Went to see Alien Covenant last week. Anyone seen that? It's a film that really absolutely nails it in patches, is utterly frustrating in others and doesn't have the most satisfying of endings. I really couldn't tell if I rated it or not when I left. One of those ones where it has so much right, yet so much wrong at the same time.

I'm not sure I'll go see that one. There's two coming out this weekend that I want to see, Colossal and Guy Ritchie's take on King Arthur (which I believe is called King Geezer).

The best action film I saw this year was Kong. Great stuff.

    Does anyone watch filums?

I have almost completely stopped watching filums since moving here. Partly cause of the cost, but mostly cause every film has subtitles in French and German which is annoying. Especially cause I keep reading the French ones instead of just watching the movie.

I really enjoyed colossal, and my wife absolutely hated it. It's sits in a weird place between being a puff bit of fun and a hard commentary on alcoholism.

    Pretty much spot on
I wasn't bored by it like I was Prometheus, but I fluctuated between "this is kinda dumb" and "this is kinda great". Well worth a watch

Also saw Guardian of Galaxy - some great comedic lines and while the plot was MEH you didn't mind as the characters are brilliant

Haven't watched any trailers for it but I'm looking forward to new Planet of the Apes

I watch feck all myself. Game of Thrones and Walking Dead. I might watch a few other bits and pieces here and there, but nothing else would see me turn the TV on specifically for it. You could spend your life in front of the TV for all we have access to these days. That thought isn't a nice one to me.

But much of it is very good. The standard of writing, directing and acting on television is brilliant. Music has been ****e recently, but TV is great.

Hasn't King Arthur absolutely bombed? Colassal looks interesting. Didn't see Kong.

I hated Guardians 2. Honestly thought, outside the characters themselves, it was awful. Like watching a mate play a shooter with all the cheats turned on. No drama, suspense or tension. Colour by numbers.

Oh yeah that's definitely true. But if I got into shows the way I could I'd never leave the couch. I've too many other things I want to do with my time for that tbh.

Yeah King Arthur sounds like one of the biggest turkeys of the year. I can't wait.

The worst film I've seen by far this year was Fate of The Furious. I knew it would be bad but I didn't appreciate how atrociously awful it could be, great stuff.

I still can't decide if I liked it or not. I'm really into the genre and have read a lot of the expanded Alien universe content so I'm a bit of a nerd about it all.

    Personally there are some changes:
The implication that the Alien isn't some ancient perfect killing machine and was in fact crafted by David and also the way Billy Cruddup hatches almost instantly and isn't incubated for any seeming length of time and the guy who hatches on the ship had the facehugger on for 5 seconds

And all of the above are aspects I don't actually like and in my opinion detract from previous entries.

Also some of the characters (as in all horror films) do very silly things.

I don't even know if I like it more than Prometheus. Prometheus at least strives to do something interesting.

Ultimately the two films combined are nearly there in terms of prequels but not quite clicking. Like finishing a nice meal where your still hungry afterwards.

I watch an awful lot of TV but am very selective. Currently watching Better Call Saul, Fargo and Samurai Jack.

Saw the new Alien too. It's grand. They'll never recapture the old ones. The mystery is gone. Fassbender is outstanding.

The best version of Fargo was Fargo Boyle

Anyone ever rang revenue before? The most excruciating experience ever. Been on the phone for like 5 minutes and still navigating the menus.

The daft thing is the first thing they say is "ringing 1890 numbers is expensive" and then proceed to bleat on for 5 minutes. "Did you know you can do x, y and z online". "Check out our new website". Just let me fcuking talk to someone you clowns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

Yeah I had exactly that experience. Took me 30 seconds of chatting to someone to get sorted after about 10 minutes on the line

Any recommendations for pubs to watch the Leinster game in Edinburgh?

    No.

But I have a recommendation for food in Edinburgh. Bread meats Bread on Lothian Road. Went there last weekend and had their Reuben and holy lord it's fantastic.

(Three Sisters is the standard rugby suggestion, went there for the Ireland Australia a few years back and it was great)

They're quite good. They might actually be as good as TV these days. Having a great time catching up with the many I missed over the past 5 years when I was working long hours overseas. Watched Looper, that's a good one.

    Looper?..... Sounds like Venjur's autobiography?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,089 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I watch too much TV but I have some kind of OCD where I have to keep watching a series once I've watched a certain amount of it, even if it's in no way entertaining any more.

Yeah those 2 things really annoyed me too. There were other bits that were too "cheap horror film" about them. I definitely thought it was better than Prometheus. It had a number of moments in it where I thought "yes, they nailed that".

I do think that sometimes those in the movie industry need to learn that
not everything needs to be explained. It's okay for us not to really know where the Aliens came from. The black goo was bad enough,
but I could have lived with that. They just needed to leave that bit alone.
Plus, Shaw and now Daniels are two protagonists who have gone through hell only to be killed off (we have to assume Daniels isn't going to make it). What's the point in telling their story at all so? Especially when their ultimate fate is off-screen
    .

I think there is a plan to make a movie that timing wise happens between Prometheus and Covenant. I'm starting to think that Ridley Scott has no idea what he's doing with this revisit to be honest.

3 Sisters usually are happy to show any rugby and it might be a bit easier because it's a Pro12 game but it's also a hen party spot too so be warned. Seems to be the unofficial Irish pub of choice there too.

One of my mates got kicked out of three sisters on Saturday night for "Sectarianism" after shouting one of the "unofficial" choruses in the fields of Athenry! (along with about 100 other people)

So just remember to keep the singing a-political in Scotland. They are sensitive over it.

Have to agree wholeheartedly with the bar on that one

I'm currently watching Mad Men on Netflix (midway through Season 6), and following Better Call Saul
Dedicated Survivor (it's alot like Jericho) just finished up but new season of House of Cards will be out soon
I was watching Prison Break, made it to 4 episodes into Season 4 and had to give up as I realized I was hating it

Ah it was a pure popcorn movie, I enjoyed it, not going to win anything at the Cannes but was good escapism I found

I don't sing those parts either and I really don't like them, however this was pretty annoying. About 200 were singing it, about half probably did the chants. He was the only person kicked out. He was probably the only non white person chanting.

I was amazed, only took me two goes.

I had to put on a fake southern accent though.

Don't you have to do that anyway if you live in south Dublin?

Not really, most people can understand me ok face to face. I just speak slowly.

On the phone is difficult though.

A nice mix of pubs on Rose Street, everything from a Heavy metal bar to some nice golfy places and some more general modern bars. There is also a lovely French Restaurant there called Cafe Marlayne.
