As far as cousins ins concerned a Washington beat writer is saying there is no deal done and last nights rumour is untrue...

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2017/03/07/redskins-show-little-early-activity-as-nfl-free-agency-begins/?utm_term=.c7cfdd11bdc2
    There’s no Kirk Cousins-to-the-Niners deal

Not sure how it picked up steam, but a source said there's no truth to a Kirk Cousins-49ers trade being "all but done." #Redskins

    — Master Tesfatsion (@MasterTes) March 8, 2017

If you were holding your breath, you can stop now. This doesn’t mean Cousins will not be traded, however and Washington could weigh his trade value throughout the offseason, even as it attempts to get him under a long-term contract.

Rappaport now saying swapping 1st rounders this year and the Redskins get the 49ers 1st pick next year. Is he reliable as a reporter?

Can you post the source for this as a quick google isn't showing me any recent article sourcing him since the talk of a 3 way trade?

The only mentions I see of Cousins on his twitter recently is where he said Silver was a strong source when he said he would likely end up in the 49ers this year or next. Regarding 49ers the only mentions related to a QB on his twitter is saying they have an interest in Hoyer

Was thinking something was up as I had a trawl through his tweets, but sometimes he says things on NFL network that he doesn't put up on Twitter!

They aren't cutting him as the cap hit is high. They can hold him until a team needs a QB (someone could get injured like Teddy B and they gave up a lot to get Bradford) or draft day teams look to move up or down (and Romo could be capital in any deal)

We've no back up/ third QB at present so McCowan is a separate deal.

Looks like they are cutting him.

Nice to see some mutual respect in the game.

yeah agree, while Jerry is a fruit loop, i think he's doing right by Romo here

looks like it alright, using June 1 designation so we'll get a lot of money back on cap to sign our draft class.

I guess he is doing right, but as always, he's also doing right by himself.

The Jets done the same with Marshall. They'd been looking for a trade partner but he requested to be released, so he can choose where to go. He wants a ring. I was happy the Jets didnt leverage a legend to get a 7th rounder

He's on the hook for all the money anyway so thats just semantics, he's doing right by Romo which is good in this day and age of money is all powerful especially in the NFL.

Romo's most likely to Denver, could be an interesting season ahead.

Assuming he goes to another NFL team, will Romo be paid by two teams this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

If he does go to Denver it'll be interesting to see if anyone moves in for Siemian.

Apparently yes, was unsure of that myself. He's guaranteed 14 from the cowboys and could well get that from whoever he signs for too.

    Nice problem if your tony

OK, I have ignored this until now.....but why not hang on to him so? Dak could get hurt.

The answer must be that they are saving something by cutting him, but how much?

Edit, just saw they save $5.1mm in cap space by cutting him.

They will surely pay that on a decent backup. This makes no sense to me.

This is why teams try to get 'offset' money into contracts which is what held up Joey Bosa signing his rookie deal. It basically protects the teams from having to pay a guy who they cut and is now playing for someone else.

Revis is guaranteed a bunch of cash from the Jets this year but because, I think, $6m of it can be offset under his contract anyone who signs him effectively has to pay more $6m before Revis sees a cent more than he'd earn sitting at home and anything up to that $6m level just reduces what the Jets have to pay out.

Romo wants to play and Dallas want to have a season where every time they lose a game they aren't asked if Garrett is considering benching Dak for Romo. If Romo was genuinely willing to be backup then it makes a degree of sense to keep him around but if he wants to start elsewhere then its better for all parties to move on.

OK, well if that is the case, Beefy, they are being very nice to Romo.

He signed that contract, he will get the money. Tough. Surprised Jerry is doing this.

I'm not really surprised they are releasing him for a number of reasons but number 1 in my mind is that if it genuinely came down to a Quarter back competition for the job in Dallas ,Romo could and in my opinion probably would win it and I dont think Garrett or Jones wants that. Could cause division in the team and it's a better case to just let him walk after all he's done for the team.

    100% this.
Romo if given the chance could win the job back
If he does so you could ruin the confidence that was built by Dak and in a year you're looking for another franchise QB

So he goes to the Giants who have 1 playoff appearance in the last 5 years? I'm sure he could have gone to a genuine contender (you can quote me on this if the Giants go deep in the playoffs next year :D) but he seemed to want to stay in NY.

To be fair, I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to minimise disruption but I'm always wary of players who claim they want a ring when it's probably not their only motivation. I'd see someone like Chris Long as a real ring-chaser - Marshall's salary will supposedly drop from 7.5m (cap space freed by the Jets) to 6m. For comparison, Long went from averaging over 10m a year to less than 2.5m. If Marshall was willing to do a 1 year deal for that sort of money I'm sure he could have picked any team in the league.

The Giants will contend next year and Marshall is quality he will make them better and deserves at least $6m a year given his continuous production.

Only thing I was suprised by was that Bellicheck didnt make a run at him.

A proven veteran at QB. One of the best WR cores in the league. A great defence. If they can address the O Line, I cant see why this team wouldnt go far in 2017

I say this with respect and its likely to bite me an d my cowboys in the butt but..

A proven QB is a stretch. Eli has some poor numbers and has 14,14 and 16 interceptions and passer rating of 92.1, 93.6 and 86 in his last three years. I know he's gone over 4,000 yards in each season but is that more to do with his receivers than his actual ability. When we talk about franchise and elite QB's he's not really mention in the conversation.

Now as you if they improve the O-line it gives him a much better shot at being a better QB.

I'm not sure how far they go, as getting out of the NFC east could be difficult. As a cowboys fan i wouldn't be confident right now of doing that without some serious upgrades on our own team. But that all makes for an intruiging conference ;)

Best division out there IMO at the moment and definitely one of the most competitive.

The Giants O Line caused alot of Eli's problems but he is definitely in decline I would agree there.

If the Eagles improve like they should this year is a minefield for that division.

I agree that the team looks decent on paper, but I'd argue that there is a difference between a team that could go far and a team that expects to be in their conference game at a minimum. I'd put the Giants below the Pats, Packers, Seahawks and Steelers if I was asked (at an early stage of the offseason) to name contenders.

Given what Marshall can bring to the table I think he'd have a better chance of a ring with half a dozen other teams (add in the Cowboys and maybe the Raiders as up and coming contenders). I'm not saying the Giants are bad, I'm just pointing out that wanting to win a ring was only a part of his decision making process and I would argue that it wasn't the number one priority.

To be fair, if the Giants offensive line is even average, they would have to be considered contenders.

Then again, it doesn't really matter when its the Giants. See the 2011 rankings.

31st ranked Offensive Line, 32nd in Rushing, 29th ranked Defense. Eli just carried the team that year.
