    Wondering about the fiber termination at the home.

    Is there a wall mounted box outside?

    Is it a direct fiber run all the way to the router?

    What router are Eir providing for FTTH?

    I think the sign up deals are across the board (4-6 months discounted then 12 months normal price). The cash back seems to be related to moving from another supplier so that might be something the sales agent has as a bonus to temp you out of the contract, but I am sure if you asked the tele sales people they would be able to offer similar.

    One of the yellow lines in Thomastown Kilkenny on the inistioge rd, has been run with fibre...First live ftth is sp/sum '18...Don't know how long its been done..splice boxes an all

    if it's down for going live a year from now and the fiber and splitter box's already on the road, then it has to be going live much sooner than Spring/Summer 2018.

    just did another speedtest to test late at night, lowest ping results yet.

    It's a life-changing experience.

    A neighbour of mine only gets 3 meg on a good day and they are upgrading from that to the full 1000 this week. They've had a lifetime of disconnections, timeouts and high pings so are really looking forward to have a fast and stable connection for the first time in their lives.

    Ah those speeds and that ping... I tried a bit of gaming yesterday for the first time in a long time as my speed increased a bit recently. Gaming was still poor :( Currenty with a WISP and speeds ranging from 1-12MB. The blue/yellow lines go past us and stop about 2 houses up. Down for "Autumn 2018", well the town that we will be fed the fiber from is down for that. Quite a while away but just thankful we're on the rollout at all!

    Is the attic of a bungalow now out of bounds for the KN install tech?

    It would make things so easy. The old copper (not used anymore) is coming in through the gable into the attic. Would make perfect sense for the fibre. No drilling, no messy terminations in the hallway.

    Power available and a simple 2m CAT5 drop down to room where the LAN switch is.

    Otherwise it's across eves, through porch and then through front door.

    Could I accept the fiber in attic from KN tech outside at gable and run the short distance across attic?

    Seems to depend on the installer.
    I'll be hoping for a similar setup - at least it's one of my two options.
    Doing as much as you can in advance seems to be the thing to do.

    I emailed KN about any restrictions they have in installation but they just fobbed me off with "contact tv your provider"

    At least one other poster here has run the fibre through the attic himself with the KN installer doing the outside bit and the final connection.

    I presume it's not physically possible to have a ping of less than 1 ms is it?

    During my installation I dealt with 2 different technicians, both were willing to install in the attic. The technician who did the actual install said that he was only supposed to install "up to 1m inside the dwelling". He took a look in the attic and said that as long as I would pull the fibre from the eaves of the roof to the top of the attic stairs then he would install where I had the power etc. From other posters and from people getting installations around me, it does seem to depend on the technician that you get.

    This was my installation which was placed at the top of the Stira stairs. It was approximately 3m from the eaves to this location. Like I said the technician was willing to give me a bit of leeway if i did the donkey work with the fibre.

    Wow...don't think I've ever seen 1 ms ping before.

    @Gonzo, can I ask what deal you took with eir? Was it the 12 month 300mb contract? You mentioned you didn't take the phone option, so how much are you paying? I'm looking for something similar.

    I took the standalone broadband 300mb. contract is 12 months. the first 4 months is 45 per month and the remaining 8 months is 63 a month, so in total 684 euros for a whole year. When the contract is up the price rises to 65 per month making it 780 euros for Year 2.

    I was paying 55 per month for 8 down and 0.5 up.

    my 12 month contract will be up mid April 2018. By then I hope things will be even more interesting. Hopefully Eir will have a better FUP by then or different FTTH plans. If Eir were to remove the FUP completely I would run and order the 1000 without a second of thought.

    The ping looks great on speedtest and dos but in reality in-game pings are more like 20-30ms depending on where you connect and what game you are playing.

    Thanks Gonzo! I might go for that contract. I was thinking of getting the TV as well, but may just keep Sky for the year and then decide.

    for TV I prefer to stay with Sky. The most watched channels in our house like Sky Atlantic, Viceland, ITV (other channels), Sky One and Sky News are not on Eir.

    If you do go with Eir for TV, keep the dish, there are alot of FTA channels which are not available through Eir.

    yep, a cancelled Sky account you can still get all the FTA channels, you just can't record, rewind etc. Take your viewing card out and see what channels you get. You basically get BBC's, Channel 4 and their other stations like e4, film4.

    Here is the full list of stuff you get on a dish without a subscription. Some channels may need to be manually added to other channels.

    Yes it is, just in general, ICMP (ping) software usually measures in milliseconds.

    speedtest and dos pings are accurate but don't reflect real world gaming pings. The majority of Irish gamers would play on servers that are based in the UK and continental Europe as Ireland hosts very few gaming servers unfortunately.

    those pings are good enough for the majority, Wouldn't really effect MMO's but people who take their first person shooters and beat em up's seriously online may want lower alright.

    It is. Thankfully since then a local WISP was set up and this is my usually speed test now.

    The package is 15/2 for EUR35 a month which isn't bad I suppose.


    Also, if I need to download anything quickly, I have the new vodafone x offer with 20GB per weekend and 5GB over the 5 weekdays to get me through. Somehow, I am able to get this speed test living in the middle of knowhere in the countryside at any time of day!

    The yellow lines go by my house but I am not covered by eir according to my eircode on their site and on the NBP map. My neighbour and I are the only two on the road not covered out of about 40 houses. We both have lanes with the house about 60m down :( I'm happy enough with what I have at the moment though.
