I didn't get to do a major test but I plugged my Nexus 6P charger into the Switch and, during the 3 minutes of play it did charge by a percentage point, not long enough to see if anything burst into flames, rotted into a corrupt pile of viscera or any other dysfunction as a result of the wrong USB-C charger in the wrong port!

The power the thing pumps out is not as high as that of the official PSU, but these things are a little more complicated, the system is probably drawing more on the PSU during docked play than during on the go or during charging, either way it appears to charge itself beyond what it's burning through while plugged into the 6P charger, meaning we've saved ourselves the price of a 2nd charger and space in our man-bag.
It also means we can make faces at sad lonely iPhone owners who can't charge the the Switch at all, ha, smug gits deserve it!

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to hate a product, I mean, it can't have hurt anyone in a meaningful way, so why hate?
I think, at it's root, it's like football supporters, somehow is a Chelsea fan and they "hate" Man U because... well because they love Chelsea!
PlayStation owners, Xbox owners, some become so invested in their purchase that they latch onto the same viewpoint, hating the others for no real reason aside from an Us and Them scenario.
    Tribalism at its best.
Nintendo has been no stranger, with their owners facing off against Sega owners on schoolyards world wide throughout the 90s, as Atari and Amiga owners did in the late 80s and Spectrum and C64 owners did before that.

But Nintendo have become that third group that thing the other pair of fans can agree on, laying on the hate on that "kids" console, two groups of people who imagine that sitting in their home, pretending to be a racing driver or soldier is somehow less "childish" than playing Super Mario 3D World.

Every company innovates, tries to market that something that makes their products the ones to own, but the PS4 and XBOne have so little in difference that it generates... indifference.
Nintendo have, for good or ill, brought actual innovation to their consoles and always have, sometimes this is a thing that worked out, dpads, analogue stick, portable touchscreen, portable no glasses 3D, and more occasionally it has not, monochrome 3D at home, the WiiU.
And even the people who build and market the PS4 and XBOne acknowledge, the world be a much duller place without Nintendo hardware in it.
I grew up with the sega mega drive and progressed from there to ps1 and have always since been a ps gamer. I did but the wii and still play twilight princess skyward sword and mario kart and both mario Galaxy games on it with my son. I honestly think that too many editions of cod and battlefield and all the copycats of those games has caused the ps world to become a bit stale and I find there's not much on there that I can play with a 6 year old that will hold both mins and his interest.

IMO the landscape is perfect for Nintendo to claw back massive market share with the switch. It's a truly great concept and if supported properly will be a massive seller. I can't wait to get my hands on it and have botw on the go with the option of multiplayer splatoon and mk when and where I like and I know my young will love it and I'll love playing it with him. They need to pull out all the stops to make sure this console thrives. The alternative is just too dull at the moment

Where? Nickelodeon, Disney? Haven't seen any on terrestrial or the UK channels. Said a few days ago that Horizon is everywhere and on all the time. Nintendo have always been bad at advertising(they're stingy), it was something I wanted and hoped to see them change.

The switch and two games were a prize on ant and Dec Saturday night take away shown on tv3. (ITV in the UK)

They give away items as prizes that were seen on ads during a particular show the previous week.

Seeing something similar on my LG TV, but it doesn't auto switch, just brings up an option to switch. I make sure to turn off the switch, when I am done with it. Its kind of annoying.

I'm seeing the same on mine. Not auto switching, but the HDMI port pops up and gives the option to fast switch for about 8 seconds.

In the settings on the switch there's an option related to the TV power which might be worth a look. It's supposed to turn the switch off with the TV and vice versa but uses hdmi signals to do that, might be worth turning that off to see if it helps.

The annoying one for me is when I turn my switch off fully and then place it into the dock, it turns back on again. Have to make sure the dock is powered off too before putting the switch in it.

It's not as fast as the official plug but it charged it well, no overheating etc.

So glad to hear that and thanks for the feedback! I went to a Switch meetup in town yesterday, of course forgot the AC adapter as it was attached to the dock and almost went to Argos to pick up another adapter when I thought to myself.....I have a Nexus 6P charger....won't that work!?

    Cheers,

I got the official Nintendo one from Argos (link) and I like it but it's more expensive than the Hori. It comes with a screen protector which I didn't want to use but guess I will have to after seeing the scratching that the dock can do!! Not sure if the Hori comes with a screen protector??

    Thanks,
    M

I think it's a different ballgame on PSPlus . I complain about the over-reliance on indie titles on PSPlus, but not when we're dealing with a semi handheld device. For instance it makes sense to me to have indie Vita titles made available for free, but when you're dealing with a powerful machine like PS4, I think people expect a few older AAA games.

The Vita is just a Handheld for JRPGs now so I think that will be getting sold in favour of the Switch.

The Vita was on course to becoming a great little machine for indies until even the indie companies realised there wasn't enough of a market share there to bother porting over to it. The indies were a great addition to the machine but they couldn't cover up the fact that there was a paucity of bigger titles being made for it. The Vita was a great little console but it's never going to be remembered as anything but a failure. Hopefully the same doesn't happen to the Switch. Indie games are a great addition to a console but they're not system sellers and most of the indie games being ported to the Switch seem to be ones that can already be played on other consoles. It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep third party support for this system.

