I would my Gamesroom is just an embarrassment these days, plenty of classic consoles but terribly organised.
The nature of space does not lend itself to Ikea storage solutions!

Emulation has appeared in the title!

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Yeah, made the request, following consultation on the subject.
Emulation is innately tied to arcade and games from the whole history of the pursuit, so this forum was a natural home, but the notion of a sub-forum dedicated to emulation was probably not going to work, so a formal blending of the topic into the main forum was more appropriate.
The rules remain in place though, and discussion on emulation will be strictly policed around links to roms and/or bios files, which will result in censure.

Bit of a shame, can't see the topic growing here very well despite its relationship to retro gaming. It'll need dedicated threads, a few of them if it's to stand any chance and that'll clutter this forum up a fair bit. Plus, it'll piss off the enthusiasts here who have no interest in emulation.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,753 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

We'll see how it runs over the next couple of months.
Should this forum become cluttered we can revisit the sub-forum idea.
Otherwise, traffic was pretty light on this forum, yet once the idea of a more formal link with Emulation was discussed traffic increased.
I appreciate your opinion and will certainly watch out for enthusiasts and regulars becoming dissatisfied with the changes.

    "Arcade, Retro and Emulation" :mad::mad::(:(

I've no problem with emulation being talked about in the right area at all, but the name change isn't really necessary.
If people are looking for emulation advice and information they will find it if it's listed here whether the word "emulation" is in the main forum title or not.

"Arcade and Retro - Emulation" A sub section is the cleanest way to do it no? One thread for all emulation needs doesnt work on other sites and I don't see it working here either.

    Just my view on it.

    Dirty, filthy emulation.
    Only peasants use emulation.

Yeah, well I had a thread devoted to the topic, and voting and comments made by other mods and users, and there was good points made on every side, but a sub-forum just didn't seem appropriate at this juncture.

Perhaps, if emulation gets a lot of discussion I can reopen the sub-forum idea again, the sub-forum got a lot of interest as well.

And, as for the one thread, I just popped in a general chit chat thread, it's up to other users to generate the topics and threads they want to discuss around emulation, rather than me determining the headings alone.

But I will listen to the regulars as always, and I would ask that it's given a couple of months, if by October it's not working out I will switch the forum back or explore again the idea of a sub-forum.

This is the thing, it'll get messy with emulation threads among the regular stuff. But I understand the forum has been a shadow of its former self the last year or so and the need to get more people on using it. I just think a sub forum is the better/cleaner way to go(if someone should make a emulation thread elsewhere or on the main A&R, a mod can just drop it in the emulation subsection).

And the name change, it cheapens what was/is A&R for me here on Boards. I know that sounds silly, but its how I feel on it.

Anyway, it's just my take on it, and anyone who knows me or the other sites I'm involved with knows I'm absolutely a big fan of emulation!
Sorry to go on about it, I just had to speak my mind on this :o

Well, I would genuinely hate to lose regulars over this change to the forum.
I would say that there has always been threads devoted to emulation on this forum, the inclusion of the word in the forum title and a general emulation thread are likely to be the major changes, aside from a hopeful uptick in regular traffic.

Can it not be Arcade, Retro and FPGA instead? At least those are proper simulations of hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,499 ✭✭✭brianregan09

wow are people really that petty that they would refuse to post in here because emulation is in the title now O_O

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,753 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I don't think anyone is going to avoid a forum whose content is 99% identical to the forum as it was prior to the name change.

It's the regulars that make this forum work, that have always gave it it's character.

It's always been a privilege for me to be a poster on here, and an honour to be a moderator on here for some years now.
And while it has gotten a little quieter in recent months, but people have lives, regulars have changing demands, other sites may offer a preferable experience, shockingly!

But, I'd hope that regardless of its title today, or its title a couple of days ago, it will remain a place where people who love games of all vintages can come and obsess about their passions.

    Speaking of FPGA.....

Gideon the creator of the 1541 Ultimate I + II Cartridges for the Commodore 64 announced a new project

    The Ultimate 64!

A Full FPGA emulation of the entire Commodore 64 including the 1541 Ultimate II Functionality!

He received prototype boards a few days ago and is currently evaluating them.

I'd agree with this, not the most regular poster here by any means but it seems like a fairly minor change, were threads to end up as say, console specific it'd hardly clog up that much of an already quiet forum.

Snobbery within emulation, now there's a first

So the correct title would be ?

Arcade, Retro, Simulation and possibly emulation for the great unwashed

So long as the place doesn't get swamped with people just looking for prebuild Pi images we should be ok

Maybe there is a different way to look at this. Without emulation, interest in retro gaming would surely be much less, with the barriers to entry too high for casual retro gamers.

Would there be as many forums, YouTube channels and even some magazines devoted to retro gaming without emulation?

I think the subject matter is fine, it's the placing of it in this forum which I dont think is the best idea. Emulation can be a complex subject, it needs its own stickies, it's own per topic threads, it's own per emulator threads in some cases. It needs to be given space to grow, and I don't believe it can in this forum...if people here were interested in creating threads on retroarch et al they'd have done so already. The regulars and users here want to know about scart cables, scalers, consoles, prices for games etc...and that's fine.

It's akin to sticking formula 1 discussion in the classic cars forum, because eyre both about cars aren't they? The two audiences are different, and while yes, there is some crossover, I don't think the similarities are enough to meld the two topics. As said above, I can see the emulation topics dying a death in here before long.

Cidey, you're a good man and Boards is lucky to have you, we'll support whatever way you feel is best here in the end :)

I don't see an issue with the change, if you've no interest in emulation then there's no obligation to post in threads related to it. Give emulation discussion a go here with a relatively established user base and if it turns out to work well perhaps then look into whether it's warrants its own sub forum.

Ideally the name should have been Arcade, Retro & Systems Emulation...

ZX Spectrum related Android live wallpaper here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ludicrousspeed.paperback.spectrumloadomatic

It's free or you can unlock bits and pieces for just over a euro

It's a "scene" with tv, speccy etc and the tv is showing a variety of loading screens. Only had a quick mess but looks OK, no idea if it's a battery killer through.

There's a Commodore C64 version too, though no idea why you'd want that on your phone. :)

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonestar.c64wallpaperfree

Pro version of this is 80c (obviously not as good!)

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.
