Today: wanted to get a bit of a tempo run in again today given the crap effort on Thursday.

The kids had a swimming lesson in Salthill so I'd an hour to get this done, the rain had stopped and yesterday's floods had cleared up well.

Had hoped to get 6 miles done around 6.30-6.40 pace but very quickly realised the legs are still dead and that pace was unrealistic so I decided to drop it down to MP.

Got a mile warm up and then laboured through 6 miles @ 6.45

Lot of work still to do.

    7 miles for the day.

Today: still trying to work myself back into it so I decided to dial back the long run today to 14/15 miles. It's frustrating but I can still feel the stiffness and heaviness in the legs a full week after the skiing!

Decided to try a completely new route to provide a bit of distraction, picked a nice scenic route on isolated roads near the sea. Nice and fresh out there today but at least I avoided the worst of the rain.

The kids are off sweets for lent so I'm learning how to make rice crispy buns!!

    15.2 miles @ 7.44

Mon & Tues: fighting a sore throat and some mean looking blisters on the arch of my foot so took the soft option and did nothing. The new orthotics are definitely helping with the foot and ankle issues but they are taking a long time to break in.

Wed: lovely morning for a run, headed up over Seanadh Pheistin for 7 easy miles.

Thur: headed into town to get my hair cut today, I've been going to the same barber now for over a quarter of a century and the experience follows a hallowed ritual and routine.

    - I open the door and nod at him, he nods back, indicating that I can sit in the chair or take a seat on the waiting bench.

    - when it's my turn he wraps my shoulders in the comforting warmth of a hairy towel. It's always red and always smells the same.

    - he puts his two hands on my shoulders and asks "usual". I either nod in the mirror or give a "yep".

    - he starts cutting, there is absolutely no talk for at least the first two minutes.

    - any talk is tightly ring fenced to sport and absolutely nothing else, sentences are short and to the point, responses should be concise, preferably of the "yeah" or "no" kind.

    - he finishes quickly, does a bit of auld man ear and neck hair tidying up, shakes the towel of hair half onto the floor and half onto me.

    - "how's zat", "fine"

    - I fish some notes outta my pocket and say "keep the change", he responds with a "Ta" and I brush the hairs off myself and leave.

I don't know his name, he doesn't know mine and that's the way we like it, it's the routine.

Today, I opened the door and nodded...at a woman, I almost fell through the pane of glass I got so startled. "Come in come in" she says, "take a seat there's a paper there (I know where the f'ing papers are, they've been in the same place for 25 years!) and I'll be with you in a minute. I shudda ran when I had the chance!

    - her, "how are you today?" as she leads me into the chair. Non committal grunt from me.
    - "is the chair height ok", are you freaking kidding me does this chair even move
    - "what would you like?" O mother of god, a haircut, I'm hardly here for a back sac and crack wax.
    - "are you working", "yes" says I praying she'll stop talking and start cutting.
    - she asked me if I wanted it "layered", at this stage I'd have bolted but she'd started. Layered, I'm not a wedding cake, please stop talking and cut my feckin hair!
    - she then committed a cardinal sin by asking me where I was working and did I live locally.
    - she continually tried to engage me in conversation of a personal nature, even telling me where she had gone on holidays.

Finally she squirted talcum powder on my neck!

I feel violated and haven't been right all day, my hairs in a right state too, kept running my fingers through my hair on a 5 mile easy run.

Funniest thing I've read in ages, did you at least find out what happened to your regular barber.

Brilliant! 25 years and you don't know his name. Until I was about 30 I only ever had my hair cut by men with the same name, 3 generations all called John McKenna. Now 'young' John has taken over the business and has women working with him, I don't know their names.

Have you see the Coen brothers movie 'The Man who wasn't There'? Excellent observations about the interaction between barber and client. Recommended.

Don't know Kennyg, but if some unfortunate mishap has befallen him that precludes him from returning I'm gonna be a long haired OAP!

    Hey P,

The surname is over the door and his father used to work there too but I haven't the faintest idea what his name is, and 25 years later it's a bit late to be asking!

Never seen that movie but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Good barber scene in Gran Torino too. Yer man Clint has had some memorable barber shop scenes, really.

You should've told her you're a tax inspector, that always kills the chitchat!

I'm laughing away here to myself on the dart at your haircut adventures ..... so funny. Didn't you know going to the hairdressers is like confession for us women !!! :) aren't you lucky you don't get your colour done and sit there for 2 hours !!

