This phone has Bluetooth 5 is this compatible with Bluetooth headphones or does it mean I have to buy a compatible headset as I use phone for music

I'm not 100% but if the Bluetooth is like all other technology then it should be backwards compatible.

Bluetooth 5 basically means it transfers data quicker and has a much longer transmission range than previous versions.

No need to buy new "Bluetooth 5" headphones, your old Bluetooth headphones will work fine with Bluetooth 5.

Also Android doesn't even support BT5 yet. It's just another h/w feature to tick the boxes for now.

Don't know if this has been posted, just a basic speed comparison. It's definitely nice and quick.

After a couple of days use I have to say I'm delighted with the OP5 and can't fault it. It's thin and light, is seriously fast (as the video above confirms), the UI is clean and easy to use, the camera seems fine to me but I'm not an expert, the battery lasts forever, Dash charge is amazing to me (first time I've experienced fast charging) and the fingerprint scanner works flawlessly.

I really couldn't be happier with it.

Hope it doesn't suffer too much screen burn. My 3 eventually burned in despite trying to prevent it.

I notice that the US price suggests a nice saving if VAT is not added. Looks like the 128Gb would be 480 or so and the 64gb approx 430.

    Slate Gray
    6GB RAM + 64GB Storage
    $479.00

    Midnight Black
    8GB RAM + 128GB Storage
    $539.00

Does anyone know if VAT is included on top of the US price like in physical shops?

Obviously I'd have to buy an Irish/UK charger too.

I might be going over in July and am tempted at that price, still using my oneplus one which I got close to launch.

As an ex Samsung owner I don't understand why you'd pay more for a phone with lower specs and (as far as

I owned Samsungs and the OPO,OP2 & OP3. I think from the list you made, that the Samsung comes out on top in all bar one (that doesn't really matter)
a really annoying skin in Touchwiz
Nova Launcher or Evie Launcher or any of the many launchers would do the job
Display 5.8 "Dual Edge Quad HD + SuperAMOLED (I HATE the idea of a slippy rounded screen which goes all the way to the edge!!)

True, Samsung has the better display. I don't find it particularly slippy compared to any other phones I held. OnePlus have stuck with full HD since Spring 2014 when they launched the OPO.
Octa Core processor (2.3GHz Quad Core + Quad Core 1.7GHz) (Less performence)

Different processors with slightly different clock speeds...You cannot conclude which is better just by looking at the clock speed. They're both brand new phones that are going to be fast. Common sense and the YT videos tell me you're unlikely to notice any difference
4GB RAM (50% less than the equivalent OP5)

One of the cons OnePlus seem to pull off. People read that off the spec sheet and think it'll be far better than other phones when in reality it isn't. The OP3 had a huge 6GB of RAM, and OnePlus didn't configure the phone to use it to save battery life.
12 MP rear camera Dual Pixel (lower spec camera)
Front camera 8 MP (lower spec camera)

It's not a lower spec just because of the MP count. I thought that was common knowledge. Ironically, having a high pixel count means that the pixel size is reduced.....the OP5 has smaller pixels than the S8. You shouldn't judge cameras just by their MP count....there's a variety of factors that determine the quality of pictures a camera can produce. (E.g. Optical Image Stabilisation which the S8 has and OP5 doesn't)

The front facing cameras have both quite different specs. The OP5 has higher MP count adn shoots 1080p. The S8 has larger pixel size, faster lens (aperture), and shoots 1440p. *(again) You cant judge which one is better just by reading off the specs as there's a variety of factors that determine the quality of pictures a camera can produce.
64GB - 50% less storage albeit it does have SD card expansion if you want to buy an SD card.

64GB=the same amount one of the OP5s have. If you want to bump the S8 to 128GB you can buy a 22 Euro microSD card and you have the option to pay less if you need only a little extra storage. If you want a 128GB OP5 you pay 60 Euro more (+ get RAM that probably wont be used :pac:).

Overall, I think the S8 is the superior phone. After a few years of having multiple OnePlus phones, I don't think they offer as much value as I originally thought. There seems to be compromises here and there, or they promise improvements but they don't deliver much improved products unfortunately:(

Did anyone get a tracking number? I have estimated delivery today but no way to see if it's made it to a Dublin depot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

Tbh I didn't see the tracking number for ages. It was a nondescript white button and was down at the bottom of the order page to the left of a red button. Sorry for vagueness of description but mine was delivered already so the page has changed and the buttons are no longer present

Once the camera is not important to you then it's a great phone. I love the phone but the camera is pretty awful if I am honest. Detail in the shots is terrible. Worse than I thought it would be.

That's surprising, I'm very happy with the camera. All the early reviews were slating it but pictures are very good to me. Even the portrait (fake bokeh) effect works very well....when the subject stays still and they don't have the sun behind them which makes a 'glow' around them.

In reply to other comments on the samsungs, s7/s8, being very slippy, well they are. The s7 edge was the only phone I've ever had slip from my hand. Well the OP5 is very very slippy too with no cover on. Twice it's tried to get out of my hand. A cover is essential imho.

They took a while to process my order but I received it the day after they sent (from Poland) - I saw this on Twitter:

If you have been waiting extensive time for your #OnePlus5 to be shipped, check your email. OnePlus are sending out coupons to apologize!

    not sure if helpful.

The camera shots are ok once you don't look too closely but if you zoom in on hair, grass, background details, etc. then it starts to get a bit too squidgy/smeary/blurry/fuzzy. I just expected more from a phone in this price bracket - was just admiring clarity of a low-light, indoor shot from an "previous gen" S7 the other day. OP5 seems nowhere near it, even in good light - not even close. The bokeh effect can be fun alright though if a bit hit-and-miss. I would say that the €180 VF Smart Ultra 6 or the old Galaxy S4 that I was using during the year were both as good if not better for detail in the camera department. I'd need to take side by side shots of the same objects from the same range in the same light but, quickly looking back over older shots, that's my first impression. Hopefully software updates will improve things a bit.

Can someone try playing back a video recorded on the OP5 on a PC? I was just trying it there on a Linux PC with VLC and none of the videos that I'd recorded would play properly - might show the first few frames and then the picture would lock up although the file itself would seem to continue to play according to the progress bar and audio output. VLC usually plays anything thrown at it so wondering if anyone else is seeing this?
