This is great news. Unfortunately it's true that the general public doesn't pick up on features until apple launches something similar. In a couple of weeks this should be much more widespread and less hassle. Looking forward to using Android Pay again without having an argument at half the transactions.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. It is only for Ulster bank customers I think that's a reasonably small market share (although concentrated in cities). I also have a feeling that Ulster bank's customers are usually of a slightly older demographic, though I am not 100% on that. I also could be wrong, but IIRC Ulster bank customers didn't have contactless cards before. So that may either push them to phones, or make them reluctant.

Anyway, long story short, at the moment only three groups of people have access to mobile tap and pay without boon.

    AIB Android customers
    Apple Ulster Bank customers
    Any KBC customer

That could still be less than 20% of the Irish market.

I would be prepared for the "your phone does not look like an iPhone" discussion.

KBC seams to be on the forefront with Apple/Android Pay while the other banks seam to be either split on the front (Ulster/AIB) or totally ignoring it (Permanent).

Good is that boon. is now available both on Android and Apple which makes it easier for those who want to use their phone but don't bank with one of the participating banks.

I'm going to continue using boon. on my Android, I like the fact that it's a prepaid wallet which requires my PIN every single time on the device and even for higher payments I don't need to enter anything on the shops terminal which makes it secure but also easy to use.

But it's surprising that Ireland is getting Android/Apple pay before Germany, sure they are behind in payment technology and the banking system is not easy to move, but it's surprising.

I know a lot of German customers who now are using boon. in the Irish variant to get Android/Apple Pay instead of the French variant as it's easier with English than French.

I agree with you that only a small segment of the population has direct access (without workaround) to the payment method.

But the improvement is possibly going to be in the shops knowledge because of the propaganda machine that the church of apple is going to deploy to ensure that their followers have a smooth experience. Because let's face it, apple is good at that.

    What? I am not old.

    Am I? :(

I only got my UB contactless card in the last couple of months, so they are way behind the curve, as usual.

In other news, I went to my local SuperValu at the weekend, bought a few small items. The place was absolutely jam packed. I went to the till, there was an older lady serving who looked particularly stressed out.I was going to whip out my phone, but I just said f**k it, why bother? It's just going to be hassle, I know it. So I paid with cash.

Just encountered a few apple fanboys geeking out because they could use their phones to pay. I wanted to say I've been able to do that for a while now, but decided against it.

Hopefully apples launch and the advertising campaign behind it will push the rest of the banks into getting on board.

    That's my hope too.

People can say 'Well Android already did it', but it will take a giant like Apple to push other banks to adopt it.

Back in Supervalu this morning, things were quiet, so I thought id try two things - the Supervalu loyalty app and Android Pay.

The barcode on the screen of the phone wouldn't scan and the payment terminal said "Unsupported card".

Not a successful morning from a technological perspective.

Was your screen brightness at full for the scan? Subway never scans my phone unless I have the brightness right up.

Probably not. Though I thought the app sets the brightness up to full anyway? Tried it in the gym with my membership card and the same thing happened. Though I had an e-ticket when I was on a train in Germany recently and it scanned fine.

I'm wondering about the Android Pay - would the fact that my phone was bought in the UAE (Note 5) have anything to do with why 2 out of 2 attempts have failed? I'm using an AIB card, with an Irish address.

Managed to get past the "See device for instructions" message which happens to me occasionally in Aldi. Previously my phone sometimes asked me to enter my pin while it was unlocked for amounts over €30. When I lifted my phone up to put in the pin both app and terminal froze. Yesterday I kept the phone and terminal in close proximity while entering the pin and it was fine. Might just be a coincidence.

Was up in NI yesterday and used it to pay in a cafe. The transaction went through OK, but didn't appear in my history. I didn't have roaming data enabled, so wondered if that was it, so connected to the cafe's free WiFi and it appeared, albeit with quite a delay. Thought that was a bit strange to be honest.

Total cop out. They're obliged to provide you with a receipt if you ask for one for any form of payment.

I think though that the default behaviour for some machines has changed so that contactless does not automatically issue receipt, but they can obviously give you one if needed.

surely the assumption is your not giving the card for the operator to tap.

I read it as they refused to give a receipt when it was requested, using the machine not printing one automatically as an excuse. I may be wrong.

Tried to use it in the Gate cinema in Cork last night. Older Verifone terminal let out a continuous beep and rebooted with an error message. Was stuck for a few minutes with a huge queue behind me... The staff were all apologetic and said it happens whenever someone uses their phone. I'll make a note not to use it there until they update their terminals...

I find myself using it more and more often now than actually using my card. One thing that I cannot get my no head around though, is the app not functioning without a screen lock in place.

What's that all about, if you can use it without unlocking the phone anyway:confused:

Can you add an AIB click credit card and use it? I added mine the other day, but it got declined on tap and pay today, so I had to get the card out and insert it.

Has been working fine with my click card.

Yep, I've been using my click card since December. Quite handy, as the click itself isn't contactless.

As for the receipt issue, I was working in a place last week with a new card machine and was unable to get a customer copy, no matter what I tried.
The elavon that I normally use has the option not to print a customer receipt if they don't want it which is fine. This new verifone however just wouldn't let me.

How do you guys use it so much, tried in Nespresso in Arnotts and they kept telling me phones dont work. I told them I dont have a card and just tapped it, and if course it worked. Such a pain always discussing.

I just keep it in my hand and say I want to pay by contactless. I have it tapped by the time they realise I didn't mean card.
