OK. So, let's think about that for a minute.

    I own a Wii U and a regular TV.
I'd say Super Mario Maker is the best game I own but I enjoy MK8 and Yoshi's Woolly World too.

For me, an upgrade to Switch is 330 Euro from Smyths and the necessary accessories looks like it would set me back another 250 Euro at least.

So the question is am I getting nearly 600 Euros worth of value from playing Zelda in 720p vs playing the same game at 900p?

For that same 600 Euro investment I could have a holiday abroad and buy a guitar... AND I can play the damn thing on the bus? SOLD! ;)

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't buy the Switch for BOTW alone and I absolutely will not be buying Mario Kart 8 "Deluxe".

For me, the portable aspect is the main selling point at launch. Then it's pretty much a gamble based on the assumption that future games will be good.

I have not ever questioned what console does but the price of accessories is annoying me big style

Might just sell the wii u and games to buy the switch. And in that way can get whatever accessories I want

I'm thinking that it could be a year(perhaps longer) maybe before I'll buy a Switch now. In that time I'd want a Pro controller, €80, charging grip, €30, 128GB Micro SD card, could be any price but let's say €70(though it's likely more), a second set of Joy-cons, €90. I haven't mentioned any extra games.

E3, this year will be important in determining how much longer I wait. A killer Metroid game could be enough to twist my arm, and I don't mean Metroid Prime 4. And getting a clearer picture of third party support and how Nintendo will operate everything.

That's fair enough. I might invest in a pro controller when I have a house as it'd be something I'd leave near the tv the Switch would be hooked up to (no tv at the moment, just a modest projector). The second set of joy-cons can wait until I have a few games that I want to play with folks (I'd like to get the neon ones).

I was all set to wait, same as yourself, but when I moved to an apartment I had to downsize and sell my games, books etc so then had a lump of money and no real interest in massive televisions, PS4's etc. Set aside most of it for my wedding later this year and have enough left over for something silly and fun, that'll be the Switch.

There's lots of negative speak about the Switches cost, functionality, games on release etc, I'm just happy that none of it applies to me as I'm not doing any cost/performance comparisons.

They aren't necessary accessories though, three controller's and an optional grip are hardly needed to use the console?

    About €45 for a 128gb Micro SD.

Your €250 estimate is accurate for you but it's not going to be for everyone, saying the Switch costs €600 all in is stretching a lot.

    Zelda costs €65
    Total outlay €395

That's how much it costs to play, as you suggest, Zelda BotW on a Switch.

I don't know what point there is in inflating the price of the package, except to undermine the value of the Switch as a prospective purchase.

In fairness, a lot of people are going to factor in the cost of the Pro Controller (something like €80?) for playing BotW, and in their defence that is exactly how Dog-boy in the Switch ad plays it.

The SD card, extra joy-cons and charging grip on the other hand are unnecessary for "just" zelda. Unless you planned to play Joy-Con all the way, in which case sub the Charging grip in for the Pro Controller.

I think Sligeach has over-played his hand on this one. It's very clear what's going on. He's buying all the BotW amiibo. Your cover's blown, man! ABORT! ABORT!

Hey, why is there no Switch dock with a port for charging a 2nd set of joycons on a charging grip?

    Wa-Hey.

I realised earlier this month that as our honeymoon is a cruise, I can bring the Switch with me as she is planning on bringing a few books (two weeks floating around Iceland needs to be broken up into bite-size chunks). When I brought the Switch's portability up I was met with a very dark look. So... we'll see.

Stay safe Rhyme, you're in dangerous territory mentioning stuff like that

I think, for the most part, the charging grip would really only be necessary if you're getting a second set of joy-cons. (Or are planning gaming sessions of 20+ hours...)

As I said previously too, I don't have any requirement for the pro controller myself, I think the joy-cons in the grip will suffice for any traditional style game needs, or even the joy-cons held separately. If the direction buttons don't measure up when using them, I'd consider it then (but hopefully at that stage they may have allowed the Wii U Pro Controller to work with the Switch)

I'll be floating back from Reykjavik on a block of ice :)

We ended up agreeing that if she take out a book, I can take out the Switch but as soon as the book goes away, so does anything with a Nintendo logo.

I'll have to invest in a carry-case by then. Will be looking to hear from folks on here if they get one on launch to see how it fares (toughness, softness, ease of use etc).

I've this official one ordered, so I'll let you know how it measures up.

That's what I'm getting as well. A lot of the others look a bit too...flashy, with lots of bits and bobs like storage cases and toast holders that can get lost down sofas etc.

Just as a matter of interest, why are people planning on getting the Pro controller? Especially before even trying the joy-cons

I'd say the overall size, weight, and the fact it has a d-pad are all factors.
Not getting one myself though. Opting for 4 joycons and two grips

If you buy the pair of Joy-Cons in a pack, do they come with a standard grip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Don't forget one (non charging) grip comes with the console. I'm ordering the grey console, an additional set of neon joy-cons, and a charging grip.

My logic is that one set of joy-cons will charge off the console when docked/not in use, and the other pair can be charged on the charging grip.

I don't believe so, I think they just come with the wrist strap connection things, could be wrong though!

Don't think so, just the wrist straps.

There is. There's two USB 2 ports on the left and 1 USB 3 in the back. You can charge 3 charging grips with joycons if you want to.

I think it's because they are professional.

Unfortunately not. Just the two cons and plain black straps.

Upper tweet is wrong, previews on the 23rd, reviews on the 1st, Zelda embargo is still the 2nd apparently.
