Obviously Google heard that you didn't like her and is punishing you now :p

    - Do you have your phones region set to the US? As in your phones general settings, not the setting in the GHome app.

    - Maybe you had your GHome plugged out, maybe it doesn't have the latest firmware?

    - System firmware version: 78295
    - Cast firmware version: 1.22.78295
    - Country code: US

What sort of Android TV do you have? Is it a Nvidia Shield TV or a TV with Android TV built in? Also have you tried youtube?

Interestingly Google actually makes significantly more money (ad money) off iOS then it does off Android!

Also if you have ever been to a Google office, you will see Mac's everywhere and even iPhones. Google folk really like Apple gear.

Sorry, I don't have a Netflix sub any more, so can't really help with that.

Mac is a no brainer for most developers as it is a Unix based operating system, with a nice GUI on top. You have a nice command line, bash, etc. and can easily install most of the nice open source software.

Linux isn't half as nice an environment IMO.

Also you can run windows on a mac if you need to do windows development, but the reverse isn't true. Plus the hardware is very well built and reliable.

The advantage of iPhone is just simplicity and reliability. IMO Android is such a pain in the ass mess by comparison. Every time I try using it I think it is improving nicely and then something completely idiotic hits me that reminds me what a disorganised mess it is. But that is just my opinion, I'm sure others would disagree.

I just need too much Windows software for work and the workarounds of windows on a Mac won't do what I need. If I didn't though I'd give one a try again.

Just FYI Windows runs natively on Mac, it is just dual boot, so not really a workaround. It is native x86 running on intel CPU.

Also VMWare Fusion is a great option to give you direct access to windows apps under Mac OS. But of course it isn't for everyone.

The simplicity is one appeal to me with an iPhone too but also the biggest failing for what I need. The limits are too tight (though I know the limits don't matter for 95% of people) and the complete railroading you towards icloud could never work for me. That said, if the 8 is miles ahead in things like camera later this year I might still take a look and buy a 4G Android tablet for work stuff where I need quick file access.

Railroad to icloud! It really doesn't, just one screen during setup that you can click skip on and you never hear about it again.

I don't use icloud, all Google services mostly and dropbox. I prefer to use tools that won't lock you into one ecosystem.

The reliability, not so much. It was probably the case a few years ago but for any small amount Android manufacturers have gained in that respect, Apple have slipped back double.

Arghhh, I get to support my families Android phones, they have my heart broken! Android is very far from being reliable, it causes me constant problems. Constant, inexplicable reboots, Moto G's corrupting SD cards, needing to bloody root an Android phone just to change the language, memory "bit rot" making phones unusable after just a year, software updates take so long to come out and many companies stop realising updates after just one year!

God, it gets my blood pressure up just thinking about it! If I could buy my whole family iPhones then it would make my life SO much easier. I never have any issues with iPhone, it just works. I've an iPhone 6, 2.5 years old now and almost as perfect as the day I bought it, in fact better, given that it gets the latest software update the day it is realised! I haven't been tempted to upgrade at all given how good it is.

Sorry, just needed to vent, my OH is already given out last night about her 3 month old Moto G4 Plus, causing issues already!

G4 Plus is a 150euro phone... iPhone is nearly 1000... Seems like you're comparing apples with oranges... Choose a high quality Android phone & you won't experience those issues... Having said that, Android implements things differently depending on the brand. The only thing that make the iPhone familiar is its market saturation.

I don't have any issues with my HTC 10, it's awesome in just about every way & I find the iPhone experience very one dimensional. I certainly haven't experienced any Android specific issues when setting up home automation, with multiple devices/brands/hubs etc.

Sounds like this might be significant here. I've only ever used higher end Android phones and I've *never* experienced any of the issues BK has.

I agree, a colleague has gotten a Google Pixel phone and at least at this early stage it looks like a fantastic phone.

However the issues I've experienced aren't limited to cheap Android phones. My best friend had bought the top of range Samsung Galaxy phone every year, S4, S5, S6. The problem is he had to buy a new one every year! He didn't want to but ended up with the "bit rot" issue and other hardware or battery flakiness around each one and needing to get a new one every year!

He has now swapped to iPhone 7, he was so fed up with the repeated issues.

And then of course there is the Galaxy Note 7, a €1000 Android phone that likes to explode!

Both Android hardware and software seem to be incredibly variable, with relatively poor integration and hardware quality control issues.

In fairness, it looks like Google is trying to finally fix this with the Pixel phone, I'm keeping an eye on how it develops with great interest.

BTW iPhone starts at €500 new.

I agree about Samsung... No idea why people continue to use them. They come loaded with bloatware, slow down to a crawl after a year of use and the batteries try to murder you... They are very successful at marketing though.

I suppose the point is that Android/iPhone or otherwise, if you are going to interact with lots of stuff and build a reasonably sized system of equipment, you should have a good reliable phone to start with.

Anyone else having trouble with Today FM commands recently? Always worked before "Hey Google, play Today FM" and it would stream from TuneIn.

As of the last few days, the same command fails, and now seems to try iheartradio by default. It can't find it on either. "Play Today FM on TuneIn" gives "I looked for today fm on TuneIn but it either isn't available or can't be played right now"

Very annoying as it was one of our most frequent uses in the kitchen.

I submitted feedback about the issue within the google home app, maybe if a few more do the same it might get looked at.

Just got a notification on my HTC 10 that google assistant is available.

I can now voice activate my hue lights and nest via my HTC.

Just to touch on a Samsung point earlier... am still rocking an S5 with zero issues.

Some amount of updates coming on stream in the past month, but still perfect. No need to upgrade to be honest. If it aint broke... :)

I have a relative bringing a Google home assistant from the states next month, just want to make sure i am setting it up right from day one... (have setup a new gmail account for the family so we can all avail of it.)

    Any tips besides that?

I am using a gsuite account not regular gmail. The gas thing is, I can add and pull calender info via assistant on my phone, bit can do neither via google home.

Will be in the US, first week of June. According to BBC, Google plan to do a UK launch of Home before end of June.

Q1: Would a UK launch mean Ireland too?

Q2: If I bought in the US and bring it home, will it "know" to connect to Irish/UK servers rather than US ones? I have seen that causes slowness for importers.

Risky , unsure if it will include Ireland. Pixel is an example of this, on the UK Google store but not available in Ireland.

Got my home in the US and it's working perfectly!
