    It's typical tbh
When Nintendo have announced something new people who have rarely if ever posted on the Nintendo thread pop up to grant us an audience with their words of wisdom, that Nintendo are doomed, that Nintendo should go 3rd party, that Nintendo are for kids, that they are crap at pricing, crap at marketing, crap at stocking.
The main reason we don't see this with PS or XB hardware is down to the rabid followers there who would tear them to pieces.
When someone takes the time to disagree with the naysayers, they are inevitably derided for defending a failed company or labelled a fanboy.
    It's most irritating.
These are the types of people who would slag Battleborn without playing it, scoff at The Last Guardian based on a Youtube video, and probably think their skills on CoD:Blops3, on a console, makes them some sort of expert on all games everywhere.

Oh that thread over in the Nintendo forum is awful. So many people going on like they're investors on Dragon's Den.

    They are still at it.
Forgetting the launch prices and limited library of launch consoles everywhere.
They also seem to be taking umbrage at the lack of as you play charging of the controllers without an extra purchase, forgetting the 360.
They complain of the expensive controllers, forgetting the high XB1 and PS4 controllers.
They complain of the lack of a pack-in, free game, forgetting that neither the XB1 or PS4 came with a free game.
Just short memories amongst posters, short memories everywhere....

ooh stop I was chuffed with the reveal bar lack of games and price.
But then went on the Switch Thread and it brought my from hyped state, to what have Nintendo done!!
The moaners completely dragged me down. Thank God for the likes of you, you know exactly how to school all the trolls...

More I think of it, launches have always been bare... Hello PS or Xbox launches.
Switch is mirroring the N64 launch with Mario 64 vs Zelda TBOW as only game, but what a game.

Accessories sound really expensive, but again its the same for the other consoles.
And more I hear about the ugly looking Switch Grip its actually very comfortable so maybe Pro Controller isnt needed even though ill get one.
Come December we will have best Zelda, a proper 3D mario the first since Galaxy and Best Mario kart & Splatoon2 its not a bad lineup in first year.

I do think they should modelled their online as 60e and full access to back catalogue, its a win win.
It could be a major selling point and source of revenue and we could add or delete titles at whim depending on storage space you have.

    Bring on march 3rd.

On a brighter note, the load times were really quick, no install needed!

While the outrage has of course been exaggerated by the Internet's perpetually furious denizens, I think certain criticisms of the Switch are warranted. The launch line-up is super limited beyond Zelda. It is quite a costly piece of kit by current market standards, although I also don't think they can magically reduce the price either given its clearly complex form factor and the ol' economies of scale. There's a few odd design choices, and the apparent 'one month only' subscription games is an insanely misjudged idea if true. From what I've read and seen the 1 2 Switch is flimsy and disposable enough that it seems like it should have been a shoo-in for a bundled game - I say that as it seems quite a step down from the more substantial Nintendoland.

I've already put down a deposit of course :pac: Seems like a quantum leap over the 3DS and very excited about taking genuine full-scale console quality games on the go. But there are a few eyebrow raising decisions too, and Nintendo aren't quite filling me with confidence yet that it'll achieve the crossover appeal it needs to.

Is it when you look at that pic and the first thought is,
"that's not the first PS1/PSX or Xbox controller!"

    (NERD ALERT!)
It's a Xbox S controller right in that pic? That's the second gen Xbox controller. I think was released on Japan before US/EU. We had the massive weapon like pad initially.
Also the PS1/PSX controller, that's the 3rd gen controller I think. First was the original with no analog sticks, then 'dual analog' pad and after that the first DualShock. I think the DualShocl was released in the EU at the same time as GranTursimo came out
    (/NERD ALERT)

Gran turismo? Are Escape was the dual shock killer app. Love that game!

Been playing Banjo Kazooie on N64 recently, wondering if anyone has modded the rom in any way since it's full of problems that have not aged well. The camera being the main culprit. Or was sequel easier to get on with. There's a decent game in there, but it's locked behind frustration.

    Are Escape?
    Surely you mean... Ahhrrr Escape!

But seriously, Ape Escape was indeed the "launch title" with the Dualshock but Gran Turismo was the first game that really made the device sing, so to speak.

Long time reader, first time poster. I thought Metal Gear Solid on PS1 was the first to use the duelshock. It was amazing at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭DinoRex

I know my copy of Ape Escape came bundled with the controller as it would be completely unplayable without it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,766 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

There was the Dual Analog controller first, and one with the Sony Dual Analog Stick function built in.
    The Dual shock came later.

I remember having Need for Speed 3 on the PS, and the only analogue contoller it worked with was the NegCon and compatible controllers.
Immediately afterward Gran Turismo came out with Sony Analog and dual shock support, stealing NfS' thunder somewhat, though the game remains pretty good tbh.

There was also a dual analog controller with rumble and built in motion sensing for one of the Warhawk games.

Made Sony's claims that the rumble would interfere with the motion sensing on the PS3 Dualshock sound even more stupid than it already did. Nothing to do with the patent infringement lawsuit with Immersion I'm sure.

I've never actually played Ape Escape, is it worth trying now? They played the 2ND one at GDQ but didn't watch it.

It's a laugh to be sure.
There were some priceless titles back then, including Overboard, just fun stuff, alongside the po faced stuff like GPolice.

Didn't Ridge Racer have a controller that twisted in the middle for steering, only ever saw pics of it, think it may have worked with wipeout as well.

That's the NegCon, an absolute legend of a controller.
It worked with the Ridge Racer games right up to and including Ridge Racer V on the PS2!
Lots of early steering controllers used it as their basis too.
The analogue feel to it, as well as it's analogue buttons and analogue trigger was fantastic.
I used it too, to play Wipeout, allowing you to ease the ship around corners and adjust the attitude for jumps and landings.

The JogCon was it's successor, and was a piece of sh1te.

I would say it worked well with wipeout, as much as I enjoyed the game, the D pad wasnt great for it.

One of my few claims to fame is completing the entire single player campaign of the original Wipeout on PS during a Gamesworld party, where they had it running with only the original digital controller available.
I had many drinks but my time spent on it, even with the NegCon, gave me the skills I needed to impress.
Impress myself only, as no one else even noticed.... very disappointing :(

Ah your 15 minutes of fame. It was a difficult game to master, got more into 2097 when that came out. Is that Gamesworld on Liffey St.? God, thats going back afew years.

On the topic of retro peripherals, does anyone remember the ads that used be on the back pages of ps1 magazines back in the day? there was one in particular that always stood out to me, it was a vibrating vest and the boxart had the bloke from comix zone on the front of it. Does anyone remember that? Or maybe have more information on said vest?

It was, but I was around when there was also a shop in the back of Chapters, on Abbey St.
Just the two stores, around the time of the PS launch.
I worked there on my day off from my day job, I was there from around 95 to 00 and a few Christmases after that, great times.

Yeh, I remember chapters, is it still there? First went to Gamesworld myself when I got Resident Evil for the PS1 the day it came out. Great stores when there wasn't many like them about back then.

Chapters first moved across the street and then it moved to it's present location on Parnell St.
Gamesworld opened up some more shops before it was bought by Gamestop and, little by little, every sense of identity was leeched from it and replaced by a corporate nightmare... #stillbitter

Yeh, im not a fan of Gamestop, I do buy at Player1 in Maynooth when I can. I do miss Virgin Megastore, bought plenty of C64 and Amiga games there.

I can recall browsing the Spectrum stuff... Good times.
Also, buying cassettes and, eventually, CDs.
I suppose Tower on Wicklow St is as close as you can get to that now
