Possibly the best 8 in the top 14 this year.

Is he playing 8? I thought he moved to lock when he went over there.
Seems like there's some shenanigans with his proposed move back to England too.

3 6N championships, 2 grand slams, world cup semi final. Awful ineptitude that.

None of it since 2013 though (well, 2012 under Gatland). Ineptitude would be a strong word but his recent record with Wales really is nothing to boast about.

As far as playing against SH teams he's been pretty inept. Wales had a great team under him and as said they were winning 6 nations but he was clueless against SH teams. Scotland managed more against the same teams with much less chances and much less resources and talent.

The Lions win was great but its far from proof of his coaching ability. Australia were absolutely terrible that year and still almost won it.

And then he talks nonsense about Scottish players not being suited because they need to win away from home in the SH.

Greig Laidlaw comes on for Gloucester in the semi vs La Rochelle. Your Lion series win starts here.

Just in case anyone is thinking of it my advice is to not watch any footage of the 05 tour, it'll just make you angry. Very angry

Especially at Geordan Murphy and Gavin Henson

    Was watching some earlier. Horrendous.

Has there been another Lion who came from such obscurity and vanished back into it again as quickly as Ollie Smith?

What happened with Henson and Murphy ?

I mentioned him before on here and I believe someone mentioned that he might have been picked on the back of BOD's recommendation.

A quick google indicated he retired after a horrific injury:
The knee injury he sustained was not your typical ‘knock’.

He both fractured and dislocated the joint. The extra damage to the bones and ligaments around that was horrific.

He spent six months on crutches, five months with ice strapped to his knee and the equivalent of 37 days solid in a movement-enhancing Continuous Passive Motion machine.

Smith fought it for 12 months and then gave in to nature.

Geordan Murphy was jumping out of the way of people instead of tackling on that tour.

I probably shouldn't be so harsh on Henson as he shouldn't really have been picked but he played very pants when he was for the test team.

I can't remember but I thought there used to be this romantic idea of picking one non capped guy, or barely capped, and bringing him on tour. Ollie Smith was, I think, Woodward's idea of that guy.

Wales have an abysmal record against SH teams. With 3 wins (2 x SA in 2016 and 2014. 1 x Aus in 2008) in about 40 games over the last 10 years and all 3 home games. Matched by even Scotland who have played half the amount of games against the same opposition.

They were well beaten within 50 minutes in all three tests against NZ the last time they went down there iirc. Picking up consolation tries at the death to pretty up the scoreboard.

Gatland of course is blind to his own ineptitude as the Welsh coach though.

"well beaten within 50 minutes in all 3 tests ...." ...... you either haven't watched test 1 & 2 ..... or more likely know nothing about the game!

One thing I'll point out that might skew things is that Farrell has been kicking goals consistently since he was a teenager. He's obviously a much better kicker now. Sexton wasn't really kicking in the Contepomi days was he? Hence why he's like 5 years older but hasn't kicked as many.

They're all quality kickers, realistically it's between Farrell and Sexton. Jonny just has that stigma of missing the odd very important kick, maybe it's unfair but people remember the big ones.

Would be interesting if you removed all the kicks HP attempts from within the arc where Sexton & Farrell do not go for goal .....what would the %'s look like then?

Anybody who saw HP kicking against France this year in the 6N wouldn't be putting him behind Sexton & Farrell in pure goal kicking ability.

Sorry. They lasted 60 minutes before being put away in the first test. 50 in the second before NAZ ran in 5 tries in 20 minutes. And then were hammered completely in the last test.

Strangely enough Welsh fans at the time seemed happy and we're already brainwashing themselves into thinking it was a good tour !

Ollie Smith was included on the backing of BOD after he tore Leinster up in the 2005 HEC quarter final. He was only 22 when called up to the Lions.

The biggest impact on him supposedly was the death of his father though who he was extremely close to. He lost his way and never really got his career back on track and injuries began to take their toll.

I thought it was the Lions.

Eric Miller, Simon Taylor, Smith, and Keith Earls only had a cap or two at the most when they were called to tour with the Lions

The Irish lads will have to check Ringrose in with their luggage.

The Barbarians always include an uncapped player, I don't think there's any real convention for the Lions, although Kyle Sinckler isn't far off it with 8 caps and no starts...

The last uncapped Lion was Will Greenwood in 1997.

Can you imagine if the motorbike learner doing 200 kmph was also Furlong.

That is a great headline in fairness

Furlong is, in fact, the New Ross.

It's because the suggestion is not thought out to begin with. SRU would never do anything to jeopardise their stake with the Lions and you can't seriously expect any player to withdraw from the squad and lose out on their salary.

If Ireland had only 5 picks would you feel still feel the same. I could name 5 upcoming lions who could easily be replaced by scots.
We must all be honest and say the lions squad is unfair and because of this karma is coming in June.
The 2 scots named must be delighted but also uncomfortable with how their teammates and friends have been treated.

I think the Lions will win 2 of the games against the Super Rugby sides, assuming the entirety of the Hurricanes backs are missing for national duty, plus maybe the NZ Maori game and the Heartlands match.

Laidlaw is the only one I can think of. Their win against us relied on us playing badly. You can't count on NZ playing badly (not that I think Gatland will win anyway but the answer is not more Scots).

Am I the only one thinking €2.20 is a serious price for the New Ross Standard?!
