An alarm was only available on the Mk7 GTI / GTD with KESSY i.e. keyless.

I tried to spec the alarm separately but couldn't so got keyless aswell. I wouldn't be without it now.

Yep, a lot of people who do spend 40k especially with pcp, probably realisticly can't afford it and will find it tight as it is lol

"What does this fella want a white 3 door hatchback for FFS :D"

To play devils advocate, the salesmen are more used to dealing with punters coming in who don't know what they want, who don't know one end of a car from another... so they have it ingrained in them to steer the customer away from buying something totally unsuitable and un-saleable 3 years down the road.

That said, they should also recognise when they have a well clued in customer in front of them too. Some of them do to be fair.

When i go to my local dealer i just go in and say i want that, that and that even ticking the box for the furry dice option. No questions asked and a no problem reply lol

I remember going for a price on a new Golf van 130bhp 6 speed in another dealer slightly farther away. He says to me sure what do you want 130bhp for, he then started to try and sell me a 100bhp one he had out back that was sitting there probably for months. I knew it was old stock because it didn't have the 2003 tech pack. When he finally priced what i wanted he was 700 more than my local dealer.

I believe it's likely down to insurance requirements in different jurisdictions. UK insurance co's probably insist on alarms as it brings the car into a lower insurance bracket. The insurers here may not care so much to make optioning it worthwhile.
I reckon potential buyers are drawn quicker to fancy alloys / sat nav rather than a standard alarm...

Anyone that orders a Gti and wants the factory fitted alarm all they have to do is request it from the dealer when ordering. The alarm option wasn't available for the Clubsport in Ireland when I ordered mine last July, however I insisted that I wanted the alarm and all it took was a phone call from my dealer to VW Ireland and I had the alarm included at a cost of €379.

I know. I've also found VW Ireland pretty open to adding options that aren't on the official list. But you need to be clued in and do the homework yourself. I've had success myself getting things added that weren't in the pricelist but it required a bit of googling to get the correct option codes, etc.

The original point is, why isn't the alarm standard in the first place? My guess is - the product guys in VW go through the specs and possible option configurations... they pick out the items that have "showroom appeal". An alarm has no showroom appeal so it's glossed over.

It'll only become standard if legislation or insurance companies enforce it (e.g. like airbags, immobilisers, etc).

From what I gather from speaking to the manager at the dealership every single option that VW Ireland and other car manufacturers list for their vehicles has to be presented to the inland revenue for tax/vrt purposes and then have to wait sometimes ages for revenue to confirm the tax/vrt.

Yep, thats true. But it's the product / marketing guys in VW Ireland that spec the standard kit in the cars. Someone in there decides an alarm isn't worth adding as standard (see my last post for probable reasons) and it gets dropped in favour of bigger alloys / parking sensors / whatever.

Your perfectly right, another example of that was the black roof option on the Clubsport which was an option in other markets but not here, no doubt if I had wanted it I could have had it. I think the moral of the story here is that if a potential buyer wants a particular option not listed here but available elsewhere insist on getting it or else, after all who is paying for it.

Not sure if this means the first cars will begin rolling into showrooms in April or if it means that ordering is only starting in April. If the latter, that's pretty disappointing. The fact that none of the options are priced in the GTD/GTI/R document posted above indicates that they are probably a while away from opening the order book. :(

Nah... I've seen that "TBC" stuff in the previous versions of the PDF. It's no real indicator.

One way to find out. Call into a dealer and ask.

Gave my friendly local dealer a call.
They can take orders from next week, except for the PP which will be another month.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of monthly payments would one have to make on a 3 year PCP deal with say 5k deposit and 30kms mileage allowance per year on a 3 door manual car listed at €38,570.

I have been posting for a while about my GTD which was bought in May of 2015. I put every available extra (pretty much) - cash price of 40k.

Not long after, I began to regret not getting the GTi. I have had p*ss poor luck with the car too, and so I began checking around.

