No VC at launch at least feeds into my irrational hope of an 10 week run of 10c GameCube games to kick off the VC in style a la WiiU (albeit that was SNES and NES games...). Eternal Darkness, MK DoubleDash, F Zero GX, Mario Sunshine, Pikmin 2, Path of Radiance, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime ; Luigi's Mansion ; Smash Bros Melee. Done! Make sure this happens inside that window between the initial release and a 2nd manufacturing wave being distributed so that it only rewards the early adopters. Happy days.

It's crucial, in the aftermath of the NES mini, that if they're going to launch the service with a give-away or discount they do it with something worthwhile and with a tangible - if notional only - high ticket price, as opposed to something we already paid €65 for a few short weeks ago.

Those few VC games on Wii U were 30c. No way would Nintendo let people have Gamecube games for 10c, however nice it would be.

Pricing will be crucial on NES games now. I'll be interested to see how the emulation is compared to the NES Classic Mini. I'm done with NES games, it was nice to play some of them again but it just cemented my view on that generation. Also, people can play any game from that era on their NES Classic Mini now for free. Sure there's the portable aspect but I don't care about that, never really have. But there's no way I'm ever paying for another NES game again.

Yeah, that might be the case, I also might be thinking of a different device, other than the Switch :)

128gb seems to be acceptable at the moment, price wise.
Thing is, I have a 64gb lying around that I'm not using for anything else, so that should do for a bit, hopefully :D

I got a 200 GB, you can get them for a price, thats not much more than 128gb.

Argos have 256gb cards for €115 which still seems a bit too high tbh.

40 UK on Amazon for 128GB, I think the 256 is overkill unless you are going fully digital....

A few worrying reports of controllers de-syncing during play. No doubt virtual console and the like will be along in good time, but as Schreier notes any reliability issues would be a significant and immediate issue. Here's hoping a patch sorts it all quick like.

I got an email from Amazon which said "We have good news! One of your pre-ordered items is now eligible for release date delivery and has been upgraded at no additional charge". So it does appear that they should tell/the estimate on your order is correct/accurate.

TBF I am in London so would have been very surprised if I didn't get it on the 3rd.
When did you place your pre-order ?
About 20 minutes after Amazon opened pre-orders on the 13th of January

Something I've read in a few places is that games where you need to use both Joy-cons and you're using the buttons and the control stick together, that it's infinitely more comfortable to use the Joy-con grip. They mentioned Zelda in particular. I can see what they mean, especially the right Joy-con. So you most likely won't be playing it or games like it Wii style or slouched on a couch like in the presentation.

Ah didn't know that. Haven't checked out xenoblade X, but good to hear anyway

Everyone can finally relax. The most important information that we've all been dying to know has been revealed.
Nintendo Switch's updated Mii creator lets you turn your hair blue
    Azure to be sure.

You may have already seen our detailed unboxing video where we finally unpack a Nintendo Switch - and switch it on. But what you won't have seen is this little addition to the game's Mii creator.

Yes, you can now dye your Mii's hair pretty much any colour of the rainbow.
    jpg

It's a first for the Mii avatars, despite them having existed since the Wii. Now, carried over from 3DS and Wii U, the little avatars return, and are accessible via the Switch's system settings menu.

As if by coincidence, an article talking about the control schemes of Switch and the issues concerned has just been published.
Nintendo Switch's control options won't be optional for some
The Pro Controller will be a must-buy for some players

I’m not one to balk at the idea of owning multiple controllers for game consoles, but I had hoped I wouldn’t be forced to do so with the Nintendo Switch.

I have two different fight sticks for my PlayStation 4 and a handful of different USB controllers for my PC, and I own every iteration of the Xbox controller. I’m comfortable with spending money on different controllers for different purposes, or even multiple controllers for the same console for when friends come over.

But the Joy-Cons and their adaptability are one of the Switch’s biggest selling points for me. The two little controllers that come with the system can be docked to the console, removed to be held in each hand by a single player, or used separately to accommodate two people and the system. The system even comes with a grip accessory (that looks like a cute pup) to make the two controllers feel like a standard console controller.

