On the other side of this - you can have threads which touch on poster's personal lives - traumas, family histories etc. - poster's relating personal tragedies and experiences in their lives. They can express their inner feelings and emotions with the relative anonymity of the internet - something they might not do in other situations - and it's surprising how many posters will chime in with empathy and sympathy.

And the amount that chime in to tell them how wrong they are.

I don't think it's just Boards, more an Internet phenomena of people being able to express views about other people without the consequences that could befall them should they express those same views in a situation where merely logging out wouldn't be an escape route open to them.

Now that doesn't necessarily mean I think that the views being expressed online are not genuinely held ones, as mostly I'd say they are, but humans are social creatures and so remaining on good terms with our friends, family and work colleagues is a high priority for us and so folk will tend to edit themselves in such circumstances as a result out of fear of the possible ramifications if they did not.

Used to be you had to get someone drunk to find out what they truly think about others but now you just need to find out what their username is on the net. There's a famous quote by John Wooden that "The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching" and if I may paraphrase that I think that 'The true opinions a man holds are the one's he posts when he thinks nobody he knows will read them'.

Of course there are some salt of the Earth individuals like myself who express the same views offline as we do online... but we're a rare breed, a rare breed indeed.

off topic/ That's not very scientific! .... And supposed randomness is just unmeasurable determinism. ...
This is also not scientifically correct, quantum mechanical randomness is genuine, not due to unknowns. The universe is not deterministic.

    I'm very much like this.

A lot of people who seem to almost change personality based on who they're interacting with or the situation they're in. I get why - but it feels fake as hell to me. I'm pretty much the same regardless of what environment I'm in, be it online or in person. I have the same opinions, the same values, and I'm not shy about having honest and direct conversations.

Now, whether that's a good or a bad thing is debatable. Sometimes it's wiser to hold your tongue!

I think it's clever and a skill. If you've read Game of Thrones, the character Petyr was exceptionally good at that. Someone I know is very adept at adjusting his mannerisms and opinions when he's talking to different people.
It's also slyness and you might never really know the 'real' person.

I don't think many on here have an issue with people who are less well off.

I think the big deal is more about the 'give a man a fish' mentality of the state machinery designed to addressed those in struggling positions. We keep hearing about reform but what was intended as a safety net is continually turned into a sickbed. It just continues to be tolerated.

PRSI and USC payers, those whose money is redistributed through welfare schemes, have every right to call out that on fora such as boards. It doesn't make those people any less pleasant or render them extreme OP.

I don't have an issue with them.

I'd just rather not be paying for them.

If they paid for themselves, Id nothing them, if they gave me a few quid I'd think they were great.

Then they cant. Not my problem.

I was supposed to do some gardening this weekend but I've f*cked up my back at training.

I don't expect someone else to do it for me.

There's a strong element of looking down on other people present on these pages. Be the targets poor people, single mothers or working class people as they put it. The thing is I rarely rarely hear those views among real people. Are more people than I think judgmental or does Boards bring out the extremes in society?

Boards vocalises the minority view. They generally can't/ won't air their views in public to other people, so vent behind an anonymous username. All you have to do is look at the amount of southern unionists/partitionists on the politics forum or politics/history related threads in after hours. If an outsider was looking in, they'd surely come to the conclusion that the south of Ireland wants to join the commonwealth, or even the UK once more. Boards doesn't give a good representation of the sentiment in the country, particularly when it comes to history and politics

    Really? I'd consider that deceitful.

It is deceitful. You'd never know where you stand with a person like that. I didn't say it was nice :)
