"Slightly" off topic but how much I might get for a clean set of OEM Austins if I were to sell 'em?

    I love the new 18s''.
They look like an evolution of the Austins. My biggest issue with them is kerb rash. One little rub and they look completely wrecked. I unfortunately have to park a inch from the kerb where I live so its on all four corners.

Parking an inch from the kerb shouldn't damage them :)

I have the car 17 months now and as of yet *touches wood* mine are unmarked, aside from a couple of tiny stone chip looking marks. The edges are all smooth and shiny and that's how I plan on them staying!

Be careful when you get the tyres changed... a careless tyre fitter will wreck them handily enough.

The plan will be hopefully to never have the tyre's changed on the Austin's. ;)

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but how do you ensure a tyre depot doesn't damage your rims when having tyres fitted? If you find an alloy gouged after a tyre is fitted, how do you convince the fitter they caused the damage?

Or do you tactfully mention beforehand that your wheels are pristine and please be careful? I've often worried about this being a bit ocd about keeping my rims unblemished.

Point out beforehand that your wheels are unmarked, check again once tyres are fitted and if there is damage the fitter is to blame, simples.

Having your wheels clean is also important there. Don't go to get a fresh set of tyre's fitted with a two week build up of brake/road dust on them. Have them sparkly clean or as close to sparkly clean as you can when you turn up, it makes it more obvious that you're very well aware of how they looked before they went in. This along with mentioning that to them (in a nice way of course) will help reduce any potential for disaster.

As a mater of interest has anyone here either remapped their Golf R or used a tuning box?

Have a JB1 in the gti.
The R performance would be insane.

Use common sense too with regard to where you get them fitted. Your typical Kwik fit / Advance pitStop are just not going to care enough and/or have adequate tools/training to do the job properly. Bring the car to a smaller indie tyre shop, even better if you see them handling decent cars regularly.

€289 a corner? No chance you're getting genuine VW wheels for that. The 19" Prets are around €1100 a corner! The Austins are definitely 6-700+.

Generally speaking I've found VW irl good for optioning factory equipment that isn't officially available. You'll need to do the leg work and find the correct option codes. Give the option code to the dealer and ask him to check if it's feasible...

I can't link to the VW document dated Nov 2016 that shows a price for the 18" Pretorias as I haven't got enough posts. I thought I read something somewhere about there being a difference between the 18 & 19" Pretorias other than the obvious size differences.

Cheers, I will search for the appropriate option code and ask/insist on it.

How did the insurance company find the JB1?

A big benefit is that its plug and play so I can sell it on when I get rid of the car. Likewise for any warranty or insurance issues if you care so much about that.
Noticeable jump in power and it puts it on the limit for fwd when accelerating from low speeds.

    I've a Racechip on my R, it's brilliant.

I hate that Irish insurers force people into that carry on, it's properly frustrating but I don't really blame anyone for keeping quiet.

Do you have a GtiP or just a Gti? Would be interested if you felt it was on the limit with the LSD doing its thing or if it's something more noticeable without.

I'm a bit different than you guys here. Euro spec car in euro city so the driving is very different. I didn't bother with the PP as the special LSD would never actually kick in as I heard its only when you really throw it into a tight country road sort of bend.  Still slightly regret not getting it if only for the resale.
Only when I take the odd trip to UK or Ireland can I drive it properly, otherwise its 220kph cruises on the autobahn.
Theres a new JB4 out which is worth looking at.  US made so a bit of hassle getting it over and maybe better to get the DTUK tuning box.

You'd be surprised, the LSD kicks in a lot on hard acceleration and in low gears when the boost kicks in fully, one of the reasons the car is so lacking in torquesteer when pushed in a straight line. The winter really shows it well because the roads spend a lot of time greasy and the stock Potenza's are to put it mildly... crap. Haha.

I'll personally most likely wait for the warranty to expire and then I'll Revo it. Stage one and 300bhp will do nicely :D

Revo just released their V4 software, some impressive figures on both the gti and R.

Stage one R 0-60 is 3.8 seconds

Yeah, properly impressive gains even from just the remap on a stock base GTI. I'd say a stage 3/4 R would be an absolute animal!

Just to be clear Maddness - this is on a Golf R Mk VII?

    Where/which box did you purchase?

Yeah it's a dsg model. I bought the Racechip 1 which is the basic one. I was a little sceptical about it so went for the cheapest option but am very impressed so far.

Well - I finally changed over from the GTD

to the GTI. Picked her up on Friday, so far so good...

Bit of trouble with the insurance Co. Rang them on Tuesday to advise of the change over and was quoted 35e. Their system said it was an estate but I told them it wasn't. When I rang Sat to confirm they said they would have to refer the matter to their underwriters! I told them to go listen to the call and if it was anything more than 35e it was a matter for them and not me.

    Nice one, well wear!

Both my R and the GTI before it were also down as an "estate" in the log book. No idea why and I never chased it up. Seems to be a common thing. Insurance co never queried it.

congrats - you've scratched the itch at last. well wear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

That's a feck up with the motor tax/registration office regarding listing it as an estate rather than a hatchback, very common on Golfs. Insurance companies just look up the car's reg on their database which is linked to the motor registration database and then you have to deal with the "computer says no" drone at the other end of the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭Muppet Man

Ya, my R is an "estate" too. Its not THAT long... jeez.

Very nice, that's one of the best colours for the MK7 imo.

How do they compare now that you've had both GTi & GTD?
