That DNA track is a monster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

I definitely think DNA is one of the best songs I've heard in the last few years. The shift at the end is just brilliant

Love's not a bad song per say, it's just not for me. The album really starts to open up after a few listens.

Kinda like how I felt with The Life Of Pablo. Some directions that aren't for me, but lots and lots of great **** in there.

I feel the same way. Pablo has great high points with 4-5 great tracks, few average tracks and a few very poor ones. I need more listens but DAMN gets better with every listen. The first 4 are great, especially DNA. Unfortunately I think all big hip hop albums need a few pop tracks now to be released.

P.S. that Zacari guy on LOVE sure does sound like The Weeknd

Damn. is amazing, have listened to it 4 or 5 times now and absolutely love the majority of the songs on it.
Love is brilliant even if it is basically pop, stand out tracks so far for me are DNA, Element, Loyalty, Pride, Lust & Fear.
The production throughout the album is top class and Kendrick's lyrics and storytelling just can't be beaten.
This album is definitely better than Section 80 & To Pimp A Butterfly but It's too early to say if it beats Good kid Maad City for me.

the trouble with having a back catalogue as good as kendrick has is , invariably , anything he releases is immediately compared and judged against previous work rather than being enjoyed for what it is . but that's hip hop and , for me , damn is not as good as tpab and nowhere near gkmc . it's obvs brilliant but it's still tough not to feel a wee bit disappointed which is completely unfair but sure what can ya do ...

Two albums I've mulled over the past few days

    P.O.S - Chill, Dummy

I thought that this album had some great songs but terribly disjointed on my initial listen. But on focusing more on the album, my jaysus, it's amazing. Absolutely stellar.
The evolution of P.O.S is one of my most favorite things about this record, every album he consistently evolves, but here there is a step forward in evolution and a marriage of all his earlier sounds mixed in with his recent life changes and his view of the world.
I couldn't even pick a favorite track on this, it's just simply amazing and a bit of a sonic rollercoaster.....in a real good way.

Onry Ozzborn - Birth of Cupid
I'm a massive fan of Onry, I think that he has an incredible voice, vision and delivery pattern that mix well with whatever beat he is on.
What amazes me about this one is that the beats sounds similar, but are distinctively different. Also, as a bit of a lover myself, the theme of the origin of love is a wonderful concept. Again, hard to pick a favorite off this, but Birfday stood out while listening.

I'd highly recommend the 2 above albums. Next on the agenda is Kendrick. I've only heard the DNA song so far, while I like the video, I believe the album cut is slightly different so looking forward to that.

    Homeboy Sandman - Veins
New 10 track album, picks up where the last album left off. Iff you like what Boy Sand does, you'll like this.
If you've never listened to him before, you'll like this. Different range of producers on board as well which keeps it fresh.

To listen to: Kendrick and the new Altars album from Sadistik which is getting real good reviews.

I should add that I've finally listened to DAMN, a few times now, and I don't know where I stand on it. I certainly don't see it as the greatest thing ever like it's being described by many outlets after 1 listen.
There are soem great songs on it, but there is some stuff on there which I have come to call 'Drake songs' which I do not dig at all.
And there are some songs that are pretty normal or average that are well skipable.
It sounds like he was trying to make a more commercial album, or an album that is more easily digestable than his last. I like that there are more West Coast-y songs on it.

In the past his albums have taken a while for me to appreciate, I don't think I'm even there yet with TPAB. This may be the same.

There are tracks that I didn't like during my first few listens like Element, but repeat playthroughs shows it's lasting quality.
I thought "Love" was the only real kind of Drake song on it, maybe the Rihanna track too.

I went out for a 30 minute walk there and started to listen to Brother Ali - All The Beauty In This Whole Life.

By golly it's a good one and I've only got 10 tracks into it. Lyrically, Ali is not ripping mics, but he left that behind a long time ago. In the past he's come accross as preachy, he's left that behind.
From the moment the first song kicks in, there is an instant uplifting feeling, a spring in my step so to speak. The production in the first 3rd is happy and bouncy, Ant's production has stepped up a notch. The lyrics are simple and effective and uplifting.
The second third is a bit more minimilistic, more honest and reflective in a way that only Brother Ali can write and vocalise. His TSA story is deep, but yet a little chuckle by him adds a sense of relief from how deep the story is.
I'm looking forward to the last 3rd of the album, I'll be doing this on my walk tomorrow, it's where I'm getting my best listening done these days.

I listened to the rest of the Brother Ali album, it's wonderful. The final third takes elements from the first 2 thirds and mixes them together beautifully.

I don't think it will ever be a classic, but it's one that will be a joy to listen to from start to finish any time I put it on.

The few songs from that Snoop album are just alright, I'd happily listen, but they don't amaze me at all if that makes sense.

The Mount Kushmore song sounds deadly though from the snippet. West Coast bounce plus Redman = dope.

The beat in that stomps, Snoop is only alright on it.
I would have loved to hear Tray Dee do a bit of rapping on it as well, he was dope a few years back.

Snoop still a bit laid back but yes agree on the beat.

Not a 2017 release, but Lil' Ugly Mane's "Mista Thug Isolation" LP is having its 5 year anniversary this year so I got this on the wax from Boomkat record shop last week.
I f**king love this record. Its so good. On the vinyl it sounds unreal. Worth the purchase if you have a player. Limited edition but they still have copies up there. Highly Highly recomended. Digtals also up on his bandcamp

Just thought I'd post this here as it appears to have gone under the radar. There are loads of Binary Star and One B Lo fans out there and they released a new album a week or so ago.

I haven't listened to it yet, but no harm in jamming up the bandcamp link where you can give it a listen

Beat is dope, AZ is deadly, Rae is Rae, Prodigy kind of disappoints on the beat.
what does everyone think of the xxl freshman list this year?

It's a list of who potentially could be popular based on the hype they have. I hardly know any of them and of the ones I do know, I know their name rather than music. Playboi Carti and XXXtension are probably the ones that are going to blow up, but again, I hear their name rather than music.

I'd like to hear a track or 2 from each, they normally do a mixtape thingy with it but haven't seen it surface yet.

Interestingly enough, they got a few right last year :) But it doesn't hold weight for me anymore.

The only freshman I know is Kap G, and he's fantastic. Girlfriend is the best pop rap song of 2016 IMO.

This week I've listened to Gucci Manes Droptopwop. Production from Metro Boomin all the way through sounds fantastic. Three of the tracks are a little middling but it's definitely a lot stronger than the other two tapes he did since leaving prison.

Also listened to the new Chief Keef, Thot Breaker. It's pretty bloody good. He's done an RnB album. Productions absolutely daft. Doomy drill lads trying to make tracks for the ladies. Lyrics are also pretty absurd. I'd really recommend giving this a whirl even just for the novelty factor.

x is the one I am most familiar with, and his music is really a mixed bag. He has some really bad, high bass hypebeast songs, like "Look At Me" and "Suicide Pit", along with some decently lyrical songs like "King of The Dead" and "I spoke to the devil in miami and he said everything would be fine"

2 Chainz might have the best album so far this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

He's definitely varied up his flows and finessed the clanger punchlines a bit, but I not too much cos that's what makes Tittyboy 2 Chainz. Productions bananas. He's a bit much over the course of a full album for me though.

    Such flow! New Method Man!!

I've a loads of new stuff to listen to, 2Chains is in the pile. Top of the pile is Vince Staples though.
Joyner Lucas is there as well which is another guy I'm looking forward to listening to.
