    Same price as the s8.
does anyone have a list of preferred alternatives to the one+5?

I had the one+1 since a few months after it came out, but lost it a few weeks ago, so I've been waiting on the 5 launch.

The price was a little higher than I was hoping for so I want to see what else in competitive before I buy. or is the op5 the best in the bracket?

I'm not too bothered by a camera, more that it plays video well, and music. battery life and waterproof would be a bonus. Prefer the most recent specs. snapdragon 835 etc android 7 etc.

Not really fussed on brand, as long as the quality is there. want to avoid anything with excessive bloatware (galaxy 8)

Samsung S8 for €580 on Amazon.it There was a better choice of colours a few days ago but youd probably want a case on it anyway

As an ex Samsung owner I don't understand why you'd pay more for a phone with lower specs and (as far as I'm concerned) a really annoying skin in Touchwiz

Display 5.8 "Dual Edge Quad HD + SuperAMOLED (I HATE the idea of a slippy rounded screen which goes all the way to the edge!!)
Octa Core processor (2.3GHz Quad Core + Quad Core 1.7GHz) (Less performence)
4GB RAM (50% less than the equivalent OP5)
12 MP rear camera Dual Pixel (lower spec camera)
Front camera 8 MP (lower spec camera)
64GB - 50% less storage albeit it does have SD card expansion if you want to buy an SD card.

Apart from the camera, other points are fine. More pixels doesn't make camera any better. S8 camera will be better than OP5 and also screen is better on S8.

I use OP3T myself and have used quite a few Samsung phone.

So youd have a 5 over an S7?

Reading the specs aside from the processor the S7 is a better phone?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the benefit of this?

Well, I develop custom ROMs like LineageOS or AICP for my devices, eg I develop LineageOS for my galaxy tab S and AICP for my OnePlus3, so I always unlock my bootloader. Also best to do it at the start because it wipes the device!

Also having the bootloader unlocked can help you get out of situations, such as if your device gets bricked during an OTA update or something :)

    Thoughts on the camera?

Honestly, I like it. There are some issues, but i think they will fix them quick enough. Had an update out of the box that had 'camera' fixes. They did wonders with the 3/3t cameras after updates so looking forward!

This is the kind of naivety that OnePlus rely on.

TouchWiz is no more, and the Samsung UX/UI is actually top notch now. As an HTC fanboy, it pains me to say that Sense UI is no longer the king of Android skins, and Grace UX is much better. It's clearly an area where Samsung have spent a lot of their resources.

Your screen opinion is just personal preference, but 99% of people will say the Samsung screen looks better.

Clock speeds don't mean much without performance/endurance/throttling comparisons. Samsung did mess up the Exynos chip found in the EU S8, though, so the Snapdragon 835 definitely had a big advantage.

Extra RAM is useful, but does it make a difference?

Megapixel count on a camera means hardly anything. The HTC M9 had a 21MP camera, and it sucked. The S8 cam is better than the OP5 camera, end of. Same applies to the front camera.

Storage is definitely where the OP5 wins out. 64GB is more than enough for most, but you have the option of 128. UFS 2.1 storage is always going to be much better than an external SD.

"Naivety"? Seriously? That's a bit of a strong terms to use. I like as close to vanilla Android as possible and don't like the Samsung UI and restrictions it comes with whether it's been re branded "Samsung Experience" or not. I like eing able to flash custom ROM's without voiding the phone warranty etc. If that's naivety then I'm guilty I guess.

Maybe it is but I honestly can't ever tell the difference in day to day use so I don't place much value on it.

Well you don't "need" 8GB RAM but it does provide capacity for future developments which might use it.

Not really bothered about the camera, I rarely use it. I'm sure the Samsung camera is better as Samsung have pedigree in manufacturing cameras well before they got into making phones.

Storage is a no brainer. 128GB on board rather than 64BG + a 64GB SD card.

I guess if you are looking for a premium brand with a locked down UI and a slick camera implementation Samsung is the way to go but OnePlus isn't preying on naivety in order to sell it's products. It offers something very different which focuses on performance based on vanilla Android at a relatively attractive price point.

    Each to their own.

Honor 8 Pro and forthcoming Honor 9 (launching on 27th June) might be worth considering. Actually had a pre-order on the Honor 8 Pro but in the end I cancelled it - still wonder if that was the wrong thing to do. Both use the Kirin 960 which is very close to S835 in performance apart from 3D/GPU performance which is a step down. Both are dual-cams. 8Pro has a microSD slot and 1440 screen so worth considering. Marmite designs so not for everyone but pricing on the Honor 9 *might* be interesting (EDIT: It's £379.99/~€435, pre-orders allegedly now live on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Honor-Dual-Camera-SIM-Free-Smartphone/dp/B072WNX6MY/ ). Main problem seems to be the vmall.eu store, which never seems to have stuff in stock so if you don't get it on the pre-order then you might be waiting a long time/forever. I believe that they were a bit tardy sending out 8 Pro pre-orders too e.g. a week or more late from when they said they'd be delivered. Anyway, expecting delivery of my OP5 today so that's my decision made for the next couple of years.

Bloody hell we are getting a lot of choice.

I've the S7 on adverts with the base charger, will see if it shifts for the money I want. If not ill keep it, if it does then Ill have to choose the Honor 9 or the OP5! ..... OP5 seems to be a tad ahead

Collected mine this morning after a missed delivery yesterday.

First things first, it is without doubt 100% a rip-off of the iphone 7+....not that I have a problem with that.
Phone feels good, always prefer the metal feel to a phone plus it's very thin, very nice in the hand.

Personally I don't like the fingerprint sensor placement, on the back in the middle toward the top is the best placement for the sensor. It's very quick though, and unlocks quicker than my iphone 7. In mentioning that the need to click the iphone button with fingerprint too is very very annoying!

Dash charge is FAST! The last 3 devices I've had are all fast charge and this is by far the fastest. Really happy with it.

Setup reminded me why oneplus system was so good. I haven't used one since the OPO.

Now to get a ebony wood cover!

I'll try do a little comparison over the weekend vs my other halfs S8 and my work iphone 7 and my old LeEco Le Max2.

Ordered mine Wednesday still noted as awaiting dispatch.

First time stepping away from IOS looking forward to seeing the differences

So just got mine and I echo what lafors said above. Feels great, very solid and it's fast.

The first question I have is whether or not to apply the 3D tempered glass screen protector I got as part of the welcome pack or not? The phone comes with a traditional screen protection perfectly applied (by some machine) so I'm inclined to start off with that, see how it goes and hold the 3D protector back until/if the pre-applied protector comes off.

If I can get half decent protection from the standard protector why would I want to apply a thicker layer of protection instead?

I also like the Karbon case in the welcome pack. It's not what I'd call a "bumper" case but it's very stylish. Not sure it'll be on there long term though. I think I need more protection than it'll provide.

In the exact same boat, dunno what to go for!

Would those who have the phone mind posting a few pictures of the phone? Always good to see extras.

What are the prices of both versions? I can't find the prices on their site.

Also is it cheaper to buy from the uk or from the Ireland site?

It's a screen protector put on at the factory.
Best to just leave it on, unless you have your own replacement that you are going to use :)

For those that have theirs already... Did it come with a free case in the box like the midnight black 3T did? Mine is still at Parcel Motel in Dublin! :(

No free case anyway - just phone, charger, cable, SIM tool and a small quick start guide and safety guide. There are also a few little OnePlus stickers and a "postcard" from Carl Pei
