What happened the man that died in Cahir?

I'd know his name but wouldn't have known him personally.

It was meant to be something involving cutting a tree!

I'm not so sure... I think we haven't reached peak gusts according to RTE who stated that it's going to ramp up between 5 and 7pm. I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

According to RTE he was clearing a tree that had fallen

Good job to the weather service advising people to stay indoors. Im sure a lot of poeple would have been injured if everyone had gone about daily business.

Exactly, it's bizarre. "Only two people killed! What's all de fuss for?"

If it wasn't taken seriously a lot more people would have been killed. Roads practically deserted yet two people die. Imagine what would have happened if traffic was normal with bus loads of kids about.

Some people, you really cannot spell it out enough for them.

Just outside D15 in Meath, so far couple of tree down....the felt on my shed is blown off and now we are starting to get heavy rain.....

Is the storm over or is it just arriving?

Big thanks to all the ES out there doing there best to keep us safe or help when we need it.

I seen that some people are out swimming, absolute morons, what ever about putting your own life at risk, needless putting others lives at risk when you've to be rescued is just beyond acceptable. You might be an Olympic swimmer, but going out against mother nature in them conditions to get your thrills, just give it a fúcking rest for one day of the year.

Looking at that 'Windy' site it looks as if the worst is yet to hit Dublin anyway.

there have been plenty of posts today on boards from people saying they are disappointed that it wasn't worse.

People were saying 6 hours ago that it wasn't bad, before it had even started - just think the person in Waterford might have heard someone say that it's not that bad - and went out... likewise perhaps that lad who tried to cut the tree with the chainsaw - might have thought the worse is over etc.

It quite simple - stay in doors for the day - if it's not bad where you are - great enjoy it and be thankful but by posting it some may take it to mean it's not going to get bad go out - and then something could happen.

Unless youre referring to other threads Im not aware of anyone being stupid enough to suggest they were disappointed it wasnt worse on this thread. Again Im open to correction but Iv read most of it and didnt see anything like that said. All I was saying is it hasnt lived up to the hype where I am. Thats not me saying I had hoped for worse. i was just stating what its like where I am. It was sunny with blue skies till about a half hour ago and we havnt seen rain yet. This is a thread about the storm, and all im doing is talking about it in relation to where I am. Its a bit sad that i or anyone else cant talk about our own experience of it so far without being labelled "infantile" "pathetic" or a "gob****e".

Going by the "short Range Forecast" tool on met.ie the winds will be dying down in Dublin after 5

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I can hear a kid out on the road messing and screaming. I heard it a few mins ago and figured it must be a neighbour going from one house to another, but now it sounds like she's playing in her garden.

Some people I think are just anti-government, and it doesn't matter what happens, you could have 100 people killed in cork and they would say, it's wasn't a national event, was just a cork thing etc.

They are also the same people that if no warning was given that would moan and moan if something happened to their house or their loved ones.

i might sound like sociopath but how many people die every day just by accident.sure the storm hit and few casualties, but this crap is ridiculous there's few people dying on the road at work every day from accidents should we post threads for every single fatality.

The hurricane that hit Puerto Rico was the real deal putting whole country in loss and damages not fecking few slates flying off the roof and someone living on the coast where that crap is annual occurrence, seems some treat it as def con 4 event.

Seems people in weather forum get their boners up for this crap when its windy storm, and people get day off to work.

most people sound like total snowflakes, if someone works in rescue services then you know what your in for, its not sitting besides bbq job where you sit and wait to put out some bonfire, once a year exercise.

funny enough went to store and all booze and bread section was cleared out some mentality sales figures for Monday like christmas eve , everyone's treating it as it will last for 2 months.pathetic

There are a lot of different threads on boards, so I'm not sure which one but there are plenty of people and they are getting shot down for it.

Did you ever state in your posts where you are located, or are people just suppose to guess?

There are plenty of posts earlier today saying that it wasn't bad - yet since those posts 2 more people have died... I hate to say it, but if everyone took the advice that was given and stayed at home - they probably would be alive now.

Also you talk about hype - what did you expect to happen?

Scamalert, with all respect. Doing nothing while getting all the warnings under the sun, is just needlessly stupid.

It might be an over reaction, but at leased it was taken seriously and action taken which to me has worked unfortunately people have lost there lives but we are not into double figures. All it takes is for example Dublin Bus running there busses and one flips over with a freak gust of wind and you've a serious incident on your hands.

3 people have died today that can definitely be attributed to the storm.

It would have been a lot higher if warnings had not been issued and subsequently observed.

The death toll has been lowered as most people stayed at home

Also, don't forget that a lot of emergency services are voluntary such as Coast Guard and why should their lives be put at risk for idiots who go swimming or walking along a pier?

I don't think anyone claimed Ophelia was going to be stronger or 'bigger' than many of the Atlantic storms we get on our coastline, what made her more dangerous was that she was impacting areas of higher population and greater vulnerability (places that don't get them as often) to high winds.

Hence the need for the red alerts. And it would probably have been a lot worse without the alert system I have to admit, though I'm not a fan of it.
