like Dublin got off lightly

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I cant remember having any gusts as fast as we had here in Cork this morning. Neighbours ridge tiles peeled off like an orange skin. Handy he's a builder.

What happened the man that died in Cahir?

I'd know his name but wouldn't have known him personally.

careful now, you could be labelled a pathetic gob****e for even daring to suggest its not too bad in your area.

RIP to those poor people. My heart sunk when I heard about the second death, I was hoping that news of the first would be enough to deter people.

I think where I am, the worst is passed. (I'm in kildare) We still have power and no major damage from what I see. Although the housing estate is pretty sheltered so that might have helped.

there have been plenty of posts today on boards from people saying they are disappointed that it wasn't worse.

People were saying 6 hours ago that it wasn't bad, before it had even started - just think the person in Waterford might have heard someone say that it's not that bad - and went out... likewise perhaps that lad who tried to cut the tree with the chainsaw - might have thought the worse is over etc.

It quite simple - stay in doors for the day - if it's not bad where you are - great enjoy it and be thankful but by posting it some may take it to mean it's not going to get bad go out - and then something could happen.
