Can't really see Valve ever making another single-player, massive campaign game ever again at this stage. They make too much money selling hats and skins for their free-to-play multiplayer stuff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,539 ✭✭✭The Specialist

I think at this stage (if it ever does get made) it will never live up to the hype or expectation. There's been a fair gap between EP2 and now, and I'm not sure HL3 would bring anything new that we haven't seen already in the years since. It will always be a mystery as to why Valve just vaporised one of the most loved gaming franchises, but it's too late now to bring it back.

Why do people assume Valve aren't able to come up with new ideas of a potential HL3? They've done it time and time again, and there's nothing to say that they wouldn't be able to innovate again. I'm not saying i think it will happen, as they've moved on from just making games, but if they do it, i trust that they would do a damn good job on it.

tbh Valve don't seem to be to pushed about story driven games anymore, When they bother with games now they're generally about taking other peoples initial idea and polishing the game play and mechanics to perfection

Because they haven't released a new IP in 9 Years

All they do now is refine existing franchises (CS:GO) and/or try and milk every pennt they can via cosmetic microtransactions.

Because they don't make games anymore, they just tinker with their cash-cows and add more hats.

    Hat Life 3 confirmed

And i don't expect them to announce anything HL related, but i still think that if they were to do it, they'd probably do a damn good job.

They don't release **** games (at least they didn't, when they made them).

    Well,
We kinda got something Half Life related with this, apparently set after Portal 2.

they just release games that don't interest me in the slightest anymore :o

Going to be a text Q&A. He'll start a thread on the The_Gaben subreddit. Users there are already pleading with each other to play nice and by certain rules.

    🤪

That subreddit is a ****-show already. Everybody there seems to pretending that they're posting on a Donald Trump forum.

As mentioned, the reddit format is awful, but I think the above is a bit misleading.

That question was asked, then a follow up by somebody saying wasn't there a movie with JJ Abrams set in the universe. Gabe replied saying yeah, still coming (referring to the movie).

He did say they were working on single player games and joked about never mentioning the number 3 :p But nothing else really on that front. He also mentioned L4D is in a good space for creating shared narratives.

    So some positives at least.

He didn't really answer a whole lot, did he?

(I mean, if I was a billionaire, I wouldn't have even logged onto Reddit, but that's neither here nor there)

    No

Kind of seemed like a really sad troll

Then again, I don't subscribe to this "Praise Gabe/Valve" BS

probably be a VR portal type thing.

He gave more info than i expected, but i wasn't expecting much in the first place. An AMA from Gabe is never going to be where they announce big news, so what we got is about all we expected. Very good to hear that they at least acknowledge the fact that Steam support is utter ****, and it's also promising to hear that they do plan something with the Half Life universe, whatever that might be.

Gaben has led us into the promised land of VR and for that all is forgiven

On the games side though it seems the amount of money they make seems to encourage a lot of navel gazing about concepts

Sounds like a lot of sound bites & would believe improvements to Steam Support when I see it. On the subject of Steam, was it asked and/or answered about Steam's devolution into a bit of a home for Shovelware & Early Access scams? The stat about 40% of the Steam library being released in 2016 is pretty damning IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,499 ✭✭✭Sabre0001

So he does say that the movies are coming - could also be the new IP...or he could be saying "yep, there is a chance" no matter how slim that chance might be.

Confirms that they're working on single player games, but that most likely points to VR tie-ins.

What we really learned is that he knows Steam Support sucks.

    🤪

Would have liked him to go into more detail about the regrets he has about the Half-Life series (not all that much of a surprise that Xen was singled out).

I thought the whole thing was pretty damn underwhelming honestly.

I wasn't exactly expecting much, but it was just an obvious fan boy circle jerk.

So the writer of Half Life 2 Mark Laidlaw just posted a summary of the Half Life 2 Episode 3 script, with names gender bended to avoid legal issues. Given the NDA has expired, this is legit. The site www.marklaidlaw.com/epistle-3 is taking a hammering, so someone put it up on Pastebin:

    https://pastebin.com/q9DMFa7c

I'd say this is as good as confirmation that Half Life 3 is never happening. I guess Valve will have to make do with DOTA 2 and CS:GO...

The github link above replaces the fake names with real ones.

Sounds like it would have been a cool finale! At this point I'd be happy with a comic or animated conclusion (like the Castlevania series on Netflix).

Honestly, if that's real, it sounds like the ending might have caused a minor Mass Effect 3 style frustration; intentionally narratively ambiguous and tenuous. Would have annoyed me no end to have gone through all that story only to get a bit of an ellipsis by way of an bookend

It's posed up on Marc Laidlaw's site so it is real.

Anyway every Half Life arc ends like this so I'd think the onus would be on the player if the felt frustrated.

It's interesting to me now as it completely restages Alyx's position in the resistance effort. Was she an unwitting accomplice to G-Man or what's the story?

Instead we get the damp squib of Episode 2's lame cliffhanger for ten years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,335 ✭✭✭death1234567

Seems like it would have been a great game. As for the ending, it's impossible to give people an ending that they would be satisfied with. An open ended ending like the one in the link is all you can do.

I would bet any money this will inspire a team somewhere to build it in Source like they did with Half Life Source.

It's almost like Valve don't want/like money

Valve make so much cash off DOTA/Steam/Counter Strike/Team Fortress 2 now that a single player game like half life is practically irrelevant to them.
