The one in Castleisland has taken a fair amount of belts, so much so that the bypass had to be closed one day for extensive repairs.

This isn't a new idea. It has been in the plans all along. Here's the design map:

AFAIK, the only thing different from the design to now concerns road designations - the Burke Road is currently designated N83. The bit between the two roundabouts was supposed to be the N83 as well, and the N83 would then terminate at the N17 (Mounpotter roundabout). The N83 will now go left at the Burke Road roundabout and all the way to Galway along the old N17, so I'd guess the bit between the two roundabouts will have to be designated as an L road? Anyone got any more info on that?

The bit between the new roundabout and Mountpotter will become the N83. As per signs at the Kilmore roundabout, the existing road through Tuam will be a regional/local road.

Well that makes sense - as others have said, re-designating the old N17 through Claregalway as N83 now is daft.

It's nasty stuff for motorcyclists as is the Armco with no lower barrier. A motorcyclist can easily slide under the Armco and be sliced in two.

How many kms will it be from Annagh Hill to Gort? Am counting down each day to the end of a 50 minute each way commute!

The only thing holding it back now is the half completed roundabout at the southern end, which they seem to be in no real hurry to finish.

Actually, they've made a lot of progress on this roundabout in the last fortnight, which m17's picture, taken on Tuesday, shows.

In fairness there is a lot of work to be done there before its fully open to traffic.

Haha few kerbs and tarmac required too! But yea I know what you mean. Really looking forward to this road being finished as I commute from Cork to Donegal every week.