Had to change barbers recently myself. The old guy had the perfect mix of silence and non-committal banter, with personal questions rarely asked ("Off today?" would be about the height of it, if it was a midweek visit). I had to very reluctantly start looking elsewhere because the poor man's hands were getting very shaky and he liked to keep everything very sharp. Still feel guilty if I pass him on the street, and look over my shoulder when sneaking into the new place, where the barbers are younger and chattier, but less likely to take my ear off.

    It's a big thing, that man-barber relationship. :)

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: exactly why I do my own colour :D I too had to change hairdressers recently, it's hugely traumatic!. I'm with the lads on this, the quieter and quicker the better. My new one is a bloke, he's a bit chattier than my last (girl) but the ole 'I'm on my lunch break' usually keeps things efficiently speedy.

p.s. hope the throat & foot are on the mend C!

Fuppin' 'ell, as we never said in Cork, you're doing ok if you're up to 16 miles. Most I ever did was 14 I think (before one of my glorious failures).

Maybe that's why I've had so many glorious failures!

I'm trying the brute force route to sub 3 for a month or two.

Next run I'll try 20 @ mp and if I'm faltering I'll stop at 20, if I feel ok I'll push on.

Someone christened it the "thickness" approach and it's probably unusual but with my background I know I can grind out marathons, just need to get used to the pace!!

Obviously you are being 'self coached' at this stage :)

Obviously you are being 'self coached' at this stage :)

Can't commit to a formal program at the moment A, so I'm just trying to get one session a week in, interspersed with easy runs and a long run (with MP miles on occasions).

Hoping to be able to get back on one of Ecolis programs soon.

You're stressing me. I completely agree to the concept of getting mind and body used to MP but 16 miles at this stage !!!??? If Cork is indeed your next target race, it's about 12 weeks away. Surely that's a run for about 4 weeks out from your target race after a gradual weekly build up. I'm a bit baffled. Although then again, maybe you are targeting Manchester?

BTW you're obviously in great nick if you managed the 16 mile MP run. Just don't peak too soon.

PS. When you can commit to a program, maybe consider the Hanson plan, apparently suited for us auld lads. I'll let you know in 6 weeks if it works!

Some going, Lemon. I couldn't believe when you just chucked that in, 16 miles at 6:49 ffs. I did 14 x 7 min miles at the weekend and was shagged. And I'm a fit young fella. Looks like pigheadedness might get you where science failed. Good luck.

Thur: 4 miles easy around Dangan after work, had planned on 8 but had some stomach issues so happily cut it short.

Today: decided to try a session, 8 x 1k at around 10k pace. Atrocious weather out there this morning so I kept putting it off. It was after lunch by the time I got out. Did a couple of miles warm up over Seanadh Pheistin in lashing rain and gale like winds. Picked a flattish section to do the reps out and back. Was very tired after 6 reps and almost finished up but forced myself to finish. The reps into the wind were very tough and I got very cold on the cool down miles.

Good effort and happy to have it done.

    Reps: time

    1. 3.53
    2. 4.08
    3. 3.48
    4. 4.07
    5. 3.43
    6. 4.08
    7. 3.46
    8. 4.12

    9 miles for the day

Today: no chance to get a long run in tomorrow so it was today or bust and it didn't really suit me at all and the weather was ****e. Was feeling tired and lethargic so I decided to do a 3 mile loop from the house just in case I seized up and had to bail early.

Found this mentally and physically tough and passing close by the house after every 3 mile loop was enticement to call it a day. After every loop I said I'd finish on the next one but slowly plodded on. Found the last rep very hard and my sorry ass was dragging along the tar.

Happy to have it done and I'll take it handy over the next couple of days.

Sunday: was tired and knee a bit stiff so I took a rest day rather than the planned 4 mile nursing home special.

Monday: was in UK for work and was at a meeting and staying overnight in Wentworth golf club. Don't get the attraction for golf at all and the place was very uppity, no jeans, no mobile phones, no loud conversations....

Thankfully I didn't need a dinner jacket for the 4 mile nursing home special I did in the gym.

Tuesday: Long day and was travelling back so I took another rest day.

Wednesday: decided to try a small session, was staying beside Santry park so I went over to the park and did 3 x 2 miles at HM pace off 2 mins recovery. Cold and rainy and the knee took a while to loosen up so I started this in poor form but gradually got into it. First mile of each rep was done a little too fast and as a result the second mile was a bit slower. Happy to have it done.

    2 mile reps average:

    1. 6.19
    2. 6.18
    3. 6.22

Came across this class cover of this legendary song, these guys look like some of the locals out my direction :)

Surely you are ready for a race? Any target? Not many about doing that type of run, strike while the irons hot.