Hadn't seen the screen scratching issues how bad are they? I assumed they'd used gorilla glass that's disappointing

I had assumed the same but it's plastic on the screen :-( Loads of posts online about the scratching albeit the same switch involved and a guy on YouTube as well. I'm glad I know now though and can take measures to prevent it (link)!

UK week one Switch sales hit 80k

Nintendo Switch sold 80k units in its first 48 hours on sale in the UK, MCV understands.

To put that into context, that’s double the 40k Wii U managed in its opening weekend, but below the 113k shifted by the 3DS in the same period.

For further context, Wii sold around 105k in its opening weekend. The Xbox One managed 150k, and the PS4 250k.

To what extent Switch’s numbers were limited by stock levels is unclear. Certainly some retailers are sold out, although the machine is still available from some online stores and can still be found on the High Street, albeit patchily.

In the US, GameStop described the launch as “one of the strongest and most successful gaming console launches for GameStop in the last several years”, according to GameSpot. Analysts have over the weekend voiced the opinion that Switch has done very well in Japan and the US, but less so in Europe.

Critical smash hit The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the Switch’s best-selling UK title, although it didn’t make to the top of the UK Charts, being beaten by new PS4 IP Horizon Zero Dawn, which became PS4’s biggest ever new IP launch.

78 per cent of Breath of the Wild’s sales were for Switch and 22 per cent for Wii U. The Switch game ranks as the third biggest Zelda launch ever behind Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Breath of the Wild accounted for 75 per cent of all total Switch software sales for the week, with two others making the Top Ten – 1-2 Switch at No.4 and Super Bomberman R at No.7. The Switch version of Just Dance 2017 also sees that game re-enter the Top 40 at No.24, although Skylanders Imaginators misses out on a Top 40 spot despite the new Switch version.

    80,000. That's not impressive.

I think it depends on how many units they produced. If they made 250k units, and only sold that much, it's definitely concerning, but if they only made 100k, then selling 80% of stock in 2 days isn't a bad thing.

So do I considering alot of gamers felt burnt by the WiiU and then you can get a new PS4 slim with the latest exclusive for €250.

Zelda sales were interesting too with only 22% sold being the WiiU version.

I'd be surprised if they sold the next 80k within the first month of sales.
Its a 1 games system and has little else coming before Autumn

It had a very limited supply. Hasn't been available on Amazon for nearly 2 months. They only got their copies sent out this morning and some people are still waiting. Plus it got no promotion or Special Editions.

Talking about sales breakdown. 78% of Zelda day one gamers bought it for the Switch, considering the amount of WiiUs out there over 3 - 4 years most people were more than happy to upgrade console just for one game, says alot.

I bought the Switch knowing I only had Zelda. It was disappointing to only have it, but honestly, Zelda will do me until at least Mario Kart. It's the first time in a long time that I've actually enjoyed playing a game, and exploring, without rushing through it as the next big thing was coming.

Yeah, Nintendo messed up a bit with the whole lack of a Virtual Console at launch, but damn, they nailed Zelda.

I dunno, like what exactly is the need for VC at the moment, there's about a dozen or so games between digital, physical and it's like a branding gimmick anyway, we have no VC but we do have 5 Neogeo games.

I agree with you 100%! I am absolutely determined to make BOTW be the first Zelda game I complete fully! I started various other ones and never finished them unfortunately but having the time now before the next major big release game is exactly the kind of pace I want, may not suit everyone though!

Well, seeing as how we know they have the NES emulator running like butter off a hot crumpet on the NES mini, and as I understand it it shouldn't pose a significant development issue to port that across to the Switch, and since the NES Mini at retail came with a unique points code that plugs into the current reward architecture, it would not be hugely difficult for Ninty to put 30 NES games up on the VC instantly and reward owners of the NES mini with free access to them, which would finally give me something to let my little darlings play and end the endless screaming and eye-gouging that Snipperclips inevitably inspires. Yes, I am aware this is not going to happen but I like to live in a fluffily optimistic bubble made of rainbows and unicorn jizz.

For one, my wife would have loved to played some 2D Mario games. For her, Nintendo is Super Mario 1,2,3, and World. She thought she'd be able to play them on this, the way she could on the 3DS.

It will come eventually (why did we get that NeoGeo stuff and not first party though) but it would have been an easy way to pad out a very light launch game selection.

Unless they are coding in leaderboards etc for the 'added online functionality' on their 1st party games.

burnt by the Wii U was a major factor in me not buying a switch day1, plus the fact that Nintendo have still managed to mess up the online and friends system.
I think though that once they start aiming this more towards kids it will start selling very strong, I can see my 2 daughters wanting one at christmas but as of right now they don't know it exists.

In terms of only 80,000 sold because of shortage of stock, I doubt this is a factor, easily pick a switch up right now in my local smyths