I was correctly advised by all on here that the 1st year's depreciation would be the worst, and boy were ye right!

Anyhoo, today I visited Keane's in Deansgrange.

Over there, they had a fairly bog standard GTi with PP, no additional extras, 142 reg. Its listed here...

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/volkswagen/golf/used-2014-142-volkswagen-golf-gti-per-dublin-fpa-6444584994604750658

I have 42k km on the clock and the car in value (to them) went from €40,000 to €25,495 in just under 2 years as I was told that I would have to pony up €2500 to change, and redo my finance, which would change my monthly payment of €400 to €546 a month.

So basically, I'd have to pay the 2.5k to go back a year and down in spec and increase my repayments.

When I highlighted that it appeared to be a little off, the salesperson shrugged his shoulders and said that diesel golfs had gone down in popularity. I think he then realised what my next comment was going to be and swiftly moved on.

    Obviously, its not a runner.

Just thought i'd share that with ye.

Why do you dislike the GTD, surely the best of both worlds in terms of performance vs economy.

Dropped my own in for it's first service this morning and gave the woman booking it in a list of stuff for them to look at while they had it.

Told her the app connect often randomly disconnects, regardless of the phone, cable or OS used. "Or we don't support App Connect. You'll need to ring Apple and Samsung, it's their system we just install it". Right.

Told her the tyre pressure monitor has thrown up numerous false positives. "What pressure are you using?" "35" "Oh that's very high, a Golf shouldn't have more than 30". Couldn't fathom that the car listed that as the preferred pressure.

Told her the park pilot likes to go awol about 10% of the time. "Oh, do you need it much?"

Very inspiring that that's the kind of feedback you get on faults on a 1 year old 40k car. Think I'll be booking it in for a proper warranty job and following up with VW Ireland if needs be.

Find a different dealer. My local crowd are always very good for stuff like this.

I had a MK6 GTD and while it was a very good competent car, I couldn't wait to get back into a petrol. The diesel clatter drove me bananas.

Plus they're not all that quick...

There are lovely looking but your right about the the diesel clatter.
Also every time you see a GTI you'd have to think about what could have been.............

like when i see a R in my gti !

Where did you bring it? (PM if you like if you'd rather not say).

The lack of a 1.4l petrol on the Comfortline is disappointing. The corresponding UK models have much more engine choices.

there was no 1.4 in the previous model either...........from what I am reading best bet is to wait for the new 1.5 tsi engine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

was the 1.4l engine only available in the highline range?

Is the 1.5 engine producing more power than the 1.4 or are VW limiting it to 150bhp?

When is the new 1.5l tsi? It isn't on that pricesheet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The 1.5 TSi will initially be 150bhp but they will bring in a 130bhp Bluemotion version at a later date also.

the 1.4 150bhp was in the highline only.

the new 1.5 tsi will have two power outputs 130 and 150

the big news is the lower co2 figures in the 1.5 so will but it pack down in the €200 pa road tax rate where as in the new model the 1.4 engine is in a higher co2 rate and thus tax is gone up from €200 to €270 compared to the outgoing model

from reading reviews May - not in the uk either but on the Volkswagen france configurator

The 1.5 TSi should be a better buy than a 1.6 TDi in that regard, more and more people are returning to petrol and it's only right.

Do we know yet if the 1.5 tsi will be available on the Comfortline model?

The 1.5 TSi is not being released at launch and who knows further down the road. If there are enough inquires then they may bring it in lower spec along with the detuned 130bhp Bluemotion version.

I had mine serviced there and the customer service couldn't have been better.
I had no problems for them to look at though.

One thing I did like was the walk around before and after the service to point out any previous damage or marks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Think they're all instructed to do that now (the walk around glance!)

Don't mind the sound of a diesel at all myself.

Funny things is when I see a GTD I think, this journey would be costing me about half the price in fuel if I was driving that and getting 90% of the benefit (same looks, slightly less power).
