Well, we all like some recognition in some form or another for one thing or another. Sometimes it's a form of reassurance, and sometimes it's because we're feeling good about ourselves. I know a lot of people who tell me about their children and take great pride in them, I don't judge them for telling me about them (even if I'm bored). I'll tell anyone who listens (IRL) about a project I did last year, because I'm so proud of it, and myself.

I think you can consider yourself financially successful if you're happy with your finances, it's a personal thing. Someone from a hugely deprived background might find the salary of a middle manager to be incredibly comfortable, but a person from a very wealthy background would feel poor by comparison, so I don't think it's fair, or accurate, to tell Eddy that he's not financially successful as it's so subjective.

As for begrudgery, I think it was probably more prevalent in the past which is what I was getting at in a previous post, and I'm sure it still exists now but it's not a universal thing. Perhaps it's more noticeable in small country communities than big cities. Both experiences are equally valid.

We ve established you dont know what his making, so theres no point trying to low ball when u havent got the facts to back it.

But whats worse, why do you care? you seem to be on a personal crusade to try and belittle what ever it is his doing or making.. let it go man

Pbear I suggest you examine why trivial things like this have an impact on how you feel about yourself. If I feel successful then so be it. You don't have to think I am. Other people's success shouldn't have this kind of impact on your self worth.

But you post a lot about your own relative rags to riches and your girlfriend's riches to rags to riches story - just as much as steddyeddy does I would say. It doesn't make sense to me that you make an issue of his public promotion when you do the same. Your continued need to define his income as "not impressive" is strange when you agreed with a definition of success as feeling you are living a fulfilling life. Why do you care so much about being impressed or unimpressed by his income?

You are successful and you say you judge people like most people do (in your opinion), fair enough. You judge steddyeddy as not successful. But there's a difference between making a judgement and needing to belittle people and your posts read as belittling, rather than simply judgemental.

It's odd to me that an alleged hedge fund manager with 2 PhDs can take someone else's success so personally. I find it all hard to believe.

How many PhDs are you doing again? Failing that you can tell me your alleged wage. I forgot it from the last thread(s). Faculty admissions after a PhD with no post doc exp either.

I think these views are prevalent in society but theyre just more open about them online, as there are negative social repercussions involved with voicing prejudiced opinions like that in real life

Well, I don't follow either of you around on boards, but I've seen your story as much as his. As I said - relative rags to riches, I know you've never said you were poor or working class. Perhaps you just happen to pop up in the threads I read.

off topic/ That's not very scientific! The universe unfolds blindly, deterministically and without regard for our happiness! And supposed randomness is just unmeasurable determinism. Many of us are predetermined to suffer terrible futures, including scenarios where we don't end up reaching our goals even though we try our best, although being predetermined isn't the same thing as being preordained which would suggest it is anything personal on the universes part when your life doesn't unfold the way you would have liked best, which it isn't.

When you're writing a science paper always write the results first. Then change the objectives or goals as needed ;). Applies to life too.

I think a number of the posters on this thread would benefit from practicing mindfulness. There is an awful lot of pent up anger and bitterness.

    I suggest a guided loving-kindness session.
