To anyone lucky enough to have gotten a Switch. Dbrand( one of the biggest skin manufacturers) have said DONT BUY A SKIN as it will damage your switch. The usual PVC covers seem to be fine.
See images and more info here.

Don’t put stickers on your Switch, says sticker maker
Aftermarket “skins” might mess up your Switch and Joy-Cons

Nintendo Switch owners might want to refrain from decorating their new consoles with stickers and skins. Manufacturer dbrand, which makes skins for a variety of consumer electronics like phones, laptops and video game consoles, says applying those skins to the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers can damage the surface of those devices.

Seems the switch screen is plastic like the vitas so extremely durable but easy to scratch.
Anyone gone for a glass screen protector yet ?

You'll lose the touchscreen with a glass screen protector.

So I guess a plastic one is needed then. Then again why are there companies selling glass ones ?

Seems like the stories of the dock scratching the plastic bezel on the switch are true. First glixel reported it and now Blunty

Anyone with a Switch experienced this ?

I think you should be fine with a glass screen protector. It's the same screen as an iPhone and they work fine with glass ones. Much easier to apply too.

Iphone is tempered glass. Switch has a plastic screen according to reports just like the Vita. I haven't received mine from Amazon / parcel motel yet so can't say for sure.

In any case Orzly are selling glass protectors. The problem seems to be the bezel of the switch (also plastic) can get scratched by the dock.
Therefore I am scared stiff of using the dock until I have a protector on the screen. Which is why I was wondering if anyone on this thread has scratched up their screen yet ?

Is their any demo units in town? I'll be in the city center later today and wouldn't mind seeing what it looks like in real life.

Having played the Switch, let me assure you you do not need a Pro controller. I'm sure it's a very nice piece of a kit, and perhaps JoyCon comfort varies from player to player. Perhaps it is necessary if experiencing technical issues too. But I currently feel there is no need for me to spend 70-80 quid on an additional controller. It's absolutely an optional luxury unless anyone is unlucky enough to be experiencing the sync issues.

No. They won't be coming for a while. Gamestop's in America got a few but they're not demo units. It's a screen with videos you can view. They're supposed to be upgraded over the coming months to have playable units.

Does anyone have any reservation codes they don't need for Dublin?

Are the speakers on the handheld unit a bit crackly for anyone else. It's only really.noticeable for certain high pitched sound effects. Like opening the map screen in Zelda, there's a bit of a crackle.

Not sure if it's just my unit or a general things as I think most 3ds's had the same issue.

Pretty much everywhere I've read says you need a Pro Controller. It's more comfortable, bigger buttons, the control sticks feel better and it's preferable for long play sessions. You don't need a memory card depending on what you're buying and how you're buying them. So just the console, a game(Zelda of course) and a Pro Controller. That's €330 plus €70 plus €80. That's €480.

Snipperclips looks great, that would be another €20, it's digital.

If you're using it portably then you may want a powerbank battery and a USB C charger. That could be any price but probably at least €50.

I haven't really heard anyone saying the Pro was essential, the opposite in fact; the reviews I've seen have said the joycons are quite good and to hold off on getting a pro until you try them.

As for a battery pack, no way in hell should it cost that much. The Switch battery is about 4500mAh, you can get a 20,000mAh battery pack on Amazon for under €30 with plenty of options, or even take a smaller size than that if you don't need 4 recharges.

I hadn't intended on buying one of these straight away but I got really tempted seeing the review scores for BOTW and hearing people talk about it. And I just got my overpaid taxes from 2016 back too. I think I'll hold off on it though, I really don't need such a compelling distraction in the last 10 weeks or so of my master's course. I'll wait until I finish in May before splashing out, I think. Hopefully prices will become a little more competitive and some of the stupider online issues will be ironed out by then.

Right now the prices are, frankly, stupid, at least with regards to how they translate from US prices. $300 becomes €330 for the console and $60 becomes €70 for a game. Maybe in a few months there will at least be some bundles to make it seem a bit fairer. When I got my Wii U (admittedly, a while after it came out but still) I got the console, Smash Bros with a GC adapter, Mario 3D World and a pro controller for €365. I would have no issues paying about that for just the console and Zelda so hopefully I can get something like that when they aren't sold out everywhere.

To be fair to Sligeach, I also saw a good few high profile places suggest the Pro was essential so was a tad concerned. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised at how capable the JoyCons are :)

Yap with USA prices you have to add in the sales tax say 10% so that 300 use becomes 330 with the rates at the moment about 325.

Games are about the same as well.

There's basicly no difference In price at all.

You buy something, with staff discount for example, and then trade it into CEX for cash. Then you are quids in.

If my console is faulty (either the dock, or the adaptor is off) can I return to Argos (it's used obviously), or will I have to ring up Nintendo? :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

The 'scratch' problem may become a thing for Nintendo, bit of an oversight not to have some cushion on the rails of the dock. I think it depends on peoples use of it and how rough they constantly take it out. I think a screen protector was almost a little essential anyway if people were gonna bring it around etc, but it's even more so now imo. A tempered glass screen protector is probably ideal to stop bubbles etc. No loss of touchscreen with decent ones either.

I'm thinking about getting a pro controller as well. The price is a bit high (50-odd would be fine).

So I was wondering as well if I really need it. I like the joy-cons so far.

I'd hope for early adopters it can be patched.
It's just given me another reason to avoid for now until I see how it all fairs out over the coming months. The fact that it has no VC, no youtube, no broswer, sync issues with left joycon etc at launch adds to that.
I'm going to do my best to hold out until at least E3.
Upcoming games is what I want to know about.
I nearly caved today only for reading that piece on Eurogamer.

No but it doesn't help, mainly dropped because of the console and it's faults at launch above.

I know it's less than you paid, but if do think about selling the pro controller I would offer 50 euro. Joycons are probably enough for me also, but an extra controller wouldn't go astray...
If you don't want to sell or won't at 50, no worries!

The Pro controller is really quite expensive for what it is, but I do think it's the best option for people with larger hands. The Joy-Cons in a grip are still just too dinky overall for extended use IMO.
Not a deal breaker, but aside from the sticks, the buttons are just too much on the small side.

I've seen countless sites say the Pro controller is much better. IGN(Jose), GoNintendo(RMC), The Verge, Kotaku, etc. I was only reading a review from Kotaku this morning and it jumped out at me. I read a lot so maybe ye don't see it or hear it.

Here's what The Verge wrote while I try to find what Kotaku said.

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the best way to play Zelda: Breath of the Wild

    http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/2/24/14699044/nintendo-switch-pro-controller-hands-on-preview

"I also highly recommend getting a Switch Pro Controller, which costs $70. Not only does it not suffer from the Joy-Con tracking issues I ran into, it’s more comfortable and easier to use than the Joy-Con mounted on the grip. The Pro Controller also makes it much easier to use the Switch to “switch” seamlessly. You pop the console into its dock, pick up the controller, and play. If you want to take it on the go, pop it out and you’re ready to rock. Without a Pro Controller, you have to disassemble and reattach the controllers each time you go from TV to mobile, as well as anytime you want to charge the Joy-Con. It significantly slows down an otherwise pleasingly snappy process."

    http://kotaku.com/nintendo-switch-the-kotaku-review-1792776350

That's just one paragraph and they said plenty more besides. Numerous other sites and articles have said this but I can't remember the exact places and articles.

I've heard the preview controller is better as well, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the joycon. It works perfectly and it's easy to use. I think the pro controller is far from essential.