That’s a lot of value for a $300 system. Which is good, because Nintendo’s price tags for the extra controllers and accessories feel prohibitive and unnecessary. But after spending a few hours playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it feels like I basically have to spend $70 more for my home system.

The Joy-Con controllers seemed like a mismatch when playing Breath of the Wild, no matter how I tried to hold them. “Play with the controller that is the most comfortable for you,” they say in the fighting game community. “You should be fighting your opponent, not the controller.”

Playing Zelda with the Joy-Cons felt wrong. The placement of the face buttons, analog sticks and trigger buttons felt uncomfortable: I was battling the controllers themselves, not bokoblins in a forest. We’re used to Nintendo systems that feel great to use from the first moment to the last — think of the ergonomics of the original Wii controllers or the different options with the 3DS — and I just couldn’t figure out how to make the Joy-Cons comfortable.

My experience improved instantly with the Switch Pro Controller. It feels solid, familiar and tuned for complex movements, and that feeling is mandatory for Breath of the Wild. It didn’t just feel better for me; it made the experience wonderful. In fact, when a handful of players across Vox Media played the Switch in our office, the feeling was unanimous. Zelda just felt better on the Pro Controller. It wasn’t just me.

I’m serious about competitive and high-level play. I’m already excited about the new Mario Kart, Splatoon and Bomberman titles. My dreams of bringing these games around with me with only my Switch nestled in my jacket pocket have been dashed by the reality of how the controllers feel. If I want to play in a way that feels comfortable to me, I’ll have to bring the Pro Controller too.

For some, it might be unreasonable to think that a portable device like the Switch should feel like a great gaming experience for someone who wants to play at higher levels. But I’ve never had issues with the Vita or the 3DS. My portable gaming experiences usually feel ready for high-level play, whether I’m racking up huge combos in Lumines or killing dinos in Monster Hunter. There is no way I can make Nintendo Switch’s portable configurations feel good without that Pro Controller.

My suspicion is that most people will be able to tolerate the stock controllers, a few will hate them so much they only play with the Pro, and a tiny number will absolutely love them. But I doubt I’ll be completely alone, which means a lot of players will need to budget an extra $70 on launch day.

    So...
    This is interesting.
Particularly for those who reckon the Switch is expensive to buy for, even me when it comes to controllers.
I'm here in Argos and they've listings on the instore system, including a Hori pad, 3rd party alternative to the official pro pad, and it's a pocket friendly €33.99.
Also, they've a Hori LAN adapter for €33.99 as well as a charging dock for €39.99, presumably for the second set of Joycons as the original set will charge on system.
Bomberman R is €46.99 as well.
They've a comfort grip, non charging, for €12.99 too.

Can you preorder/reserve them? I'll be in Dun Laoghaire later so I might visit Argos then if so.

To be honest I haven't even watched any unboxings or Ui videos, never mind Zelda stuff.
That was just a thread on reddit so relatively safe :)

Paid off Gamestop on Henry Street and they said I'll definitely have one at midnight. Whoop!

God, I have a weird feeling my fully paid off switch and Zelda won't be there when I go to collect in Henry St after 10am. I just don't trust GS, to hold it for me for some weird reason.

And also, I bet they will have opened and removed the seal from Zelda for some stupid reason before I've even touched it.

I'm gonna try and get an Argos reservation as well in case Gamestop comes up short on the pre order.

I really wish I didn't have to hold off on their but can't stump up that much cash along with everything else that week.

Even though I don't have a pre order anymore. If I still did it wouldn't bother me too much the VC wasn't launching with it because after how quiet they were about it I think we all kind of knew it wouldn't.

All I would ask for though is to give a firm date soon when it will launch and none of this drip feeding the games bull**** they did with Wii U. Have all the VC games ready to go when it launches.

The Switch Day 1 update will bring:
    • Access to network features, such as Nintendo eShop, online gameplay, ability to share images to social media, etc.
    • Ability to link Nintendo Accounts to your Nintendo Switch console.
    • Ability to connect online using hotspots that require authentication, such as at a hotel or café. A web applet will open up so the user can sign-in or accept terms of use.

Same as, haven't the cash flow for a Pro controller this month with the console and Zelda, at least we actually have some semblance of controller we can use.... :)
